ODU coach is a dope. D hasn't slowed the GSU running game and he's gonna potentially give em the ball at the 40, dopey

TD GSU. They scored too fast IMO. ODU will have 2.5 mins left. 42-35 GSU lead.

INT GSU. Game over.

Unless ODU has the balls to go for two, the worst that can happen to GSU is OT. Better to just make sure you get 7, regardless of how much clock you burn.

GSU tacks on another TD in the waning seconds for good measure to take a 49-35 lead.

I thought it was over when ODU went up two scores. Great, great effort by GSU in the fourth quarter.

ODU, you have a great program. You'll be a force in C-USA quickly. :thumb:

Went on a fishing trip. Had the game set to record (hadn't found out who won yet). Idiots at ESPN only slotted 3 hrs for the game :? . Since when does a televised college football game on ESPN or one of the big networks get done in 3 hrs? Heck, even CSN and NBC-Sports allotted 3.5 hrs for the televised CAA games. So my recording shuts when GSU in about to score to tie it up at 35 all with 6:02 left in the game- wait, 602 was how many yds ODU gave up on the ground.

All things being equal, I'd rather be the team that traditionally runs the ball well than throws the ball well. I'm sure we've all heard the old saying about passing: "When you pass it, three things can happen, and two of those are bad." Granted, Heinicke generally makes good things happen, but if an offense is going to be unbalanced, I'd rather be the team that runs the ball well .

It's probably going to come down to one or two stops and I really think that's going to favor GSU because of the run game. There's less of a chance they're going to be playing behind the chains on 2nd and 3rd down whereas I think ODU will see more 2nd and 3rd and longs. Not saying they can't convert those, but it's more difficult to do so (see above re: passing). Also, really all I've seen of either team is our game against ODU and a large part of the limited success we had came from misdirection plays, which is what the TO is based on, so ODU will need to get better there - and probably has.

So, from a pure probability standpoint, I like GSU to make a stop or two more and win. But my gut still says ODU and I don't know why - maybe I'm fond of mascots dressed up like royalty...so, I'm officially hedging my bet.
Look, I'm not one to say I told you so, but I was right... :)

Two key plays at the end were passes and the two bad things that could happen did. But don't just look at that, ODU converted less than a third of their third downs, GSU converted half (and according to the radio announcers, GSU only had one three and out). That resulted in GSU running 79 plays to ODU's 67. At the end the ODU defense was gassed and I think Wilder knew it. It probably wouldn't have mattered if he punted it.

Note to self: always go with head over gut, despite the discrepancy in size over the two.

Congrats to the Monarchs on a great year. Hopefully we'll see you all down the road.

Those were definitely two big plays. But they didn't decide the game because there were 4 fumble results that were just as big.
1. GSU fumbled in the endzone that we wiffed on. GSU recovered for a TD.
2. Heinicke fumbled in the red zone after a big drive. GSU was gassed at that point.
3 & 4. GSU fumbled on two kickoff returns that popped in the air and hit the same ODU defender in the hands. Both times he could not hold on.

If any of those fumbles are recovered by ODU, things could have finished differently.

But there is no way to expect to win if you can't stop them. We had 4 stops in a row in the first half (2 by missed FG's where in a game of TD's, that equaled 1 good stop), but could not stop them in the 4th quarter when it counted.

Congrats to Georgia Southern.
After the interception and as GSU was driving to the last score, I walked over to the GSU section and walked up one aisle and down the other to congratulate the fans and wish them luck going forward and a safe trip back. Every one of them were appreciative of my gesture and complimentary of our program. I even invited several fans walking by my tailgate afterwards to some food and beer.

So on a perfect day in Norfolk, our FCS experience ends with much sadness. While I think we will find excitement at the next level, it is "expected" excitement which is much different then the excitement that took us by surprise over the last 4 seasons. I wish we had a couple of more years at this level to improve our defense while Heinicke was still around, so we can get another shot(s) at these playoffs. It's fun to build out-of-conference rivals to go along with our CAA rivals.

Hey, the one positive of ODU moving on is that they are now in the same conference as Marshall, so we're all ODU fans now.

Marshall is just one big collection of TWATS, Flaggy. It's a real exotic road trip. Enjoy that one.

What's the ODU carnage from this game? I saw Keita Malloy was let go yesterday, how many other defensive coaches were fired?

They ought to fire their d coordinator. They looked totally unprepared against GSU's triple option. Granted GSU came in avg 391 on the gorund, but giving up 602 yds rushing on national TV is an embarrassment.

I saw some rumblings online yesterday that he is gone too. Nothing officially out of Norfolk yet though.
