GSU's defense really isn't that bad. Just to put it into perspective, that was the most points we have given up all year. That includes Alabama who is not a joke on offense at all. That includes the Furman team that put 32 points on Florida (compare that to what Montana did at Tennessee). That includes the Wofford team that had 400+ yards on UNI but couldn't score because they shot themselves in the foot today. We were giving up less than 20 points per game before the Alabama game.

Either ODU just played the game of their lives or GSU's D had an off day, or both. Personally, I thought the play of our offense was actually more sloppy than that of the defense - penalties, fumbles, bad snaps.

Once you get past the manwhorebear there's not a lot back there to stop you this year it appears.
They did a good job of blocking Russell, he wasn't much of a factor today. We got pressure on Heinicke, but he always escaped the pocket and his accuracy didn't seem to diminish one bit when he was running for his life.

GSU's defense played as well as they could. Our offense has been making defenses look bad since Taylor took over at QB.

Oh and 93henfan, I guess the highlight of your season was beating ODU without our stud QB. Wow. You need to set your goals a little higher.

He has some sort of sick obsession with ODU, I'm really concerned about him. Seems like every ODU thread he makes an appearance. :coffee: I guess its because nobody has anything to talk about when it comes to Delaware football this year.

Also look at ODU's schedule....tell me how many times ODU has scored their average this year of 35 points. I think its all but twice this year in 13 games. It's not Georgia Southern's defense being bad, it was just ODU's offense being THAT good and unfortunately today, GSU's offense was just a tad better.

Also 93, its alright, you can come over to the dark side.

ODU can play offense, sure, but there were just way, way too many plays where ODU ran pretty much a simple, straightforward play, and GSU look compeletly befuddled handling it. And many of them were plays that didn't even involve the QB scrambling to keep a play alive. You have to think that Maine, who unlike ODU can play defense, has to be considered at least even money in the game this week.

I'm well aware of that. If GSU's defense is as bad as it looked today, well, then next week will be very interesting.

Yeah, I was just simply stating and agreeing with you....if Maine can have about the same success ODU did but play just a tad of defense, I think Maine wins next week.

Maine doesn't play streetball, so I very seriously doubt that will happen. You do realize that GSU forced five 3 & outs against ODU, correct? Converting (a couple with some assistance) those three fake punts is the only thing that kept them in the game.

When will you people learn that transitive property doesn't exist in college football. Yes, GSU lost to Appy, but Appy lost to Furman and Wofford by two scores. GSU beat Furman by 4 TD's plus and Wofford by 3.

Our defense was not prepared yesterday. All we needed was 2 stops. We had GSU 3rd and long several times but played out of position every time. Your wide receivers had a field day knocking down our backs. I had to shake my head every time I saw one go down. I chalk that up to lack of defensive leadership. We need changes at that level.

Those interference penalties that helped ODU were legit. Just like everything that goes on that field. You cannot make an excuse out of it. It's part of the game.

Maine is going to watch this game video for sure.

After reading the ga southern in game thread on their board, I can honestly say I've never seen a bigger group of whiny ass fans in my entire life.

They b.tched about every single call today despite pretty much every single PI that was called was legit. Being a homer is fine, whining and bitching because your team was allowed to get away with penalties is ridiculous.

And to act like odu was lucky to stay with them? Please.

We were either 1 of 2 nine and a half yard onside kicks, a fumbled run in front of the end zone that THEY recovered for a TD or another fumble they recovered away from possibly winning that game.

Gsu's offense was great today......but odu had some really bad breaks today as well and could have had a different result today had a few more breaks gone our way.

With that said, congrats to gsu.....that triple option isn't a whole heck of a lot of fun to play against. I honestly think that was more like a national semifinal game.....odu got screwed having to play gsu in the round of 16 and gsu probably got far more than they wanted in that round. Two great teams today who left it all on the line.

Gsu vs. Maine should be very interesting to watch next week. Will gsu's defense be better against a team that doesn't have Taylor heineke or did odu just exploit a really bad d? Well get the answer next week.

Honestly, I didn't see a clueless GSU defense, I saw a very versatile ODU offense execute and a QB that was making very accurate throws.

And as for Maine's offense against GSU's defense, you tell me...is Warren Smith as elusive and accurate as Heinicke? Can their backs make the kind of plays running on the perimeter that that the ODU backs did?

