I think McNeese State at Northern Iowa is an interesting game. McNeese State was two one point losses from tying for the Southland title in spite of having its team severely depleted by injury last year; with Central Arkansas needing to recover an onside kick then kick a 47 yard field goal with less than a minute left to eek out a 27-26 win. Northern Iowa was 5-6 but was competitive in every game including during a 26-21 loss at Wisconsin and a 27-16 loss at Iowa. In spite of the recent success by Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas, McNeese State has still been the top program in the Southland over time. Northern Iowa's program has been over time, as good as it gets in the MVC. Both teams should be looking for getting back to normalcy for their programs by participating in the playoff tournament.

Both, I think, need the game for at large bid contingency. Norhern Iowa plays in the tough MVC and also has Iowa State on the schedule. McNeese starts the season with South Florida and after it goes to Northern Iowa its next two games are at Central Arkansas then home against Sam Houston State. I think the playoff prospects will look much better for the McNeese/Northern Iowa winner than they will for the loser. And I think the players and coaches associated with each team are aware of the other team's program history. Should be spicy.

And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
