Most Montanans have regional pro teams that we follow. Doesn't seem to stop us from showing up for 6 or 7 games per year.

Having a strong connection to the local community helps also, if locals don't feel close to the school they probably won't show up for games

Does our number include the home playoff game? That may have skewed the results a tad. All-in-all, to challenge BCS schools (in name only) is a good thing.
I don't know if the ncaa counts playoffs in their numbers. If a 16K showing is included then it will skew us downwards.

HHmmm. Because they are in the middle of nowhere and are the only show in town?
For JMU I would think that Virginia Tech and Virginia might be a slight draw. :coffee:

PSU is located in a large metropolitan area and has the largest enrollment of all the Oregon universities at 29,500 students. They are the real head scratchers. One would think they could out draw most of the FCS.

What killed PSU was transitioning to I-AA. In D2 they had a unique niche market with a winning tradition and strong following. I think they averaged around 20K attendance in the D2 days. When they moved to the FCS they moved into obscurity. They lost the traditional rivalries and were no longer competitive so people stopped caring even though Oregon and OSU also sucked at the time.

Similar to what happens to some of the successful FCS schools when they move to FBS.

Because Cheney is a sh..t hole. The stadium is a joke, ppl are rude and its not fun enough to go through the efforts. If your not a big winning program your won't draw the crowd. They would rather sit home and watch 15 fbs games or do family stuff than go watch psu or suck state lose 3 outta 5 home games a year.

Been to a lot of FCS cities and towns and there is only one I would consider a shithole: Charleston, IL, home of EIU.

UC Davis, Sac State and Cal Poly really don't have a need for anything much bigger than about 12,000 because there would be a lot of empty seats at most games. Once in while when both teams are doing well, there might be enough butts to fill more seats at these rivalry games but why over-build? UC Davis ended up at 10,000 because that's what they had money for. They could easily go to 12,000 by building low cost end zone seats but people already sit there on the grass.

Macomb, IL - home of Western Illinois.
Vermillion, SD - home of South Dakota

Might not be a "shitholes", but it's not much above that

Rank=Of all FCS games for that year

2007 = 27,140
2006 = 22,589
2005 = 23,169

Games against The Whee (naturally) and The Vermin (praise Jebus!) tend to be big drivers, even in November - otherwise crowds historically tend to drop off in late October / early November.

The game with The Convicts of Georgia Southern State Corrections in 2005 only drew 21,486 on 10/15. They must have really sucked that year :D

Using the 4 hr drive-time metric, from my home where I grew up in the SF Bay Area to Division I football staduims:
1. CAL-FBS(15 mins<; not even that)
2. Stanford-FBS (45-50 mins, if traffic is great)
3. San Jose State-FBS (50 mins)
4. UC Davis-FCS BSC [(wooo!) 1hr 05 mins)
5. Sac State-FCS BSC (1hr 25mins)
6 Fresno State- FBS (2hrs 50 mins)
7. Nevada- FBS (3 hrs, 30 mins)
8. Cal Poly - FCS BSC (3 hrs, 30 mins)
I think thats it....

I live in Oregon now, using same format:
1. Portland State- FCS BSC (1 hr, 30 mins)
2. Oregon State -FBS (2 hrs, 40 mins)
3. University of Oregon-FBS (3:05 hrs to 3.5 depending on traffic)
4. UW - FBS (3 hrs, 50 mins)

oh so they meant ULL (sister school to ULM) :mrgreen: Delusional pricks over there think they are going to slide into begin called "Louisiana" as if they were some kind of flagship school. All of their gear has Louisiana all over it and the Lafayette is disappearing fast. I can't wait for GSU and ASU to get up to speed in the Sunbelt and start owning some Cajun ass.
