Fact is, after UNI left the competition level in D2 dropped, and it became easier for a team like NDSU to dominate. Just like how D2 got weaker when NDSU left.
It's not just coincidence that NDSU all of a sudden became the D2 power they were in the 80's only after UNI left.

UNI will remain a big game and an elite program even after the success has gone away. Its the nature of the registry.
