Re: When did you become a fan of your favorite team?
As a freshmen in high school, I jumped on the NDSU Bison bandwagon as they made their way to the championship game against SW Texas State in 1981. Although the Bison lost that year, I watched them play in six championship games over the next nine years winning five championships along the way. Now that the Bison are in the FCS championship, it is nice to see that the winning football tradition has transitioned to the next level from DII. GO BISON!!!!

I would have to say I became a die hard Bison fan in 1986 at the ripe old age of 7. My uncles were all Teammakers and took me to a lot of games so you could say I was born into a Bison family. I was fortunate to see most of the dynasty teams in the eighties when the Bison were absolutely on a different level than any other team in D-II.

Became a fan of Stony Brook in 2007 when I entered the University. As I started reading about the athletics and witnessing the growth of the programs I became an instant fan of everything Seawolves.

Idaho, even people who went to that school aren't fans.AZGrizFan wrote:Attended my first UM game at Dornblazer when I was about 12. Been a fan ever since (so, 26+ years now).

Yeahhhh.... I didn't witness a loss to UND until I was thirteen. The Bison had a twelve game winning streak against the Sioux from 1981-1992. In that time NDSU appeared in seven national title games winning five.AZGrizFan wrote:Any other team except UND.westsidebison wrote:I would have to say I became a die hard Bison fan in 1986 at the ripe old age of 7. My freshman year at ASU. I grew up 100 miles from Boone, but had never even been there until my high school college day visit. My father is a UNC Chapel Hill grad and we grew up Tarheel fans. I followed ASU football while I was there but admittedly got a lot more involved in the early/mid 2000's

Re: When did you become a fan of your favorite team?
I have never denied that. UND turned their program around in the early 90's and other teams figured us out and we lost our recruiting advantage. I'm not one that doesn't give props where they are deserved. The Sioux became a premiere DII program after that winning it all in 2001. That doesn't at all take away the fact, that in the 80's the NDSU football program was one of the most dominant in the history of college football. What's your beef with the Bison? Since 2003 we are 1-0 against the Griz and we just happen to be playing in a pretty big game on Saturday.AZGrizFan wrote:And since then the Bison are 3-10 against them.westsidebison wrote: Yeahhhh.... Re: When did you become a fan of your favorite team?
My grandmother graduated from UNI (at the time it was still the Iowa State Teachers College) in 1943(ish), I then had an aunt attend UNI in the late 60's (actually still the Iowa State Teachers College, but then changed the name to UNI her last year there). I had a cousin attend UNI in the last 90's and early 00's. I qualified for a state competition every year between ages 8-13 that was hosted in the UNIDome, and my high school sent a couple players to UNI, and the state playoffs (semi's and title game) are in the UNIDome and we were regularly there...and they were often same weekend as UNI games.
Long of it short UNI has always been a team I followed, but I really didn't start following them closely until I started getting recruiting letters from them in 04. I enrolled at UNI as a JR after going to a private school to play football and deciding UNI is where I needed to be. I'd say UNI has been "my team" since 06 my first year out of HS when I wasn't getting letters from other schools, but always been a fan of the team. I've only missed 2 home games since the start of the 07 team.
Michigan has been my FBS team as long as I can remember. I grew up in NW Iowa, right on the SD/MN/IA boarder. There was no South Dakota school teams with any following in the area, there were no Minnesota fans...it was all Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska. I hated the way the fans of the schools acted - Nebraksa fans because they were good but didn't know anything about class...Iowa and Iowa State fans because they sucked shit and thought they were a top 3 program. I really started paying attention to college football in 95 at the age of 7. I don't know what drew me to Michigan, but I saw a couple games on TV in 95 and was hooked, starting with the 1 point win over Virginia in the Pigskin classic, and the W over Ohio State is what really really hooked me at that time. Then the 97 season came and I knew I would never cheer for anyone else.
As for the pro teams:
Vikings and Twins - grew up right on the MN boarder, and while there was no Gopher presence there is almost nothing but Twins and Vikings fans up there. I almost had no choice, nor would I want it any other way.
Clippers: The same can't be said as the Minnesota presence here. The T-Wolves weren't great and I grew up in the Bulls era. Everyone in my area were Bulls fans. I, however, hated the Bulls. I don't know why but I did. Looking back I have great appreciation for what they were, but I hated them in the time. I was a huge Sonics fan and Clipper fans. Clippers sucks so the Sonics were my other team. That started with NBA Jam on the Sega Genesis. Kemp, Payton, Schrempf, Perkins, etc.... awesome. I literally cried at the age of 10 when the Bulls beat the Sonics int he finals. Then he Sonics fell off and the Clips remained the Clips. Then the Sonics left Seattle. However, the Clippers had Brand, Darius Miles, Quenton Richardson, etc... and I was hooked....and I still wonder why. Hopefully they can turn it around now with a good cast there to start to build on with Paul, Griffin and Deandre Jordan.
I still have a soft spot for the Thunder/Sonics though.
The only other pro league I really pay attention too is the Ausie Rules Football and there I go with the Hawthorne Hawks. No real reason other than the first game I saw was them and another team and they won and I found myself cheering for them during the game without a connection to the team so I knew they were my team

Montanans are contractually obligated to belittle North Dakotans. I've lived in both Montana and North Dakota and I've heard it all from my Montana relatives.westsidebison wrote: What's your beef with the Bison?
If you hang out here long enough, westsidebison, you'll see why the posts of two NDSU fans in particular elicit hatred. I like Fargo. Enjoyed my time living there and like going back to visit my relatives. I root for NDSU 9 out of 10 times and hope the Bison win this Saturday. That being said....I can only imagine the poetic shiznit talking by JBB and Lakes if NDSU comes out on top. My guess is it gets ugly either win or lose.

Re: When did you become a fan of your favorite team?
2010. My freshman year, 1st home game of the season, whooped Morgan State soundly. I had already been to the UNI game because the band went with the team, but I'm still trying to forget Jose Mohler so I choose to ignore that game... but I digress. I knew I would bleed yellow and green the instant we started our pregame show, it was such a rush and I will never forget it how loud the Dome gets when we run on, and even louder when the team sprints out of the giant helmet amidst AC/DC, fireworks, and 18,000 drunk North Dakotans.
I'm still having trouble believing that we're all coming down for the championship only a year later. The Gold Star Marching Band leaves in an hour and I haven't slept a wink. It'll be a game to remember, hopefully our Bison bring the FCS title home!
ON BISON!!
