Re: National Coverage of the Fighting Sioux Primary
That's pretty harsh and it would be stupid of UND not to change the nickname now. It's too bad that it's gone on this long. I wish they could keep the name, but it's just not logical for them at this point. If they really wanna ruin their athletic programs, then go right ahead. The NCAA has long said the nickname and logo are hostile to American Indians and that the Grand Forks school's teams may not wear uniforms that have the nickname or logo during post-season contests. But the Franklin letter's mention of forfeiting games is a new development.

Re: National Coverage of the Fighting Sioux Primary
Should we start a pool on how long it will take that blogger dude to put up a post claiming Faison called the NCAA and asked them to send this letter? That post could already be up for all I know. [Edit: not yet, apparently. He didn't make that accusation in his 2/29 post].
The last sentence of the letter suggests that even fans wearing Sioux gear might not be allowed admittance to a post-season event, home or away. Policing that would be tough but I think that's what Franklin is trying to suggest.

Re: National Coverage of the Fighting Sioux Primary
NCAA can't regulate what fans wear. Unless it's something extremely vulgar, you have the right to wear whatever you want to a game. And for the NCAA to think otherwise is absolutely absurd.

Re: National Coverage of the Fighting Sioux Primary
This isn't new to those who want to retire the name, but its a reality check for those who want to keep the name at all costs. The team right now that would be affected first is the women's hockey team. They have their replacement jerseys and if they finish in the top 4 seed will be the home team....but at their opponents venue. But of course some pro-nickname people care only about MEN"S hockey. Well if they make the field of 16 they won't be called the Sioux and their jerseys will look like the women's jerseys with just University of North Dakota and the interlocking ND logo on it. This month the ND Supreme Court will make their ruling and I hope they look at this and vote that the state law that Al "Crazy" Carlson started is unconstitutional and we can finally put to rest this issue.

This whole nickname thing is causing my head to spin. You have the NCAA, you have federal law, you have state law, you have conferences, you have students, you have fans, you have alumni, you have NDSU alumni, you have some possible SIOUX tribe members themselves. How did the Seminoles keep their name? Was it because there is no Fighting Seminole in it? How about the Fighting Irish -- that seems borderline racist, if not highly provincial and stereotypical. Someone please make this simple for me....

There is apparently only one band of Seminoles that FSU had to get on board.alvin kayak wrote:This whole nickname thing is causing my head to spin. Depending on how you count, UND had to get at least two different bands of Sioux on board (Spirit Lake and Standing Rock), and at times I have heard anywhere up to maybe four additional bands. Spirit Lake loves the name. Standing Rock tribal government apparently does not, though there has been much speculation that the rank and file would approve the name if the tribal government would let them vote on it.
Quicker summary: FSU got the one approval it needed. UND needed two and only got one.

And I would not be surprised if that one group of Seminoles were benefitting in some way, shape, or form from the continued use of their name by FSU. My guess there is financial incentive.griz8791 wrote:There is apparently only one band of Seminoles that FSU had to get on board.alvin kayak wrote:This whole nickname thing is causing my head to spin. You aren't the only one. Just when you think the name issue is over and UND will just be UND...something new pops up to ruin the plan to retire the name. A year ago you had a lot of UND coaches, fans, and alumni on board to keep the name...now you have all the coaches, the head of the alumni, and famous alumni like Jim Kleinsasser coming out and saying for the good of UND althetics its time to retire the name. The ones against retiring the name are those who think the NCAA and Big Sky are bluffing, and some NDSU fans who want to destory UND athletics.alvin kayak wrote:This whole nickname thing is causing my head to spin. There is racism everywhere you idiot. There is racism at FSU, Utah, Central Michigan...everywhere. But because of your continued hatred towards UND you only use that as an example.lakesbison wrote:goon.. youre an idiot. you run along.

I love it that you are for teams getting rid of Indian nicknames Lakes and yet you are a FSU Seminole fan. How ironic that you support a school that has a white guy, dressed up like an Indian, get on a horse, and throws a flaming spear into the 50 yard line in front of thousands of tomahawk chopping Indian chanting fans. You are the definition of hypocrate.

FSU has 100% support? Really? On Monday, September 19 when students arrived at the University of Montana’s Payne Family Native American Center—a place built on the campus in Missoula, Montana to foster understanding of Natives by non-Native students—a sticker declaring “Save the White Race! Earth’s Most Endangered Species” was discovered.
The sticker was immediately removed from the recycling entrance, but the reverberations are still felt by the university’s Native students.

In a statement released earlier today, the Seminole Tribe of Florida announced that they no longer support Florida State University's use of their name for their athletic teams. This announcement reverses years of support, including a recent show of solidarity in the face of an NCAA ruling that the name was offensive. Based largely on the tribe's support, the NCAA backed down from their censure of FSU and removed the name Seminoles from their banned names list.
Apparently, the Tribe has talked for a year or two about backing away from the Florida State teams but felt forced to make a decision when the NCAA came around this summer. "We thought the team would be good this year," Runningturkey added.
Runningturkey suggested that Florida State consider other names like the Capitals, Oranges or Navajo. "The Tribe is putting together some packets to pitch to some other schools that we think might better suit our image, like Virginia Tech or maybe Alabama. What's a Crimson Tide anyway?"

NDSU students did the same thing showing a UND Indian giving oral sex to a Bison.Dartmouth College's president and athletics director issued pre-Thanksgiving apologies for a series of incidents that have angered American Indian students and professors.
A fraternity sold T-shirts, prior to the football game against the College of the Holy Cross, depicting a Holy Cross Crusader performing oral sex on an Indian.

NDSU isnt fighting tooth and nail over a nickname, and that was 2008 and against obama, OBAMA sucks! so big deal.

Darell, I'm more than happy to let you and lakes fight this one out but thought I'd point out one thing to you. Yes, it's true that NDSU fans/students have made some shirts that maybe weren't the best idea but how does the saying go, those who live in glass houses........back in the day I saw a few shirts made by UND students that had an Indian doing some pretty nasty things to a Bison. So while you bash NDSU, you might want to clean up your own house too. I too have seen those shirts, but to Lakes the only racism that happens to NA's is at UND. And all because of the nickname. Racism happens everywhere and to every race, but if he wants to single out UND because they are NDSU's rival fine, but to blame their nickname as the only racism that exists against NA's is not only wrong but completely stupid.
