Isn't the point of a poll so that all of us who decide to vote can decide on the criteria we choose?

That said, I had never thought of Portland as a college town. There are three NCAA schools in the Portland area--Portland State is the largest by far, but it is almost "campus-less" with a 49-acre campus. The University of Portland is a non-football Division I school and Lewis and Clark is a Division III school. There are some NAIA and junior college schools. A quick look down the Oregonian sports section had several stories on the Trailblazers and other pro-sports. When I finally got down to a college story, it was about the University of Oregon.

Van Pelt is an ESPN hack. His opinion on what makes a "college town" is worthless. If the place caters to a college atmosphere (and having many colleges there is enough to do it), that's a "college town." Being the "only show in town" is an impossibility because of the presence of pro, semipro, high school, and little league (or equivalent) teams.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Really? The U isn't the only thing in town (like it is in, say, Pullman), but it's definitely the biggest thing.

Why do you call Montana the "U"? That's only reserved for the University of Miami :tothehand:

Seriously? I called it "the U" because we were talking about the only university that happens to be in the aforementioned city of Missoula.

Not complicated…

Bozeman is a good college town but i certainly wouldnt call it great. It simply doesn't compare to Ithaca and Burlington back east. The thing that hurts Bozeman is the weak music scene.

I plan on getting up to Missoula for a football game this fall so ill wait to comment.

I was unaware the "music scene" was the make-or-break point for the best college town. Let's all disregard that Bozeman is a prototypical college town and the immense beauty of the place, but yeah, the music scene is weak, so

The music scene is a big part of a "college town". I dont think many people would argue that.

Bozeman is a great town otherwise i wouldn't have moved here but I still dont believe it's a great college town. In fact one of the reasons i moved here is the fact that the town doesnt completely revolve around the school.

Missoula by far has the best music scene in Montana, hands down :notworthy:

Sorry, but when a team shows lack of institutional control and has it's coach and AD axed, it is more than appropriate to tease a program that benefitted from the actions that were created by said lack of institutional control.

If it were any other program, the Griz would be all over them all the time. Kinda like calling Sac State, Pam State, that's okay isnt it? No one thinks you guys are funny for bringing that crap up but you guys do it ALL OF THE TIME!

By the way, why are you a fan of goosestepping? Please, enlighten the board Mr. bigcock with balls.

No, I understand, but let's just reserve the term the "U" to the University of Miami. That's what it's most known for. Let's just call in college football etiquette.

EWU is far and away the largest employer in Cheney.
EWU owns more land than practically the entire rest of the private land owners combined.
Music scene: There is Karaoke (sometimes) in at least one of the 4 bars...most weeks.
The top 10 single largest public gatherings in the history of Cheney are all home football games.
Cheney has a rodeo but it pales in comparison to EWU.
SE can get laid in Cheney.

That is all.

If you are looking for the best college "town" in the NW, that disqualifies Portland right there. Can't see how anyone would consider Portland a "town", especially when you can combine the population figures from the other 5 "towns" and you still would not exceed the population of Portland.

That said, comparing the places listed with what "college" kids may like...

Music...Portland
Nightlife...Portland
Beer/Booze...Portland
Rallys/Protests...Portland
Libraries/Research...Portland
Weather...Portland
Weekends...Portland

Keep in mind that Portland State is one of a dozen universities and/or colleges in Portland, with each one bringing their own brand of "college student" to the college melting pot.
