They'd be better served by doing exactly what practically everyone else has to do and schedule two FBS games (hey, the Griz have a good shot at getting a W anyway), along with their annual Western Dixie State of Colorado Mines Institute College. I mean, the Griz are always going to go 9-0 in conference anyway right?
Edit: typos
How would we be better served by scheduling the two FBS' teams? You know of one...let alone two that are gonna pay us $700K/yr. to go play them?
That amount right there for a game against Western States is why I know that this is pure bullshit by the AD.
If only the Griz could play against themselves, all their problems would go away.

I'm playing with myself right now. It is fairly satisfying.
Interesting article in today's Kaimin discusses some of the athletic department's budget woes and their plans to deal with them. In summary the AD lays out 3 options:
1. Reduce the number of out of state scholarships: The AD states that this change means "We're not going to win." This would start 2012
2. Move to Division II
3. Move to the WAC: Per the AD: This move would increase revenue, but it is not likely to happen because of the moritorium and the initial costs.
Being a noob poster, but professional lurker I feel like beating the dead horse . This looks to me like the AD is priming the pump to move to the WAC. He lays out 3 options and two of them won't be very popular: Not winning as much and moving to Division 2. He states that the WAC move couldn't happen until 2011 so it would be unlikely, but at the same time the article states that the scholarship change wouldn't happen untlil 2012.
In the end the article concludes that reducing out of state scholarships is the likely course of action, but I think this is just ruse to get more people on board with the idea of moving up. It seems like he laid out 2 options of moving backwards and one that appears to be moving forward. People don't like going backwards.
Then again maybe he is really just going to cut scholarships like he said.
In studying a move from the Big Sky to the WAC (as talk always surfaces about Portland State going to the WAC), I can't see how it can increase revenue. The large footprint of the WAC, stretching from Louisiana to Hawaii alone has to take a tremendous amount of money out of the budget just to cover expenses. Also, looking at money to increase the scholarship level and bringing the facilities up to FBS standards as well has to take a big piece of the pie, too. Not much opportunity for even the football team to save money either as would they really want to take a bus from Missoula to Moscow, Boise or Logan in late November? Also UM would run the risk of losing their natural rivalry, Montana State, and replace it with what, Idaho?

Are you helping O'day with his math on this issue?
20 years of playing us once a year. Twice a year is a whole 'nother story my friend.
Sure it is. Don't know what your basing it on but...if you want to believe it go for it.
At that rate though in the last 10 yrs. you would have handed us another loss in one or maybe two of the years so you are kinda stretching there elastic man.
Montana is in a tough spot with scheduling. We already have one cupcake home money game on the schedule. We could buy out one of the FCS OOC teams to schedule an FBS team. I would imagine that due to our past, our OOC contracts are probably written to make it financially difficult to buy out. Plus I think we are trying to not have that reputation any more.
The flip side is maybe would could buy out some games and play some FBS teams. Perhaps there are other measures we could take to save money, but we aren't doing it because the underlying motive is to move to the WAC. The AD claims in the article that it would be an option that would improve the bottom line. He doest make any claim that it would cost more he just states it would improve revenue.
With all the revenue it would generate for the cost of instillation, it's surprising your AD didn't think about laying down some orange turf. What a Moran.
(on a side note: When looking for the "Get a Brain Morans" image... you may come across Moran Atias. Definitely worth the view)
(on another side note: what's with all the misspellings on the board today. Just look at the jagweed above me. "Were" "Where" What's the difference?)

Maybe UM should just install maroon turf. That's sure to increase revenue.
yes, it is bad everywhere.
I don't wish bad karma on anyone, but there were a number of Griz posters laughing at the budget problems for NAU/EWU last year, claiming the mighty Griz would never be in the same boat.

Almost all of our recruits are in state. And we have many wealthy alumni.

Dback, I must have missed that. Who was laughing at the budget problems? I just don't remember that at all.

That's right, you don't venture into the cesspool that is eGriz...(sorry Chris)

If any of you are accountants you can go ahead and pick apart my choice, since I'm sure the holes are glaring
The bookstore is privately owned/operated, they just lease space in the UC. Are we just going to refuse to let them sell merchandise anymore?
I think he's talking about stadium sales not the stuff at the bookstore. I know the vendors like SaWaDee that have a spot at the stadium pay a pretty good fee for the thing and I don't think that money goes to the athletic budget as a revenue.
