Sorry, I thought it was Taylor we were talking about not Bauman. It would have been interesting to see with a couple of years of development what Vigen could have done with Bauman. The issue with Bauman from what I remember was he was not very accurate.
Who was the QB coach at the time they should have worked on his problems.
Bauman's last year was 2021 when Matthew McKay was the starting QB. OC/QB coach was Taylor Housewright. 2021 was the year McKay left after we got beat down by the Griz in Missoula and Tommy Mellot took over for the playoffs took us to the Natty where we got run over by NDSU. Bauman ended up at Augustana (SD) and actually had a cup of coffee in the NFL with the Chargers in 2024. He just wasn't a good fit to what was being run at MSU in those days. He was hurt a lot. The season where he did win the starting job under Choate he only completed 48% of his passes and that was in 2019 where Tucker Rovig took over and led MSU to the Playoffs.

If I was the HC at Washington State he would have been in the NFL and as a starter with his size at 6-6 230 he would have been the next DREW BLEDSOE or dare I say this guys name RYAN LEAF prior to his outburst in the NFL with the Chargers.I remember this guy Rovig as well he had size 6-5 230.

Shit is happening at every level. I’ve been saying for 3 years now:
P4 = Major Leagues/university sponsored professional football.
G5 = the Triple A level of college football.
FCS = the Double A level of college football.
Div II = the Single A high level of college football.
Div III = the Single A low/rookie ball level of college football

Top G5 like JMU lost 17 to P4s. Replaced with a mix of:
-P4 3rd teamers from top programs.
-G5 starters.
-FCS All Conference/AA.
-Div II All Conference/AA.
-Div III AA OT from Nat Champ UW River Falls.

FCS powerhouses like MT ST that lose guys to G5 and P4 have to replace with:
-P4 3rd-4th string, esp those with only 1 year left & on crappy teams.
-G5 2 deepers.
-FCS starters from mediocre & poor teams.
-Div II All Conference who weren’t gobbled up by G5s
-Div III AA who weren’t gobbled up by G5.

Every season it will be like this to some extent.- More so if lose your HC.
JMU Football:
4 Years FBS: 40-11 (.784). Highest winning percentage & least losses of all of G5 2022-2025.
Sun Belt East Champions: 2022, 2023, 2025
Sun Belt Champions: 2025
Top 25 ranked: 2022, 2023, 2025

BDK: Where do you fit NAIA? Many analysts consider most (or at least some) NAIAs to be roughly equivalent to NCAA D-II. Personally, I'd agree with that, but most of the NAIA schools who co-classify in the NCCAA are D-III or worse, and wouldn't even compete with mediocre JCs....

Not really familiar with NAIA. Just looked up there are 94 teams but 0 on the east coast.

Didn’t think NAIA players were allowed in the portal?

Anyway, 683 NCAA teams (see below) + 94 NAIA teams = 777 college football teams (and that doesn’t include JUCO).

FWIW my response to a post on the JMU board on 1/14:
Saw this portal info posted today:
Transfer Portal Update:

There are 10,576 football players that have entered as of Wednesday morning. Of those 10.5K who jumped in, 6,846 are still active and looking for a new team.

There aren't 6,846 open scholarships much less roster
NCAA teams (various sources)
136 FBS
129 FCS
169 Div II
249 Div III
———-
683

If there were 10.5k that entered (can’t find a link).
4,760 Div I entered through Week 1.
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... yers/live/
Maybe some more entered Week 2, but I would think 90% to 99% who enter would do so Week 1 (and most on Day 1). So will just round up to 5k, with the other 5.5k Div II & Div III.

5k Div I /265 schools = avg <19 per school.

5.5k Div II-III/418 schools = 13> school.

My personal opinion NAIA Guys are players that were slept on FCS TALENT that fell thru the cracks.

The OT Zimmer decided to stay and one of the back up WR Jevonte King decided to opt out of the portal and returned. As long as your are upfront with Vigen about the portal, you can come back if you decide. Though I am sure it is a case by case situation. Kid has a lot of upside. MSU has been lucky/good or both on developing players and haven't had to rely totally on the portal. We haven't picked up any transfers that I am aware of at this point. I believe if memory serves me correct Chris Long graduate WR out of Rutgers was our only FBS transfer at this time last year. Lamson didn't sign on until late. There was a CB out of Nevada that came in but was kicked off the team for I think assault. Would like to see a DT and a couple of DB's and a WR sign on plenty of time and players still out there if they decided to go that route. Pretty sure we are set on starters except for CB where we are very young but talented, just like the beginning of this year and those kids played well, one starter signed with Indiana another with Utah and a back up with UCLA.

The transfer portal has just hit South Carolina St and hit them hard in the area of the position of WR say goodbye to Nick Sowell,Nigel Johnson,Rakim White all have left. They all have obvious NFL SIZE at 6-5 200 which would have gotten attention from pro scouts.Sowell has left for Bowling Green, Johnson is at Western Kentucky and White is still looking for a new home.

Wide receiver Nico Brown from Yale, has signed on with Stanford

It sure seems like a lot of the top FCS guys are bypassing G5, and going right to P4 teams

But admittedly, my brain doesn’t automatically recognize P4 and G5 yet
