9/1 SLC Football Report

Post by blackfordpu »

A recap of all the SLC games from Saturday.

LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese State scored on two straight possessions in the first quarter, got a pair of touchdowns from senior tailback Kris Bush and the No. 10 ranked Cowboys went on to a 35-12 season opening victory over No. 13 Portland State here Saturday night.
Bush, who started the game behind both starter Toddrick Pendland and backup Jamie Leonard, scored on runs of three and 16 yards as McNeese produced three rushing tds and two through the air.

Quarterback Derrick Fourroux did the passing on both scores through the air, hitting Steven Whitehead from 15 yards out and Immanuel Friddle on a 51 yard shot.

The Cowboy defense did some bending but did not break, holding Portland State without a touchdown. All 12 points came on field goals by Chris Chalmers. Also the Cowboys held Portland State to minus10 yards rushing.

“I thought that we played a good game,” Cowboy head coach Matt Viator said. “We beat a good team who we didn’t really know anything about. We had some problems with our deep snapping on punts but we’ll correct that.

“I thought that our running backs ran the ball good. The offensive line did a good job and we got a good effort from our tailbacks.”

The Cowboys, who now have an open date, totaled 395 yards in the game to Portland State’s 266. Leonard led the team with 89 yards rushing on 11 carries while Fourroux had 64 and Bush 40.

Fourroux completed 11 of 23 passes for 191 yards and the two tds and Whitehead led all receivers with five catches for 83 yards. Linebacker Allen Nelson led the defensive players with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The Vikings had opened the scoring in the game getting a field goal from Chalmers with 10:24 left in the first quarter. Portland State had started its drive on the 45 following the recovery of a McNeese fumble. They drove the ball to the eight before they were forced to try the field goal as the Cowboys held for three downs.
