The D2 records are fun arent they! The NDSU BISON In fact have more national championships than any other team.

It was the old D2 days that turned UND into a hockey school. After losing about 8 in a row to the BISON folks at UND would say they dont really care about football, UND is a hockey school. As the years went on they got beaten up so badly at football that hockey really caught on! Those folks just started to love their hockey, which has been about as fruitless as their football. They love teh hockies to the point football is not the primary sport on the UND campus. You can go up to siouxsports.com and read those same kinds of words right now. Thats how bad UND is.

Some might be asking what is the Dakota Big 3 all about? Well my friends its about the shared traditions, relationships, competition, conferences and playing for the championship of the Dakotas for the Dakota fans. The Big 3 compete in the Dakota Time zone, in the Summit and MVFC. They play for the same championships, home play off games and of course the right to say your team is the best college football team in the Dakoats. Right now that right belongs to the NDSU BISON. Thats what the Dakota Big 3 are all about. Not the mundane, temporal things that come and go in an instant.

The Dakota Big 3 are about the higher principals the guide orderly and productive lives. These are concepts some of you are having a problem with and thats completely understandable. Not everyone is equiped to understand these things. But, if you clear your head of your anger and your hostilities I think you can at least begin to understand.

There were no thrashing, at least not by UND. The games were really close. The only team that ever got thrashed during the referenced and totally arbitrary time frame mentnioned above was UND.

The Mighty Dakota Land Grants saw the potential of Division 1, saw they had the means and the market to do it. They moved ahead with the investment against the objections and outright hostility of UND and to a lesser extent USD. UND quit playing because they were so indignant!

Decision 1 was a good move. NDSU has increased in size by about 50%, but Im sure I can agree with the UND folks that its not the size of the school but the quality of the education that counts. NDSU has made tremendous strides there with the research ranking and additions to the curriculum.

SDSU has seen similar success, both on and off the field. Now USD has come hat in hand and has taken the necessary steps to reunite with its true peer institutions. Now they make up The Dakota Big 3!!

No no no no. No need to spin it. NDSU was UND's bitch both on the field and in the classroom. The move allowed you to finally stick it to them/escape the thrashings and join your peer/rival Minnesota on the DI stage.

Its not the mundane WeberWildcat. Save that for game day threads etc. This is about something above that, something you cant grasp yet, maybe never? Its all about the principals that guide ordely and productive lives. Its about common heritage, competition, conferences and cooperation. Its about staying together as a group with 100+ years behind them. Its about celebrating everything Dakota. Its not about Saturday afternoons today or yesterday. Save your bragging for another time. UND doesnt qualify for membership in the elite Dakota group. They are not part of the Dakotas. The past is long gone. UND has yet to beat a Dakota Big 3 team in the modern D1 era. In fact they wont even play NDSU!

Pointing to D2 wins by UND is not a criteria for membership in the Dakota Big 3 anymore than NDSUs victory over Montana at Washington Griz, or their many victories over UNDs peer insititution Weber State, or NDSUs win over Portland State in a D2 national championship game give The BISON any claim to membership in any BSC group other than the winners group!

There are two parts to that. The biggest one by far, is having to be associated with one of JBB's idea. The second part is the only way I want to see SDSU and USD associated with each other is with the scoreboard and SDSU having A LOT more points than they do.

Boy D2 football sure was fun. I can remember back to those days. It was exciting to watch NDSU build the greatest football dynasty the division has ever seen. Other teams sure had a lot of opportunities in the D2 playoffs but bowed out early with no real success often squandering what were the biggest wins in their schools history.

NDSU went on to win 8 national titles in D2 beating one or both of the Montana schools in the playoffs and for the National Championship. NDSU Beat Portland State in a NC game too. I would have to check the record, as most of you, I have moved on from D2. Those battles are in the past. The National Championships certainly will be the stuff of history. Reliving the day to day action of the old D2 days certainly seems a little obsessive to me.

Right now the Dakota Big 3 are looking at an exciting weekend:

1) SDSU kicks off MVFC play against the other Illinois team, Illinois State.

2) USD travels to BCS/FBS Big 10 Charter Member the Wisconsin Badgers. GO Yotes! Kickoff is at 2.30 so this will serve as the early spotlight game. The cougars just beat #1 FCS EWU eagles.

3) NDSU travels to BCS/FBS Big 10 Charter Member The Minnesota Golden Gopers TCF Stadium for a 6:07PM Kickoff! Big game Spotlight game to be sure on Big Ten TV live!!

There have been a lot of folks wondering why other schools from the Dakotas cant be admitted to the Dakota Big 3. Many of you have failed to grasp the higher ideals of the human spirit the creat the bond that makes you a member of the Dakota Big 3.

Maybe this example will help you understand the difference between a regular Dakota school and a Dakota Big 3 memeber:

Certainly the point has been made that in years past in D2 football at least UND was competitive, if you are selective of your time frame, with the Dakota Big 3.

Another competitior from the lower divisions has also been suggested by a few fans.

The two leading contenders are:

a) UND They are hosting NAIA/D2? Member Black Hills State. 1 of 3 or 4 games with lower divisions clubs this year. Enough said. Not a good looking game for a football school bragging about the old D2 days but probably a pretty decent game for a school that doesnt have football on campus as a primary sport. UND has been scheduling a lot of lower division teams over the past several years and have struggled. Losing 1 and barely surviving a couple of scares.

b) University of Sioux Falls Cougars are hosting Minot State, a school that just dropped a game to Montana State. The Cougars have dropped 3 in a row after winning the previous 32. The run may be over but they looked good last week losing the McNeese State 31-17. This team beat UND a couple years ago on UNDs home field in Grand Forks someplace. This is what has caught the eye of some of these fellows and brought the boast the Cougars should be admitted to the Dakota big 3.

Quite a contrast in scheduling!
