Compare what SUU and UND have done in football over the past 5 yrs and you see two programs heading in different direction. UND has one of the worst, if not the worst, Basketball teams in the country. Please take UND all-sports BSC and really load that conference up with members, 14 might do it. But remember, UND might refuse the invitation. They spent 5 yrs complaining to the press and trying to pass laws to make NDSU schedule them after UND quit playing. They turned down several contracts this year because we didn't offer them an endless home/home conference type arrangement. You take them. They are nothing but trouble. They love rivalries too, for all the wrong reasons. Just last winter they ganged up on a guy at the Ralph and busted his skull because he liked the Gophers. Yea, you take em.
What teams fly into Grand Forks now? My guess is none, Mnpls or Fargo is all I see. I dont know about hockey. So few teams play that sport a non-fan never hears about it.
I was just thinking......if the gold mine is big enough maybe, just maybe a private airstrip could be built next to the 30,000 set retractable....

But that's beside the point. This is football we're talking, and in that sense SUU might well be good fit. In athletics they've been persistently climbing and are now right on the edge of the BSC.
In regards to money coming in to better the university, UND recently announced a campaign to raise $300M....
North Dakota Spirit: The Campaign for UND will raise $100 million to increase the number of student scholarships awarded; $100 million for endowment funds for faculty support; $50 million to enhance programs to respond to state and global needs; and $50 million to improve existing or add new buildings and technology.
The campaign currently is at $201M
A video regarding the campaign. You may recognize a famous basketball player/coach who happens to be a UND alum.
I sure hope the BSC takes this sales pitch all in. Please BSC take this school.

Arguing over whether UND or SUU is the better team to take is all wrong. Why are we assuming there is one spot left? There are at least 2 if we really are trying to be a 12 team conference. Did you all forget UM is gone? That means we need to full members.
I think SUU is in; if anyone thinks SUU isn't good enough for the Big Sky I would love to know why. UND's quality of facilities look good but distance is the issue not academics/facilities or anything else. Also I was impressed to read about UND hockey team except there is one prob, big sky hockey is club not DI and UND hockey wouldn't be in the big sky.
Why are we only talking about UND and SUU? Who are the other candidates. Are there any others?

The only D-1 schools “available” are USD, UND, and SUU. The only other option would be if a D-II (CWU?) is looking to transition into D-I. Even then I don’t know if the BSC would allow a transitioning team as a member.
Since the BSC is now allowing football only members, they could add SUU as football only until they are free to move into the BSC in all sports. This is assuming for some reason the BSC needs to add football members.
Montana's going nowhere. The legislature will force them to take the Kitties, and no FBS conference will take them, at least not right now.
Montana's going nowhere. They'll be the class of the Big Sky for years to come.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Not only is the WAC begging them, but they have already agreed, in principle to join the WAC. The details are just waiting to be finalized. We'll hear something about it no later than Feb from what I understand.

The WACk is in bad shape. If UM needs MSU then we lose 2.

that would suck....I still say Hawaii is on their way out of the WAC and the BSC will be the better place to be for the foreseeable future. I would be bummed to see Montana leave just as we show up.
The Warriors sure beat the two WAC teams who left... if that's not playing your way in, i don't know what is.
but if the MWC doesn't want them, there's nowhere for them to go and they'll have to make it work in the WAC
LONG LIVE THE NCAC! LONG LIVE SAN FRANCISCO STATE FOOTBALL!
I agree with the point there arent a lot of choices. I order them this way in terms of probability:
1) SUU have been seeking BSC membership. Has upgraded programs to the point they are now at equality with the BSC. They took UNC 7 years ago, this should be a lock now.
2) UND has no conference except what NDSU gave them. Their programs have all greatly diminished over the past 7 years. If the BSC needs 2 no matter what shape UND is in athletically they are in the BSC.
3) USD HIgh probability for football affiliate if needed. All sports is another story with an existing commitment to the Summit.
The BSC was all about footprint and the west coast markets in the past. Now, they are desperate. Geography will only determine the order the 3 candidates will be chosen because the BSC is in survival mode. How far will they reach to survive? As far as they have too.

Although current fellow Great West Conference members Cal Poly and Cal Davis were invited to the Big Sky as football-only affiliates, Faison said no such offer has been extended to UND.
“Football-only has not been afforded us from the Big Sky. The discussion has been strictly as a full member. We’ve certainly asked the question about affiliated membership, but they’re really only considering us as a full member.”
I don't know if that would hold true for other schools or not.
I dont believe Faisons statement. I think he is trying to negotiate an all-sports but is getting football only with commisioner lip service. Faison did the same thing with NDSU scheduling, putting on a big show about how it is needed, sports fans deserve it, we are the best and will beat you etc etc. In the end he turned it down. He uses deception. To understand what he is up to you have to look at the reverse of what he is saying, weigh it and then conclude. To take him at face value is not wise. The only way I would believe the BSC is seeking out UND for all-sports only is to hear the BSC say it too.

You misunderstood what I said, webfan.
I get the feeling that the MT state legislature is going to stick their noses into it by enforcing a two-or-none policy. UM is attractive, but they'll be dropped like a hot potato if one is forced to take MSU to get UM. There are too many land mines involved with MSU.
If UM can find a way to sever MSU, then they MAY go. But that may not be possible.
Plus, a significant chunk of the UM fan base is dead set against FBS. That's something for the administration to consider, too.

I could be wrong about that. If UM wants to go and the WAC (or someone else) truly wants them and if it really is a good situation for them, I would wish them well. But given the proximity to Idaho (where that actually DID happen), not to mention the stuff I've heard on various boards over the last few years, I wouldn't be surprised if MSU DID hold UM back.

Good point that I had not previously considered. What is the beef with SUU academics? How bad is it?
I like the SUU attendance figures, though.

Not an issue as all hockey conferences are hockey specific. North Dakota would remain in the WCHA for hockey...a conference that ranges from Ohio State to Colorado College in scale.

Ohio State is in the WCHA for women's hockey, but they are in the CCHA for men's. The large schools in the WCHA for men's hockey are Minnesota and Wisconsin.
For everything you ever wanted to know about college hockey and then some.... http://www.uscho.com/
The Division I fan forum is hilarious.
UND is content in the WCHA. There are rumblings on the horizon about a Big 10 hockey conference which throw the conferences into disarray.
Interesting folks talk a lot about SUU and the proximity to Weber....potential in state rivalry etc. I did not realize how close Cedar City is to Flagstaff....the drive to SUU from NAU and Weber is about the same.
