Western football fans are the most needy people in the world. They play in such obscurity that D2s and NAIA teams are regular visitors to their stadiums. To top it all off they think those games are "sanctioned"? What clowns...
Image
Those games are not counters and shouldnt be scored in the won/loss record of the FCS squad.

What NDSU Football brings to the table is a desire to compete within the division. Seeking out the best competition bringing pride and success not only to the NDSU program but to the conference and the FCS as well. Scheduling D2 and lower teams does not do that. It robs the division of money, exposure and prestige.

Image

The Lafayette game will bring exposure to both schools in new markets. It will establish relationships for NDSU in the all important eastern half of the country where the center of FCS football is found. The west, with 1 conference consisting of mainly middle of the pack teams or worse, is really on life support.

The loss of Seigers is going to leave a hole in the BISON attack. Seigers was a fast and shifty runner. He was just starting to emerge. We have a lot of backs and Hudsons roll in spring ball may be an advanced look at Seigers replacement. Seigers didnt participate in spring ball so the Coach was obviously hedging his bets.

Im not sure whats going on at Lafayette. They dont seem to have any posters here. Im going to start keeping tabs on them and will bring forward any news.

Watching FCS football is fun. The degredation the game is experiencing in the west with the avalanch of lower division, non-counter (sanctioned? ) games is not fun. I know that makes some of you uncomfortable, but its time for you to take a look at that type of scheduling, recognize that it is not in the best interests of FCS football and join NDSU, Lafayette and others in restoring some type of legitimacy to your programs. Western FCS football is truly on the skids.

The Big Sky and GWC are considered "western". The DAC is also considered "western".

Funny, I seem to remember a team from the Big Sky winning the national championship this year. When was the last time someone from your team's conference won it?

All those conferences I listed have teams playing lower division,non-counter games. I guess your definition of "western" really includes the continental U.S.

I sir, was focusing on the west. If you wish to expand the scope and agree with me that the games are non-counters and shouldnt be included in the won loss record I encourage you to do so. Sanctioning   be damned!

I have been making the point that games like Lafayette @ NDSU are good for the division.
1) They keep "FCS" sized money circulating.
2) They build relationships with peer institutions.
3) They lack the off color flavor of exploiting a D2 team for a gate.
4) They dont disrespect your conference by telling them you can afford to throw a game away.
5) They dont set you up for a disgrace like NDSU over Montana or Sioux Falls University over UND.

There are a number of reasons to avoid this type of scheduling. The "NDSU Model" is the way to go. It created this game. A game of national interest and important to 2 major FCS conferences. Minot State doesn't mean a thing.

No one has ever "given" a championship to any MVFC team. Thats a point of pride! 8-)

We have SEC charter member Tennessee this year, then 3-time FCS champ App State for two years after that. I think we're doing alright as a program, DII money games and all, Jimbo. :thumb:

I dont think so. My reasons are posted above. I think you are disgracing the division and trying to over compensate for your shortcoming in the "down scheduling" by bragging about some of your other games.

NDSU had BCS Big 12 Charter member Kansas last season and won. This year we travel to BCS Big 10 Charter Member the Minnesota Gophers, a regular on our schedule. We have FCS teams coming to our stadium to fill out the OOC schedule. We have FCS teams hiding and running from us ie. Georgia Southern. We dont have any excepts about D2 or lower divisions and we are doing fine without the "down scheduling" thank you Jimbo!

Don't call me sir. I work for a living.

Why just bring up the west and especially the BSC ? Call out the SOCON or Southland for instance.

Is ndsu still looking for 2 more games for '12 ? '13 & '14 are 12 game seasons, good luck following the ndsu model .

No MVFC team has earned one in recent memory (like EWU and the BSC), either. 8-) :coffee:

Your obsession with the BSC and GW is getting pretty creepy, JaBBer. We know you wished ndsu could've joined the BSC like your in state big brother UND did, but it just wasn't meant to be. Hell, even UND barely got in by the skin of their teeth. The Dakota schools just don't measure up.

On a side note, it's great to see that the ndsu prairie cows are stepping up and scheduling similar to premier FCS schools like EWU. I mean, Minnesota, Laffytaffy and St. Francis certainly aren't no UW, Cal Poly and USD, but at least they're D-I. :thumb: Don't worry, someday you guys will schedule tough games. You might struggle to get to 6-5, but at least you can hang your head high!

Scheduling is a challenge. I dont know what the future will bring for NDSU scheduling. We have been using the "NDSU Model", keeping games within the division, maximizing our playoff opportunities and building relationships within our own division including the BCS, FBS and FCS, not D2, NAIA, NAIA transitioning teams, D3 or other "sanctioned"  non-counters.

If NDSU is ever forced into scheduling the type of games we are seeing scheduled in the west and from less prestigious D1 programs in the Dakotas we are certainly in a good area to do it. We are only a couple hours away by bus from the D2 national champions. We have long time NCC rivals within easy bus trips. We even have Sioux Falls University a long time NAIA nemesis of Big Sky member UND just down the road. But I dont think that will happen.
JBB wrote:The opportunity for an FCS team like Lafayette to get a competitive game, take decent guarantee money, play in the prestigious Fargo Dome against one of the nations most storied football programs (recent winners over BCS Big 12 Charter Member Kansas) and have the eyes of the nation on the game will be too good for most "straight shooting" schools to turn down. Besides, It's a counter for them too with all the advantages of intra, not inter, divisional play. Its a good deal all the way around. For a properly managed FCS program there should be no need for "down scheduling".
For FCS schools the disgrace and loss of prestige from backing down from NDSU is also something to consider, especially when they schedule an NAIA or D2 instead. I think NDSU will get the games it needs and from the proper division. Its all about making the FCS stronger and scheduling among peer institutions. Ask NDSU and Lafayette fans! :thumb:

Hey JBB, try comparing scholarship levels of a typical western team's OOC schedule (one fcs, one game up, one game down) with a typical schedule of an FCS east team. For instance Delaware last year played Duquese, SDSU, and West Chester. EWU played Nevada, CWU, and SUU. Which was more "honorable", which was more difficult? Or take a look at Portland State from last year who faced Arizona State, Davis, and Oregon, while your herd played Kansas, Morgan State, and USD. This year Montana plays Tennesse, Cal Poly, and WOU while you face Minnesota, St. Francis, and Lafayette...

I just wish Auburn and Oregon would quite disgracing their division by playing down and start scheduling like Big 12 charter members Kansas and Minnesota. :ohno:
