I'm simply addressing the fact that you said we haven't played anyone...the rest was just additional detail. Do I personally think we're a playoff team? Hell no. Do I think we can beat some playoff bound teams? Hell yes. But that doesn't matter 'cause that's not how it works. However, I do believe we're a good win for Cal Poly. Both CP and W&M played ODU in a sold-out crowd, in identical weather, and early in the season. Hell, ODU even put on black jerseys for both games. Cal Poly scored 50 and won by 13. W&M score 21 and won by 4. Cal Poly led for 50 minutes. W&M led for 4 minutes. Cal Poly had to travel across the country. W&M had to travel down a highway...SDHornet wrote:The close loss to ranked opponents argument hasn’t gotten anything for Sac State, no reason why it should be any different for ODU or anyone else.∞∞∞ wrote: We haven't played anyone? If W&M is the #1 team in the country, I think Cal Poly is deserving of a playoff spot.

ODU is going to make some noise in the CAA in the coming years.

Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
Sorry I’m still not buying. So ODU is suppose to be a quality win for CP because ODU barely lost to a really good team (W&M) who is close by and then ODU turned around and lost big at home to a team that traveled thousands of miles to lay a smack down and that makes a win over ODU more meaningful? And since when is jersey color taken into consideration of determining a “quality win”? Ultimately it’s what happens on the scoreboard that is all that matters. If anything, the logic you just posted hurts the CAA as W&M squeaked by a team with a questionable schedule while CP traveled to the east coast and opened up a can-o-whoop-ass. Either way, I still have a hard time seeing ODU as a “quality win” for CP, or anyone.∞∞∞ wrote:I'm simply addressing the fact that you said we haven't played anyone...the rest was just additional detail. Again I’m not trying to dis any of the programs listed above as CP has a very respectable program and ODU is definitely laying the foundation to be competitive in the CAA. I am just not buying on the quality win aspect of it.

Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
Not going to elaborate too much; Im biased and most folks will be quick to point that out. I would say if we win out were are in. I hope the team is only thinking about Davis and not about this "will they wont they" stuff.
If they win next week and when the season is over I would expect that they will be ranked in the top 16 in the polls that matter if they do. Really not sure what the requirements are to say a win is "quality" versus just a win. What I do know is that no other FCS team in the country played a tougher road schedule in terms of miles traveled and no one that I am aware of played 5 roadies in a row.....They should get credit for that. Cal Poly is definitely a playoff team at 8-3

Logic doesn't get much more flawed than this. ODU's 3 losses this season are all to ranked teams (and all fairly close games). Jacksonville, W&M and Cal Poly are all very good teams and ODU played all 3 very close.SDHornet wrote:Sorry I’m still not buying. To say we haven't played anyone is just dumb. Cal Poly's win on the road at ODU is a quality win, to argue otherwise is just stupid. They were the only team who really dominated ODU from start to finish this season.

J'ville, a Pioneer Football League team who got curb stomped by App as their only challenging game is a tough opponent for ODU?Jacksonville, W&M and Cal Poly are all very good teams and ODU played all 3 very close.
W&M - No argument here, so that is 1 tough game for ODU
CP - A team that has struggled, yet still won games, traveled across the country and beat ODU like they stole something. Ok, tough opponent for ODU, obviously not for CP.
Yeah I am dumb, really really dumb.To say we haven't played anyone is just dumb.

Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
If Cal Poly finishes 8-3 with 7 D1 wins they are in. If they end up tied with Montana i still feel that they will get in before the Griz do, but probably if they tie both teams will get in. I really hope that both teams get in as i am a fan of the Griz and of Cal Poly (except when we play of course).
And if your going to bring up the "we should get in with 6 wins argument" Grizpack then im totally going to start saying SUU should get in if we beat EWU . There is no way that will happen, if the Griz only have 6 D1 wins when the season ends...well no playoffs, which would be a shame as their playoff atmosphere, and that of Washington Grizzly Stadium is one of, if not the best.grizpack wrote:The 6 wins is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. The Griz will get in with a win in either of their last 2 games. The NCAA can (and will) overlook guidelines when $$$$ is considered. And UM brings a LOT of money to the table.
Not saying it is necessarily fair or deserving (and I am a Griz fan), but I would bet that is the way it would work out.

