Dayton's Kelly To Retire

Post by BigApp »

DAYTON — University of Dayton football coach Mike Kelly will announce his retirement at a 2 p.m. news conference today at UD Arena.

Kelly, one of the most successful coaches in college football history, compiled a 246-54-1 record in 27 seasons as the Flyers head coach.

UD went 11-1 in 2007, topping off Kelly’s career with a Pioneer Football League title and a 42-21 victory over Albany in the Gridiron Classic at Welcome Stadium.

looks like the DC Chamberlin is taking over. Is this good for Dayton?

Rick Chamberlin is the perfect replacement for Mike Kelly. Rick was a star linebacker at Dayton, and is perhaps one of the best DC's in the nation. He will continue the culture of excellence at Dayton, recruiting should not suffer one iota, and early word is that all the other coaches are staying! I'm sure Rick will bring his own style to UD, but I have no doubt that he is the right man for the job!

From what I have been hearing, recruiting has not been significantly impacted. Of course it is hard to say until the final lists are released, and in Dayton's case, that is usually far after signing day.

The best news is that no coaches have left. We still have our fantastic offensive coordinator, Dave Whilding, and defensive coach Chris Ochs. As I mentioned, Rick has been at UD for a total of 28 years or so.... Dave has been there even longer! The only question I have is will Dayton hire / promote a new defensive coordinator, or will Rick keep that job for a while?

I do not expect any radical changes for the Flyers in 2008. As time moves on, I think Rick will establish his style....

I am looking forward to the Spring game. There are some big holes to fill, especially the departure of Kevin Hoyng. I suspect that UD will continue to run a spread offense, but I'm not certain yet who the new QB will be.... My early guess is Steve Vallentino. Back-up QB, Rob Florian, could come back for a 5th year.... He started a game in 2006 down in Jacksonville and set a UD record for passing yards for a first start! Rob is more of a drop back passer, but he can scramble a bit. Steve will be a junior and played a little after Kevin and Rob in 2007. He red-shirted as a freshman. Steve is perhaps the best athlete on the team. He is very quick and would fit the spread offense well. He can pass, but he is not at the Kevin Hoyng level yet. It could even end up being a platoon system between the two....

Dayton also has a bead on a very promising QB recruit who could compete for a starting role....

2008 will be an interesting year for the Flyers! I cannot wait till that Spring game....
