Losses to UM and MSU. Snubbed due to scheduling (UIW, Menlo) despite late FG win over 1-11 Cal....
UIW is a counter, 9 wins (8 D1) will probably be enough to get an at large berth.
You're in the Big Sky...8 wins with 7 D1 wins is a lock to get into the playoffs...

Normally true, although I think it was NAU who was passed over a couple years back with a similar resume.

You mean 2012?

8-3
1 FBS win (UNLV)
1 D2 win (Ft Lewis)
0 wins over teams with a .500 or better record
lost 2 straight to end the season (Cal Poly and Southern Utah...both AT HOME)

They in no way...no way...not way...deserved a bid.

I don't think he was trying to say they did deserve a bid. He was just proving your claim wrong. We get it, the MVFC is butthurt over 2013. However, each year there is always controversy with the last teams in in any given sport. If you lose 4 or more FCS level games, you don't really have much to complain about if you don't get in the playoffs. Not one team that made the playoffs last season had more than 3 FCS level losses. With a 24-team playoff there are going to be crappy teams making it. Only one team ends up winning anyways.

You make a good argument, as you always do, SD. I'm figuring, though, that there's a difference between a "counter" and a "believable counter." I hear arguments all the time about the viability (or lack thereof) of a win over a MAC as opposed to a win over a better FBS conference. Just figuring that "logic" extends to FCS call-ups with no established "street cred" yet.

NAU's 2012 resume would've been good enough in 2013, but the 2012 field was unusually strong.

This is correct. I wasn't arguing that NAU should have been included, just pointing out that an 8-win Big Sky team was left out (in 2012).

There are some good teams that are left out every year. I get the "stronger conference" argument, but a 7-5 type team from one of the power conferences is not going to get in over a team that's say, 9-3 or 10-2, even from one of the weaker conferences. It is what it is.

At the end of the day, very few 7-5 or 8-4 type teams have a legit shot at winning it all anyway. I mean, was Youngstown State or UNI, or whoever else that was left out from the MVFC going to win the whole thing last season? Nope. When you have lost 4 or 5 games in the regular season, there's usually some sort of weakness that's going to get exposed when you start playing the really good teams in the later rounds of the playoffs.

Was anyone other that NDSU going to win it last season?

Did anyone really expect either UNI or ASU to be there in 2005?

Outside of the 2 3peats recently how often does a team win the title that was a "favorite" before the playoffs?

UNI got their shit straightened out and won 3 in a row to end the season. Would have faired as good/better than anyone not named NDSU in the playoffs.

Who knows. I think EWU would have given NDSU a much better game than Towson did, but that is pure speculation. Just as you are speculating on what UNI would have done. Just because UNI almost beat NDSU during the regular season doesn't mean much. It's about matchups, and you have no idea what they would have done against SELU, EWU, Towson, etc. etc.

Bottom line, you can't lose 5 games in the regular season and expect to make the playoffs. I can see a little more leeway being given to a team who's played a very difficult schedule, but as was mentioned before, there wasn't a single team selected that had 5 losses.

But you can get into the playoffs in a 12 game season with 5...maybe 6 depending who you ask...d1 wins....

Our schedule is uber weak, if we don't get at least 8 D1 wins we shouldn't be considered for an at large. Hell even with 8 D1 wins we are probably just a bubble team.

That's not COMPLETELY our fault, though we probably could have done better than UIW and Menlo. Heck, I would have taken Carroll, PacLu, or Grand Valley State as more of a challenge than those two. If we wanted to go to SLC territory (or a semblance thereof), we'd have done better with UCA or TX State (yes, I know TX State is at least "officially" FBS now). The western Sun Belt schools (Idaho, North Texas, etc.) would have been winnable games with D-I credit. I wouldn't mind getting a home and home with North Texas (even if it were a 2-for-1 deal); I'd love a chance to see my former position coach (UNT's OC and former interim HC) again.

I think NDSU should be 1 for now. They return some significant players on defense. The offense is a question mark after losing QB, starting RB, starting WR, and 4 starting OL. However, I think we will reload. Not saying we will win it all again, but who will have a defense even remotely close to us? EWU gave up some points last season. Same thing with SELA. There will probably be a team that comes out of nowhere too. That being said I wouldnt be shocked if UNI won the MVC this year. I'm glad we play them in November instead of September.

I know the we were dealing with a 24 team field last year and not the 16 team field that was in place for a long time but I was shocked when Sam Houston State was picked after finishing 8-4 including losses in its final two games and the last game being a 49-31 loss to Central Arkansas. But I'm guessing a solid win over highly regarded Eastern Washington early in the season got them in.

Most prognosticators thought SHSU would be in for sure—the elimination of the strict 7 DI-win rule likely helped. They did look stronger on paper than at least SUU and Jacksonville State and proved it against Suutah (who might've been the worst at-large recipient ever).