SUU has never played a road schedule like Poly played this year. I think you would be hard pressed to find any team who has.89Hen wrote:Credit for hitting the road? Easy for a poster who can throw a rock and hit 10 different FCS schools and only has to schedule 3 OOC game each year. Cal Poly has to schedule 7 OOC games. That is why we are so excited to be joining the Big Sky in 2012.89Hen wrote:Well trying to garner sympathy for stupid AD won't get you very far.SloStang wrote: I think he is talking about 5 straight weeks on the road in 5 different states (Texas, Louisiana, California, Viginia and Utah).
The schedule originally was set up to have two road games, then a bye or home game and then two more road games. Fresno State had a chance to play Cincy on the openning weekend on national TV and could only move our game to our bye week. It was very late and we were still scrambling to fill one more home game. We needed the check from Fresno and sucked it up and said ok. We really had no other alternative. We ended up 3-3 (3-2 vs FCS) on the road that also included a trip to South Dakota. We are 4-0 at home.
Just curious, what is Delaware's farest trip this year?

Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
No such arguement. We are just saying that Cal Poly schedule was made tougher by traveling 5 straight weeks and that NO OTHER team in playoff consideration had a rougher travel schedule. Yes we made the schedule, but had little choice seeing we are isolated on the west coast and need to schedule 7 OOC games. If you do not think that much travel has an effect on a team you are crazy.89Hen wrote:Exactly what? Sure it's tough, but I don't think it will be a consideration for the selection committee. My last commet was because for some odd reason you tried to bring UD into this converstaion. Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
The most deserving teams based on performance don't always get in. To be honest, I'm not sure Cal Poly deserved to be in the field in 2005 based on the regular season, but got in because you were an attractive new team. The selection turned out to be a pretty good one as you managed to beat Montana (a VERY similar 8-3 Montana team to this year) in a rematch game and you got I-AA into a new area. Your losses to a 6-5 Cal Davis and a horrible 4-7 Troy (they had four losses in which they scored 7 points or less). I can't recall who the team was that you won out over. It was the year after the term Woofed came to be.SloStang wrote:So you are saying Montana is more deserving or are you saying the selection commitee will take them for the $$$$$. Re: Cal Poly - IN or OUT?
Wait, why is it an either/or proposition for CP & Montana? I'm guessing both will get in at 8-3. I'm also guessing that both of them will be considered ahead of an 8-3 Montana State (CP beat Montana, Montana would beat MSU in this scenario). They all would likely go ahead of any 4-loss team (Furman/GSU, UMass/UNH/Richmond/Villanova) as well as a 9-2 SEMO or a 9-2 SCSU (Jax State losing to SEMO makes things trickier since they have a better resume than SEMO assuming they win the other game). Those 3 teams also would likely go ahead of an 8-3 UCA.
I'm guessing UM, MSU, & CP will all make it at 8-3. If everything breaks a certain way, one or more could be left out, but I don't see it happening. The Bobcats could get denied if they get waxed in Missoula, but that's unlikely.
At-large contenders definitely ahead of an 8-3 UM/MSU/CP
Delaware
Villanova (if they get to 8-3, which I think is unlikely)
UMass (if they get to 8-3, which I also think is unlikely)
Wofford/App State (whoever loses)
Jax State (if they don't win the OVC, assuming they beat Tennessee Tech)
At-large contenders roughly even with an 8-3 UM/MSU/CP
Western Illinois
NoDak State
At-large contenders likely or definitely below an 8-3 UM/MSU/CP
Central Arkansas
Southeast Missouri (if they don't win the OVC)
Any 7-4 CAA team
SC State
Furman/Georgia Southern (whoever wins)
UTC (if they get to 7-4, which is tough but plausible)
Dayton/Jacksonville
Old Dominion
Jax State (if they lose out)
