OK, add Nicholls State to the All-Misspelled Conference

I've seen quite a few people misspell Prairie View as well.
This isn't FCS but FBS... The South Florida Bulls put USF on all there T-shirts and stuff but ESPN and other stations/websites still calls them South Florida. I may be mistaken but I believe the school even said that they rather be known as USF over South Florida. So... If there are any USF/South Florida fans on here, What are you called?

This question came up on the Laxpower forum about why the University of Denver went by DU. The answer given:
"The reverse initials "DU" are used as the university's shorthand moniker (rather than the more intuitive "UD") as part of a Rocky Mountain and midwestern tradition of initial reversal, similar to the University of Colorado's "CU", the University of Tulsa's "TU", the University of Oklahoma's "OU", the University of Nebraska's "NU", and the University of Kansas' "KU."
Same goes for University of Missouri -- MU.
Hmm...interesting. Thanks for the info. Always wondered about that. Crazy midwesterners.
I believe the reversal is used to make the schools be "informal" I think the appeal was for the schools to no always be so formal in all matters.
I have frequently found myself scratching my head over some posts that refer to "LU" and I have no idea what's being discussed, when I finally see the talk is about Liberty and Lehigh. Lehigh has always been "LU" as well. Indeed, when I played, we had white helmets with big interlocking "LU" in block letters on both sides of the helmet. We played Liberty a few years back in Lynchburg, but I don't think anyone confused to two teams as the Mountain Hawks won handily, 34-16. Liberty was supposed to make a return trip a couple years ago, but the Falwells backed out of the contract. Still looking forward to that one.
Lehigh Will Shine Tonight, Lehigh Will Shine; When the Sun goes down and the Moon comes Up, Lehigh Will Shine!

South Florida isn't "incorrect", it just isn't the "preferred" nomenclature.
UNI has issued statements that they prefer to be called either UNI or the University of Northern Iowa, instead of just Northern Iowa or "No. Iowa", but of course that doesn't stop ESPN from using both of the latter.

Not really a fan but I live in Tampa. Everybody here says USF.

If they're anything like my neighbor it would be "jerk."

* Note - keep seeing 'SHS'. Not sure where this came from, but SHSU is the preferred choice of those in Huntsville, Texas.
Is there any truth to the rumor that Dan Rather helped make the change from Sam Houston Institute of Technology to Sam Houston State University when he wore a T-shirt with the initials of the former to a football game?

Similarly, referring to it as "Northern Iowa University" is incorrect (just as saying, for instance, Southern California University).
Also, they're in Cedar Falls, not Cedar Rapids...
Troof.
I can't even count how many times has said "Weclome to the UNIDome in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tonight we will see the Northern Iowa University Panthers take on __________. You can substitute McLeod Center for UNIDome and the same thing happens.
I just want to thank TT for making note of what happened on BCF. However, he failed to mention I put CCU under the NEC, yet he had to question whether I was an idiot putting Coastal Carolina in the NEC. I'm not that damned stupid. I wasn't confused, in any way, shape or form. I was trying to get a list up, as fast as I could, of teams with open dates. Specifically for Sept 11.
Made another typo that he found hysterical and was chided (nastily) for not knowing TSU had filled their Sept 11 date weeks ago. It's not anywhere I could find.
The boy doesn't know how to point things (mistakes) out without being a total ass about it. And now we have this thread

I'm pretty sure we all recognized his true motives here Catmom. The good natured ribbing between friends is rarely confused with the vindictive nature of things that you two enjoy.

This thread just goes to show you much of the confusion with acronyms by the schools in FCS. You can imagine the craziness when you include schools of FBS, Div II, Div III, etc...
It's a valid thread, whether a knock on your misinformation or otherwise. Hey, that may be my opinion - but we're all entitled to one, as you've made clear numerous times in the past, eh?

However way it came to be, I think it is a useful thread. Sometimes people get caught in their own little "mailboxes" that they fail to realize that the acronym they use for a particular school may mean a totally different school on the other side of the country. Case in point, all the "MSU" schools that are out there. I try to use acronyms for the Big Sky schools only and then spell out those that are outside the conference. If I'm providing just a score or quick information, I will usually spell out even the Big Sky school. I don't always, but I try to.
Another one is Southeastern Louisiana...we prefer to simply go by Southeastern, or if SLU if need be, but we are not SELU nor SELA, even though our official school website is selu.edu...only reason for that is because Saint Louis University had already taken slu.edu.
g-webb1994 wrote:Only one we have to worry about is George Washington University in sharing the GWU acronym. I'd love to see them play in hoops sometime.
We played NIU in basketball earlier this year. Thankfully ESPN didn't give a damn about the game though or they would have shit themselves trying to keep it straight.
While I agree it's a good thread and people are responding to help keep us all straight and up to date...it could have been started differently. Like, without the reference.
And I will still use SAM as long as others use
Texas State University - San Marcos
