GSU's titles don't mean a thing...NDSU, SDSU, ODU, and the real GSU weren't in the division back then, so the copetition wasn't as good.
Gill is just fishing because he made a stupid post on another forum and I called him on it. This is a typically weak effort on his part to get back at me.

But, it's not like UD did anything wrong or sneaky in winning their titles. They did what they had to do with the system that was in place. Their titles are legit. It's not UD's fault that championships were decided by voters back then.
Are you suggesting UD's titles are on par with GSU's?
Yes, because neither teams titles will bring the Angels rookie back to life.

93henfan wrote:The easiest way to think about it is this:

There has always been a top level of football (the Alabamas and Notre Dames), and then other levels under it. UD has never been in the top level, unless you want to go back to the 1800s and early 1900s when there were really no established tiers. Since the tiers and classifications came into being, UD has been in the next highest level below the top level for all but two of those years, namely 1978 and 1979.

Here are names of the top and next highest level of football over the years:

Prior to 1973 - NCAA University Division / NCAA College Division (aka "Small College") - both decided by poll
1973-1977 - Division I / Division II - poll / tournament
1978-2005 - Division I-A / Division I-AA - poll / tournament
2006-present - FBS / FCS - championship game / tournament

As you can see, the next level below the top level has been called various things over the years. The progression for this level of football, terminology-wise, was College Division through 1972, D2 through 1977, D I-AA through 2005, and FCS up through the present.

In 1978, D I-AA was started with just a few teams adopting the first year. Delaware did not make the transition until two years later, winning a D-2 championship in 1979 over Youngstown St (perhaps, you've heard of them). If you really want to dispute any of our championships as being something less than where FCS is right now, then technically you could go after that one, as we were transitioning from D-2 to I-AA a couple years after the first adopters like UMass and FAMU, who played in some of the early four-team tournaments.

Six titles is not debatable. We've won six titles, national championships, whatever you want to call it, plain and simple. Two by tournament and four by national wire service poll (AP / UPI).

Six titles "at this level" is very debatable. You could easily argue five, since we won a D-2 title when there was a D I-AA, even if it was a tiny, fledgling I-AA with a four-team tournament and many of the traditional powerhouses of the current FCS (Delaware, Youngstown, etc) still not transitioned just yet. You can argue just one if you're hanging your hat on I-AA/FCS in it's current format. If you really wanted to be a dick, you can say we have no FCS titles at all. Only App State, Richmond, and Nova have ever won a championship in FCS.

So there you have it. Is that a short answer? Nope. Is it the right answer? Yes, it is. If you don't like it, blow me.

I'll be in Frisco, Texas in a few weeks rooting the Hens on for their seventh national championship.
Really nitpicking here, but it should be 1978-2006 - Division I-A / Division I-AA - poll / tournament

The 06' regular season was called I-AA. The name change to FCS didn't happen until the playoffs.

Maybe that's true, but by that standard UD's three titles in the 70's are certainly no more invalid or irrelevant than GSU's three in the 80's. :kisswink:
I'm tryin' not to get in the way of this awesomeness, but I believe a large part of the argument/issue is playoffs versus polls. I'm not commenting either way on that, just sayin'...

EDIT: But, in an attempt to repair your analogy, you could say that the titles in the 70's are no more invalid or irrelevant as any pre-BCS titles in I-A (or even the BCS depending on your view of the "championship" game).

EDIT 2: And while we're researchin', to include JMU as a team that played football during this time period is a slight stretch. We started football in '72, were a DII Indy from '74 to '76 and a DIII Indy from '77 to '79.
I think you got it backwards. Were a Div III Indy from 74'-76', and a Div II Indy from 77'-79'. Wouldn't make any sense to go Div II to Div III to I-AA.

I agree. I don't tout 6 NC's, but I will argue if SomEone tryies to deny it as a fact.

The only titles that interest me are the ones that I was able to enjoy. At the moment there is only one of those.
I don't know of many people that tout our six championships. The only time I do is when the uneducated start piping off about it. How many times have we seen the cycle repeat itself? ESPN covers one of our games, rightly mentions our six championships, then some short-dick from a school with six or less championships gets their panties in a bunch and starts calling our championships all "D2" or "NAIA" or worse. Bottom line is, Delaware has been a torchbearer school at this level since before many of our parents were born. Our previous three coaches are all in the College Football Hall of Fame and the current one is going to the championship game for the third time in seven years with a chance to get his second ring. To deny that history is disrespectful.
Nitpicking again here, but for Keeler its the 3rd time in 8 seasons, not 7. 03' to 10' is 8 seasons.

No, he's right. It's the same formula they use when claiming 6 national titles at this level....

Ehhh...all I care about is the opportunity to win a National Championship in Frisco on January 7th. Sure it''ll look neat seeing the titles in the trophy case next to one another but let's not pretend we Delaware fans are Notre Dame and thumping our chests for titles before colored TV. In all serious, Delaware has a very proud winning tradition and hopefully the 2010 version of the Blue Hens can scratch their names next to some fantastic Delaware teams prior.

Wow, sounds like you are a bit jealous that App St. doesn't have the long storied history that UD has. Ok, so App St. has won three National Championships in the past decade, one against UD. That is awesome, and I will admit I am a bit jealous of that, but UD will be in 3 National Championships games in the past decade, and is currently 5th in all-time wins in IAA/FCS/etc. etc.

I guess one could say App St. is a modern legend, while UD is a long time legendary program:

Top 10 IAA/FCS Win List below:

1 Yale 865
2 Harvard 813
3 Penn 809
4 Princeton 789
5 Delaware 652
6 Dartmouth 651
7 Lafayette 650
8 Lehigh 641
9 Dayton 621
10 Cornell 620

UD is tied for 30th overall in Division 1, with Navy and North Carolina.
On December 12, 1775 the Continental Congress created a Battalion of minuteman from the three counties in Delaware. Kent county militia were fans and owners of Game Cocks; Fight'n Blue Hens as they were called. The Fight'n Blue Hens became known far and wide as the very best Fighting Game Cocks around. Thus, the Blue Hen was established.
