Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
Coach Wilder voted his team last in the CAA preseason rankings, keeping things realistic for his team. "We have to earn our way from the bottom up."

Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
I've been surprised by ODU thus far (W&M LY)...still, if JMU is beaten by a first year start-up we have some serious issues to deal with in our big, shiny new stadium.
I know somebody plays in Norfolk but it seems like an former NC should get some love and play the newbie at home...plus I know ODU would bring the buses and help fill up our new digs for maybe the third time.

and to think a couple posters were criticizing me for one of my previous posts in regards to the Delaware game. I wonder what they have to say about Wilder picking his own team last.VBR_Productions wrote:Coach Wilder voted his team last in the CAA preseason rankings, keeping things realistic for his team. Good motivational strategy with the possibility to lull an opponent to sleep on Wilder's part. You can bet that's not what he is saying in the locker room.VBR_Productions wrote:Coach Wilder voted his team last in the CAA preseason rankings, keeping things realistic for his team. My guess is that ODU will win between 2 and 4 CAA games this fall.

8 D-I games in 2009 = no chance of actually making the playoffs. Even last year would have been tough at 11-0.CAA Flagship wrote:Actually, this is the third year of playoff eligibility...

Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
We had 9 D-1 games in '09 and won 7 of them. But yeah, the schedule was still too weak. I think at 11-0 last year, we would've been in. That'd mean we would've taken out the CAA Champion.89Hen wrote:8 D-I games in 2009 = no chance of actually making the playoffs. Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
I think we'll learn some things about ODU before then. Have only seen them once, but against us last year their offensive play calling featured lots of quick release passing, including many to receivers behind the LOS. Looked to be designed to compensate for inexperience on the O-line. With more experience there, it will be interesting to see if the play calling has evolved.andy7171 wrote:Best chances for a win HAS to be at home versus Towson. What happens at Delaware will be very telling for the rest of the season. After that who know what will happen at Rhody. They seemed to turn the corner last year, but they are in the midst of downgrading their program. Who knows what kind of team comes out of there.
Also, their no-bye-week schedule will likely increase the chance that we'll get to see how much depth the Monarchs have at this point in their development.

ODU has already claimed their first CAA football victims. Just ask all those CAA recruiting coordinators that have been shut out of the vaunted 757 because of the way ODU is kung-fu gripping all those recruits other programs crave.
I think they'll probably knock off either Rhody or Towson.

Personally I think It'll either be Rhode Island or UMass. (but whaddo I know? I'm a newbie here...) And although I'd absolutely love to beat Delaware at their home turf.... I'm not banking on it.
And Towson should be an absolute gimmie. If the team that went 0-8 in the CAA last year beats us at our home turf on Homecoming... I will be VERY worried.

For your enjoyment State Line, Percy Harvin's Minnesota Viking Highlights. ODU will continue to recruit here in the overly celebrated 757 and hope to see 757 ODU players in the NFL too. In time we will. Maybe we'll see Jonathan Plisco's stunning punting highlights soon.

First chance and first time ODU should be favored is Towson. Lose that one and there are no ODU threads on here for a very very long time...

Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
I don't know about that. We are not underestimating Towson. In fact Coach Wilder is right, we should be picked last. Regardless on how we do in the early games, the Las Vegas books probably will have us a slight underdog. ODU fans aren't too concerned with the outcome of this year. It's our first year. But everyone knows the Monarchs didn't start football just to have football, we are going to compete for and win championships.bluehenbillk wrote:First chance and first time ODU should be favored is Towson. Love the UMass talk. Please remind me, what's the best team that ODU has ever beaten? A 6-5 MEAC team? Yeah, they did a respectable job losing their #1 rivalry game to W&M. A team that UMass beat, you might recall. Our respectable loss was to Michigan.
Even Towson beat the Big South champions. ODU has never beaten anyone on that level. They've barely even faced anyone on that level. But go ahead and bank those wins. We're probably not much better than North Carolina Central.

I dont think anybody is guaranteeing any wins from what I've seen in this thread except for the one GSU fan. We're just talking about which games would give ODU the best chance to get their first win in the CAA. Also I wouldn't be offended if I were a UMass player/fan, that would actually motivate me.

Re: ODU's first CAA football victim
You see a giant rising. After the W&M game, the naysayers were on CAAZONE telling us we will be competitive in the CAA early. We are humble but aware of what we have. A golden pipeline backed by thousands of supportive ODU fans. I laugh at the analysis of the 3 year old program. I think there's some anxiety in your post. I believe you think UMASS can be beaten by ODU and you're frightened about it.LastMinuteman wrote:Love the UMass talk. Please remind me, what's the best team that ODU has ever beaten? The fact that someone other than an ODU fan predicted it is quite telling.
Thanks panama, for that indepth analysispanama wrote:Its going to be UMass. Bank it.

Like I said, it's our first year and no worries. But ODU fans know this program will compete for championships.
UMASS just lost brand recognition by joining the MAC. You just told your fans we're going to fail as a football team. Oh better get a leg up on your competition. Western Michigan is already dipping in ODU's backyard, the famous 757 recruiting cookie jar.

A grand total of Four people in this thread have at the very least suggested that we might beat UMass, including me. and I even included a qualifier. And I think so because it'll be ODU's first game at home against the CAA, there'll be a buzz in the air. But, who knows? We'll find out in a few months now wont we?

One thing you can bet on and guarantee is that its going to be the WM game all over again in regards to excitement from both the fans and players. Lets just hope there are fewer personal foul penalties this time around.
