Also Youngstown State in 1997. Of course it was the Gateway back then. But one thing that always makes me shake my head is the fact that McNeese beat the 2nd place team from the Gateway (Northern Iowa) during the regular season, beat the Gateway champion (Western Illinois) in the playoff quarterfinals, then lost by 1 point to the third place team from the Gateway (Youngstown State) in the 1997 national championship game.

Of course it wasn't real fun to see McNeese beat Western Kentucky 38-13 during the regular season in 2002 then lose to the Hilltoppers 34-14 in the national championship game either. It's always a bitter pill to see your team lose in the national championship game to a team you think they could...and should...have beaten. And I'll go to my grave thinking that happened to McNeese both times they got there.

Its not fun to lose the NC game two years in a row either.

At least you weren't favored in both games. :ohno:

True. But at least Sam Houston State lost to a team that won its conference and is from a program that has a winning record against FBS schools in general and BCS league opponents in particular. I mean think about what McNeese did. First they lost to the third place team from the Gateway after having already beaten the first and second place teams. And of course there there was the dropped TD pass and the giving Youngstown State another shot for the go ahead points in the fourth quarter after having them stopped.

Then there was Western Kentucky. A team they beat 38-13 during the regular season. And Western Kentucky only got 13 first downs in the championship game. Meanwhile McNeese had 26 first downs and 405 yards of offense but scored only 13 points.

I just don't think Sam Houston State underachieved to the extent McNeese did in its two championship games. Frankly, my opinion is that North Dakota State just had the better team both times Sam Houston State played the Bison while I feel McNeese State had better teams than Youngstown State and Western Kentucky did in the 1997 and 2002 national championship games.

NDSU has to be strong favorite to win it all again.

So they probably won't. :twocents:

I think that EWU lost too much talent at the WR spot to challenge a team like NDSU. Although they are the type of team that could do it. Very explosive on offense. The tough thing with NDSU is that their not very explosive on offense or defense, but they feature the best combination of OL and DL in the nation and they are very very disciplined...

They have a great program and a lot of support...Griz could give them a game in the trenches but I don't think they have the qb to take them all the way and win the championship game.

I think maybe EWU lost too much talent at the WR spot to even make the playoffs. Aside from their suicidal schedule, the Eagles have to find a running game or they won't be challenging anyone for anything.

I asked this question before myself is there any school that could stop a potential three peat from 1-AA's answer to Alabama.I think not!!!

lol, I'm late to it but this is funny stuff....somewhere Lakesbison blew up upon reading it

I should add I think we drop 2 Ames this year...Kansas St and at Southern Ill. but our team is built for playoffs and think we can make it to the semis or NC game. the team that beats us in the playoffs will do it because they wear our D down. and that's something nobody has done in 5 years or we have a Indiana st type turnover game

A LOT of things have to align to get one. Planets have to align to get two in a row. 3 in a row has happened only once before...it takes avoiding injuries, fluke plays, poor coaching decisions, etc., etc. I would think just odds alone would say they do NOT threepeat.
