Big Sky announces TV deal

Post by EWURanger »

Wow, there are several schools that only have one game, and Cal Poly with zero games. I could see why they would televise a lot of Griz and Cat games - that makes a lot of sense when you are #1 and #2 in the conference in attendance, but I'm a little surprised that they chose so many games that fall in the "away" category for those two schools. Seems like they'd want to televise home games for them to show off the facilities/crowd.

Come on, that one was always gunna be televised no matter what. It's probably the most high profile game minus Griz/Cats. :)

i already pay $93/month on dish, no reason to pay $12 more for a sports package to get "roots"

wasnt that a slave movie with oprah peeing?
It's what replaced Fox Sports Northwest, and I think Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. I've got all of the Root channels plus a bunch of others standard as part of the sports package with Directv. Pretty sure you can get it on Dish as well. Awesome if you're like me and can't watch all the games live.

Good thing Cal Poly signed a deal this last season with KSBY TV to televise three games a year. If not, Cal Poly would be totally screwed.

Just checked the original release and it said Root would televise up to 18 football games. They only list 12 so maybe there will be a few more games televised.

Was the deal signed prior to the move to BSC? If so I'm curious if that was voided or will cause Root to not televise any home CP games until that contract expires. I would bet the Sac-SLO Showdown will be one of those games, is that network televised in the Sac area?

The Causeway is probably one of the more high profile BSC matchups now that is an all BSC game. If Root had a CA network, no doubt it would be picked up by Root (the Causeway has been televised regionally on Comcast for at least the past 3 years).

Yes, I was thinking the same thing and I know that's a big game. Would have been a great one to televise.

He has yet to make an appearance on our board.

Anyone have an idea on how the revenue splits will work under this new TV deal? What were the old splits, if any?

The deal was signed after joining the Big Sky, but prior to the Direct/Root deal. It is for three home Cal Poly football games so no Sac this season, but more than likely in 2013. It is only a local station, but a South Dakota affiliate station bought the feed of the CP/USD game this season and aired it in South Dakota. Maybe a Sac area station will buy the 2013 game feed and air it in the Sac area.

Interesting. I'm not sure who the main cable provider is on the Central Coast but if its Comcast, my guess would be they would be the leaders to pick up the game. And I don't think that TV deal impacted any Root scheduling as they don't have a CA presence and no doubt have no reason to air games between CA schools in the Pac NW & Mountain areas.

It will be interesting to see what happens if you guys are hosting a Montana school in the 2013 season. Since that contract was in place prior to the Root one, I don’t think they can override it without buying it out.

I was hoping that the WSU ISU game would be broadcast with 300K people in SE Idaho and 2 million in the wasatch front I thought that would have been an attractive TV market.

On the plus side with all the UM games broadcast everyone can watch as the program melts down and they lose 4-5 conference games. Grizz with all the problems and the loss of your coach I think this is going to be a tough year welcome to the bottom.