The PI on the fake punt was not legit. Watch the replay on ESPN3, it comes right after GSU's touchdown at the beginning of the second half. You can clearly see the ball was underthrown and not catchable and whether or not the defender interfered with the receiver was certainly questionable.

"We tried it all," said Georgia Southern coach Jeff Monken. "We blitzed, we didn't blitz. We didn't know what to do. The kid playing quarterback for them did a great job. They made plays."
As Heinicke and Wilder left the interview room, Wilder put his arm around Heinicke and whispered, "You'll be even better next year."

Congratulations to the Georgia Southern Eagles and their fans on their victory. That was quite an entertaining show both teams put on yesterday. Maybe not quite as entertaining as I might have liked it to be but the sun came up this morning and life goes on. Hopefully we can do it again in Norfolk in next seasons playoffs. Best of luck the rest of the way this year, but with that ground game, you may not need it.

Congrats to GSU. This game proved to be many of the things we smacked about this week. The aerial assault that we boasted about was for real. The TO that GSU boasted about was for real.

Gotta give credit to GSU's offense. It did not leave any room for error for our offense to "more than compensate".
Couple of things that did not pan out.
1. GSU kick returner. We avoided him early but we were able to contain him once we started to kick deep.
2. GSU kicker missing 2 PAT's.
3. Russell (Mangoatferret). It is obvious that he is a player. I watched for him to shine but he didn't. I figured that we would have to double team him for this to happen, but when I did watch the line play (admittedly not that often), I didn't see double teams. Curious what others think on their observations of this as mine was limited.

With Maine beating Appy, ODU lost an opportunity to host a quarterfinal game. The game would have pitted the teacher (Cosgrove) versus the pupil (Wilder) as a subtitle.

Regarding Wilder's rant, meh, I want a coach that fights for his team. Beats having a figurehead like Curry standing on the sideline having someone wipe drool from his chin.

It's clear that ODU will have to improve at MLB and Safety positions. We have not gotten good play from those positions all year and I don't know if it is because of the players or the coaching.

Congrats to GSU again. I really enjoy watching that style of offense run. Love the uniforms also. Somewhat disappointed in your crowd though. But maybe that was because of the unknown (in FCS world) team you were playing. I would expect a bigger crowd when the two play again after this highly entertaining game.

The ball was underthrown, the ODU WR had stopped to try to come back to it, the GSU defender impeded that without ever turning around to look for the ball. It's a good call.

If a receiver has to come back and catch an underthrown ball and run into the defender, that's not the defender's fault. If that were the case then receivers could always pretend like the defender is in the way of their route and run into him. And even if that guy wasn't covered, there was no way he was going to be able to get that ball.

Yes it is a penalty if the defender is not looking at the ball. The defender certainly has a right to the ball and can get between the receiver and the ball, but if contact is made, the guy not looking at the ball gets the penalty.
I would need to look at the play again to see if he would have had a chance to catch it. You could be right.

Russell had decent stats given the amount of passing ODU did. He had seven tackles, 1 sack and 1.5 taclkles for loss. On teh ODU side, Cameron only had three tackles.

How can I shut your mom's mouth for her? She's all that way back in Georgia!

Also, it still amazes me that ref's let GSU get away with illegal motion on nearly half their plays. You can run parallel when a play is starting. You CANNOT be moving towards the line of scrimmage, which GSU men in motion were allowed to do time and time again.

Unreal. But hey, if they don't call it, it isn't a penalty. Congrats on your win, but tell your whiny fans to shut up and enjoy their victory.

Russell had decent stats given the amount of passing ODU did. He had seven tackles, 1 sack and 1.5 taclkles for loss. On teh ODU side, Cameron only had three tackles.
Yep. Cameron was definitely outplayed by Russell. What hurt ODU, in particular Cameron, more than anything (even more than 4 of our top 5 CB's being out) was when our second best defensive lineman was lost for the game after 3 freaking plays. He was also a handful and when he went out, it allowed you guys to double Cameron all freaking day with literally almost no repercussions.

But considering how you guys ran us over anyways, it probably wouldn't have mattered a whole lot. But it definitely would have been nice to have had him in there for the whole game instead of 3 plays. Oh well.

The officials were the only reason ODU was even in the game. Those guys were clowns. ODU had absolutely no answer for our speed on offense. Our defense was really bad today. ODU has a good QB, but there were some serious breakdowns. Our D coordinator isn't a true guinea.
