Interesting test for Sam Houston State this week
Was looking through the Southland schedule for this weekend and noticed that Sam Houston State plays Colorado State Pueblo. Wasn't familiar with that D2 so I looked it up. Turns out that Colorado State Pueblo is coming off three consecutive years in the D2 playoffs after going 11-1 in 2011, 12-1 in 2012, and 11-1 in 2013. The losses were in the playoffs so three straight years without a regular season loss. Two of the three playoff losses were narrow: 21-24 to Minnesota Duluth in 2011 and 30-34 to Grand Valley State in 2013. In 2012 it was 13-34 to West Texas A&M in the playoffs but they beat West Texas A&M 44-34 during the regular season. They opened the 2014 season by beating a ranked West Texas A&M squad by 35-6.
Chances are good that Sam Houston State, coming off getting really skull-drug by LSU, will be playing a very good D2 team this weekend that will undoubtably go into the game completely unintimidated and probably expecting to win the game. It'll be an interesting score to watch and might tell us something about where Sam Houston State really is. At least i think so.

Should be a good test for them. I think this is the same DII who beat UNC last season...not that that's saying much. Ultimately I think SHSU will beat them.

For the lack of a better phrase, CSU-Pueblo doesn't **** around. They've easily been the 3rd best football program in Colorado the last few seasons, if not the second. It'd be fun to see how they might have matched up with the U of Colorado the past couple years.
I'm sure Sam Houston will win this one, but it very well could be a shootout.

I was going to say, maybe they're a good candidate for that 14th spot in the Big Sky. But then I saw they have under 5,000 students...so yeah, nevermind.

5 D2 programs (Adams State, the aforementioned Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo and Western State)

Re: Interesting test for Sam Houston State this week
Maybe this is why none of them are any good...that's a lot of football programs for a state of that size. Utah, similar situation.bjtheflamesfan wrote:4 D1 programs (Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State and Northern Colorado)Cluck U wrote:

Another DII program is Colorado Mesa. Mesa State is what they were many moons ago when I was in college. Located in Grand Junction.bjtheflamesfan wrote:4 D1 programs (Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State and Northern Colorado)Cluck U wrote:

I also forgot to mention Fort Lewis (I think I listed 4 in my post above despite Cluck U's attempt at smack)

They started a football team a while back, but it went downhill quickly from there.

That's kind of a shame for him, I think, because I think if you read between the lines you can see that Fritz got out when the gettin' was good and left the player personnel cupboard kind of bare. I say that because the implication is that Keeler came in, saw he didn't have sufficient quality of players, and had to go out and get a bunch of transfers.
Kind of leaves the impression that Fritz kind of lucked out getting a good nucleus of players but wasn't able to sustain it then had the opportunity to get out before the effects of that were realized.
