Kats back in similar situation
Once again, SHSU opens SLC action after playing Big 12 opponent

Last season about this time, the Bearkats were coming off a 56-3 loss to the University of Texas in the final tuneup before Southland Conference play began.
Then the scoreboard might have been lopsided in favor of the defending Division I-A national champs, but Sam Houston State had several good things come out of the loss. The Kats fought hard until the end, running back D.D. Terry rushed for more yards against the Longhorns than any other ballcarrier last season, and most importantly, everybody made it back to Huntsville healthy.
SHSU (2-2) is in the same boat again this year, coming off a loss against one of the better teams in the Big 12. And as was the case in Austin, the Kats didn’t have any reason to be down following a 39-3 loss to Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., last weekend.
It was a loss, but Sam Houston moved the ball well only to come up short in Cowboys’ territory several times, and again, the team is almost completely healthy heading into Saturday’s conference opener against Central Arkansas (1-3 overall, 0-1 in SLC) at Bowers Stadium.
“I think playing Oklahoma State really helps seasoning you with a tough conference schedule coming up,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “We have had two really good days of practice so I feel good about where our football team is at. We have to finish it up well (today)."

Definitely toughen them up, but it wouldn't be bad to have a bye or a cupcake sandwiched in between the FBS game and the start of conference play either.

It depends how each team operates. The Kats seem to do ok in these situations.uncfootballrules wrote:Definitely toughen them up, but it wouldn't be bad to have a bye or a cupcake sandwiched in between the FBS game and the start of conference play either.
