Zach Zenner and the Payton Award
My question is: Do/Can/Will the Walter Payton Award voters take into effect past year's performances? If ZZ runs for another 2000 yards this year (I think it makes him the first player at the FCS level to do it 3 years in a row) shouldn't he be a shoe-in for the award? It's not all important for him(at least that's what all the good players say), but I think a guy that does that should be recognized in some sort of fashion.

It'll be like the heisman voting which is a joke. He's not flashy enough. If he gets 3k then they MIGHT look at him.

It's pretty much Vernon Adams' to lose.

He finished second in last year's voting, and if he has a comparable season as he did in 2013 it'll be hard for the voters to ignore. He had a pretty strong case in 2013.

With having lost many of his blockers from last season and playing in a tough division, I don't think he's going to be able to put up the same numbers. He still might, and if he does, he might have a chance. However, they've been voting completely based on pieces of flair.

The Nazi's had pieces of flair and you know what they did with those...MTfan4life wrote:With having lost many of his blockers from last season and playing in a tough division, I don't think he's going to be able to put up the same numbers. I figured as much. I don't know how 2000 yards isn't "flashy enough", but I believe you are correct in your statements. That's really too bad, it's a pretty amazing accomplishment if he does it. Unfortunately we play a D3 school this year(don't get me started), I assume he will get some plays and then some rest.

You do recall that South Dakota State lost to D-III Wisconsin-Lacrosse in 2006, do you not? I looked up Wisconsin-Oshkosh and it looks like they are a program that historically hasn't been that good but have kind of improved recently. They reached the D-III semifinals in 2012 and finished 8-2 in 2013. Oh...and they did beat Wisconsin Lacrosse both years!Theee Catrabbit wrote:I figured as much. Re: Zach Zenner and the Payton Award
and there is the fact that he is not a QB, which hurts in chances.
The Sports Network established the Walter Payton award in 1987, and for the first 17 years (up through 2003), the majority of the awards (9) went to runningbacks (7 to QBs and 1 to WR). But from 2004 to the present, the award has been given to a QB 10 consecutive years.

YOU do recall that SDSU was actually D-II in 2006, do you not?JohnStOnge wrote:You do recall that South Dakota State lost to D-III Wisconsin-Lacrosse in 2006, do you not? They were transitioning like NDSU. It was their 4th year out of five in the process. Both had 63 schollys.

ZZ is a very good RB. If he has another 2000 yard season, he will be in strong contention for the award.

I do not recall that. I will not recall THAT! (noted thoughJohnStOnge wrote:You do recall that South Dakota State lost to D-III Wisconsin-Lacrosse in 2006, do you not? Re: Zach Zenner and the Payton Award
Using this logic, Matt Nichols should have won it in 2009 ending up in the top 10 of most FCS career QB stats.
