It's a catch 22.. The less money a school has, they more they shy away from FBS. However, the more they shy away from FBS, the less exposure, athletic talent, & money they have. and so on.. The powers that be have to think IN REVERSE; the more exposure, talent & money (put into athletics) we have... the more MONEY WE GET! And THAT... is why big time schools STAY big time schools. :ugeek:

ps. that should be the "Post of the Year".

Montana did not gain the dominance until Boise, Nevada and Idaho moved up. App State was in Marshall's shadow.
Let's don't get ahead of ourselves  The team that shall not be named left the conference in 1996. ASU domination started in 2005. :?

Also, everyone thinks that Marshall was dominant. Yep they did well in the playoffs. But they didn't dominate the SoCon. I think they won a grand total of 3 SoCon Championships (maybe 4) That's not dominance 8-)

Since I'm an FBS guy and I follow conf/div movement like a mad man let me tell you what I know.

So far the NCAA still plans on lifting the moratorium in 2011 with the only change being you must be an active D-II member for 5 years before going D-I. So Say an NAIA school like Oklahoma City wants to move to D-II they'd do 3 year provisional then be D-II 5 years before moving D-I. So Lipscomb, Houston Baptist, Utah Valley would have had to wait 13 years if they wanted to do a direct move from NAIA/JUCO which was 7 years going into the moratorium. D-II to D-I is still the same. 1 exploratory 4 provisional.

Okay the good for you guys. Schools exploring D-I
N.Alabama (probably OVC)
W.Georgia (Probably Big South)
N.Kentucky (no fb) (probably OVC)
Lincoln Memorial (no fb) (probably ASC)
LeMoyne (no fb) (probably AEC)
Grand Canyon (no fb) (Great West)

The ones that could move to FBS soon
Texas St.
Jacksonville St.
UTSA (after 2 years in FCS)
Charlotte(after 2 years in FCS)
Georgia St.(after 2 years in FCS)
Lamar(after 2 years in FCS)

Talk on Georgia So., Sacramento St. & UMass to FBS seems to have died

Dominoes from the Big 10 going to 12/Pac 10 to 12 and FBS move ups will probably cause this
UC Davis to the WAC and a real push for Montana
Tarleton St. & C.Oklahoma to the SLC

You really think that Ga STate and Charlotte will make the move in 2 years. Honestly, It's fine with me. I am not a hater of schools that make the jump, but that is real fast.

it seems from what I read is that they will NOT charge a $1 Million app fee. Just what I posted which seems real minor. I expected this. The last 2 year Moratorium 2002-2003 was a 3 year to 5 year move up process which was still way better than the 13 year one that was in place in the 80s-mid 90's. A lot of the moratorium is to just stop the influx for a few years. There was also a new rule put in at the D-II & D-III level that I think D-I will adopt in 2011. You can only have a max of 10 schools come in, in a year. There were 15 D-II apps last year 8 got rejected. So I see tougher policy on who gets in. NJIT would have been a no vote. They were tough too at the D-II level, McKendree solid NAIA school w/ football along with Malone and Walsh who have football and decent stadiums from what I hear(one plays at Canton's HOF stadium) were all turned down. I believe they will all re-apply this year.

OL FU let me be more clear depending on what is open in the CUSA and Sun Belt. It could be 3 or 4 but if an opening pops up its 2(You must be FCS for 2 like S.Alabama). Charlotte and UTSA might miss the boat. They should have started football this year so when the dominoes fall they would have been no brainers for CUSA, WAC(UTSA), or Sun Belt.

OK, I'll buy the possibility. This is also why I get a good chuckle when SoConers think we should go after those schools. I will never understand inviting a school that plans to leave. If they are already in your conference, like Ga STate in the CAA that is one thing. But don't invite a school who is going to leave in two years or even ten.

Just to put an end to the rumor of Marshall's dominance. Marshall joined the conference in 1976 and left in 1996. The following is a list of the football champions during that period.

1976
East Carolina (NC)
1977
Tennessee-Chattanooga
Virginia Military Institute
1978
Furman (SC)
Tennessee-Chattanooga
1979
Tennessee-Chattanooga
1980
Furman (SC)
1981
Furman (SC)
1982
Furman (SC)
1983
Furman (SC)
1984
Tennessee-Chattanooga
1985
Furman (SC)
1986
Appalachian St. (NC)
1987
Appalachian St. (NC)
1988
Furman (SC)
Marshall (WV)
1989
Furman (SC)
1990
Furman (SC)
1991
Appalachian St. (NC)
1992
Citadel (SC)
1993
Georgia Southern
1994
Marshall (WV)
1995
Appalachian St. (NC)
1996
Marshall (WV)

I count three for Marshall. to put it in perspective

Chattanooga had 4
App State had 4
Furman had 9.

Well you know how much I like Marshall

Honestly, though I know people think that Marshall was dominant and you know I can understand people's perspective because of their playoff success. But I think the above list of conference championships should tell people, that while Marshall had some outstanding teams, they didn't even dominate the SoCon. :ohno:

Looking at that list makes it look like GSU has always been irrelevant in the conference, not just the last 4 years.

If indoor and outdoor track are counted as 2 sports we are at 16 already so it would be easy. If they are not we are at 14. It would be easy enough to add gymastics, swimming, men's volleyball and/or tennis to make up the diff. Plus, UT and a few others have rowing. You know UT has a big time swimming program and we could recruit easily enough. Lots of high schools have teams down here. (not as much as they did where I am from though)

I'd still rather we established a better tradition with our football before considering FBS but that's not the case. And don't EVEN go into the horror that is our basketball programs.

Although, would we have to add another women's sport to make up for the add'l football schollies? There are already 2 more womens sports than mens

Is that something that's enforced? I happened to be going to Central Michigan's website to look at their roster while I was watching this game and noticed they only field 14 teams.

If you delve a bit further they have results for indoor and outdoor for m & w so, as was stated, that counts as 2 different sports. I can't imagine an outdoor track meet in Michigan, in January......

It is strictly enforced. Tulane and UNO had to get waivers after Katrina.

As CatMom said, Track is four sports - men and women indoor and outdoor.

Ah, ok. I missed that about track.

Wow, so in that case App fields 20 teams. Didn't realize that was so high, relatively.

With UNO and Denver headed out of the Sun Belt, and possibly one more. Two spots quickly open up there. The WAC really needs to add new members and so on.

With the push Texas State is making I really see them moving up even though we'll most likely end up in the Sun Belt or if we get lucky the WAC.

Of course conferences could fall apart (Big East, CUSA) and new ones could form.

I'd really like to see us with the Texas and schools in surrounding states.

I could see Charlotte moving up in 2 years or so. First of all, the support for UNCC to start up a football program has been a hot topic for many years and now that they have been in the final stages of putting it together the support has fizzled. They have gotten to go ahead and looked to join the SoCon but were denied. A large part of that is because the school is planning to make the jump to FBS soon after starting in 2013 even though they faces issues with the new stadium and donors.

Let them all leave! Youngstown State is going nowhere and maybe by then we will be back on top! In all seriousness, our new coach has been very impressive so far and if he can get a JUCO/FBS QB to come into town, we'll be tough to beat next year.
