North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
I've watched the Montana/Sam Houston State game a couple times. It was easy to see the flaws in Montanas game plan. On the option they tried to defend it with an inside linebacker, which is almost impossible as they quickly found out. Also Montana doesn't appear to have much of a passrush. They are very good straight up against the rush, but don't have a lot of pusuit speed especially with their linebackers. But they definitely wore Sam Houston down, they were really sucking air in the 2nd half. On the play that decided the game, Sam Houston went on fourth and short with three minutes to go. and bounced Tim Fanders to their left. The Montana defensive end instead of holding his position, crashed toward the center of the line, Flanders bounced outside of him and easily made a first down, end of game. I don't think they'll have as easy a time with North Dakota State. They are a notch above Montana both offensively and defensively. They've got a punishing running attack that will get to Sam Houston sooner or later and if they fill up the box, it'll be Ryan Smith and Big Tex one on one. Like taking candy from a baby. They'll win by at least three scores.

No pass rush for Montana? You guys had 2 sacks against UNI...how many did Montana have?

Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
It's interesting how some posters are both dismissive of the Griz based on one game and also not willing to give the Bearcats full credit for winning that game. Montana did not play anywhere near their best game against the Bearcats, some of that was coaching and some of it was the Bearkats. Anyone who wants to state that they're better than Montana (or someone else) based on that one game is being a little myopic.
Sam Houston knocked the snot out of MSU and beat a strong Montana team and doesn't get enough credit for it. I think NDSU will win this one but wouldn't be surprised if Sam Houston wins it. They're a very good team that can beat you in a number of different ways. The Bison will be in trouble if they get a little too sure of themselves after trouncing GSU and Lehigh. They better have their heads on straight and be ready to play.

Montana and GSU were both good teams. Montana out of the NDSU BISON mold and GSU out of the SHSU mold. This game pits the Good Montana against the Good GSU. The top pro set-team vs the top option team.
NDSU BISON vs. SHSU Bearkats.
Some teams that run the option just cant be stopped. I would direct you to The NDSU BISON during their generation of the option. It was unstoppable. The big question always was: Could the other team keep up?
Montana was keeping up until offensive mistakes killed them early: Turnovers resulting in points and scoring drive ending errors.
The NDSU offense is not likely to make those kinds of mistakes, will finish those drives with points and keep pace or stay ahead of the SHSU option, which will at some point, probably much sooner than later, grind to a halt.
The most physical team we played all year, Illinois State, had trouble stopping it, they did slow it down some though. I dont think SHGSU plays that type of ball and I expect the BISON to have a slightly above average offensive day.

The NDSU offense on the other hand is a very balanced and successful attack that features an extremely physical style of play, balanced equally between the run and the pass. This type of attack is hard to stop too. When properly executed it is the most effecient offensive scheme.NDSU has the greatest body of knowledge on the option ever assembled and dropped the scheme because it is fatally flawed.

What would you call it then potty-mouth?
I was simply contrasting the novel, trick nature of the option with the more fundamentally sound offenses run by Montana and "Good" Momtana, The NDSU BISON!

Anyway, our offense is most comparable to Oregon's, would you consider their offense to be pro-style?

The most physical team you faced was the one that held you to 60 yards net rushing at an average 1.8 ypc.

This game should be a good one. Sounds like a lot of Bison fans will be making the trip down to Frisco.
IMO, the Bison defense will be the difference in the game. Stop SHSU consistently and keep our offense on the field. Our running game between the tackles should wear down SHSU in the 2nd half.

What is interesting here is that SHSU's ability to get rich quick means NDSU could win the time of possession by a wide margin and the score could still be close on big plays. Such a scenario would imo produce a low-scoring defensive struggle favoring NDSU. Bison need to find the TE down the middle off play action early.

Ya, I was worried about GS coming in and running all over us, but the defense stepped-up and shut them down.
I'm looking forward to being at the game.

I hope and pray that the bearkats win this game,or there will be no living with the certain ndsu posters ( and we all know who I mean ). But i'm afraid that ndsu and their defense will be the difference in this game. Ndsu 28-17

Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
one thing Sam Houston State did against Montana is stop the run except for a few plays. Montana had been running the ball for lots of yards in its previous games but only got 103 against Sam Houston State with 54 of those being on one TD run by the quarterback. Obviously probably going to have to run the ball better than that. It'll be interesting to see if they can. They're a different style than Montana. More physical I think. But Montana did have a good running game. Their offensive line was really dominant on running plays against Central Arksnas and Northern Iowa. One of the intriguing unknowns about this game is whether or not North Dakota State's offenisve line will be able to do a better job in the run game than Montana did. Also whether or not their more "smash mouth" style will work.

Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
It should be interesting. NDSU is more of the up the middle power run, and UNI did a much better defending this than the speedy outside running of Montana. SHSU defended the Montana outside speed with speed, and NDSU was able to handle GSU's speed. The game may come down to turnovers or penalties. Should be a great game anyway.JohnStOnge wrote:one thing Sam Houston State did against Montana is stop the run except for a few plays. If SHSU "stacks" the box then our short-passing game becomes very important. I'm sure SHSU will try and stop our run and make us 1-dimensional. Utilizing our TEs might help in this game for the Bison.
Definitley an interesting match-up for sure.
