Montana @ Sam Houston State
Re: Montana @ Sam Houston State
Joe Flacco led Delaware on a pretty good run in 2007
Eric Sanders led UNI on a pretty good run in 2005
Now Tim Flanders is leading SHSU on a pretty good run this year.
Okay, so the first two are QBs and Flanders is a runningback, but it's late and I'm easily amused, so I got a kick of that all that when I thought of it just now.

Re: Montana @ Sam Houston State
My thoughts on the game
1. Sam Houston's offense is tricky, to say the least. Will this become another one of those trendy schemes that takes off at higher levels? They took Nevada's pistol & threw the kitchen sink at it by combining the triple option, wishbone, full house, I-form, etc., with it. It's rare to see two running backs in a pistol backfield, much less the 3 we saw at times tonight.
2. Tim Flanders is really good. In addition to the nearly 200 first-half yards, Sam Houston's offense did nothing for about two full quarters until Flanders took the team on his back for the game-ending clock drive.
3. The Griz D took a full quarter (at least) to get adjusted. This is something we've seen at times during the winning streak (the PSU & NAU games come to mind specifically), but the deficit the Griz needed to overcome was bigger this time.
4. Sam Houston won turnovers 3-1, but what's disappointing (to use Pflugrad's favorite word) is that the two fumbles were totally unforced. Posts I've read about them suggest they were JJ's fault, but it appeared to me that Dan Moore was to blame. Both times, Moore was looking to block & just bumped into Johnson's arms (I'm pretty sure JJ was play-actioning & not trying to hand it off on the second one). Also, Moore looked really down on himself on the sideline & Jordan was trying to cheer him up. I don't recall anything like those fumbles happening previously this year, so that was definitely weird.
5. I was surprised at how effective the Griz passing game was, and at how the Griz were largely able to run their standard offense without much discombobulation. I was also surprised at how little pressure SHSU got; I was expecting just a relentless onslaught, but JJ & the O-Line handled it well.
6. Should the Griz have faked that field goal in the first quarter…?
7. We should give props to Barack Obama for taking time out of his schedule to officiate tonight's game. Learning how to referee can't be easy even with lots of training, so to do such a difficult job on the fly is a testament to the President's talent & composure.

weird that now that SHSU gets the win over Montana ya recognize them as a good team, instead of saying that Montana is the wack one like ya did with Montana State the previous week.

editputter wrote:you're definition of a competitive game is out there. SB did play a very good game against Sam but so did Montana but turnovers and being undisciplined at times hurt the Griz. Down by 21 and having a shot at taking the lead in the 4th is a gutsy game by any measure.SeawolvesFan90 wrote:Well, there goes SHSU. I said it all season long. Everyone here like to call teams under-rated just because they don't belong to the CAA, BSC, or a top conference. Montana is out. I'm proud to say that Stony Brook played a more competitive game against the number one team on the nation than any other team so far. We led for half of the game, and almost pulled a victory. SHSU deserves the Number 1 ranking as I said countless times. Congrats SHSU
No need to see who can piss higher. You only get to look at the final score and both SB and UM get the same consolation prize this year. Good luck in 2012

Congrats Sam, you have a hell of a squad, and I severely underestimated you.
That 4th down conversion was a fuckin' kick in the pills.
Hats off to the Griz for storming back and not throwing in the towel after going down early. A loss is a loss, but this team showed a shitload of heart the rest of the game.
