Play fast.
That's been the message Old Dominion football coach Bobby Wilder has instilled in his players for the past three years.
There are many ways to interpret that, but at least one result is clear. The Monarchs run a lot of plays every game...
..."Finding kids in Virginia who can run is like picking apples off a tree," Wilder said. "So playing fast makes sense."
Evans believes the willingness of ODU's receivers to share the spotlight is playing a huge role in ODU's success.
"If one of us runs a fly route and is 40 yards downfield at the end of a play, they aren't coming back to the line of scrimmage," said Evans, a redshirt junior and ODU's career leader in receptions and receiving yardage. "They are peeling off the field; it's next man in.
"That's part of why we can play fast."
It's an approach that might not necessarily pay dividends in the second quarter. But get into the fourth quarter and things start happening.
"Every time we play, we go so fast that I've seen some star defensive linemen take a play off here or there in the fourth quarter," left tackle Ryan Jensen said. "As an offensive lineman, I don't have to pursue the ball the way a defensive lineman does. It's tiring. So we have an advantage and we use it..."

"We ran an 11-play, 67-yard drive Saturday against Richmond in the fourth quarter that took two minutes and 41 seconds," Wilder said. "When a play ends, we're looking to get the next play off in 15 to 20 seconds."
Wilder said he started paying attention to pace of play when Chip Kelly was the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire. From there, Kelly became offensive coordinator at Oregon, and then Oregon's head coach...
