Not in WAC terms. This is going to take a while, if it happens at all. I rather suspect that the CAA can survive -- nay, even THRIVE with the loss of a couple of non-strategic schools like ODU.jmufan wrote:The CAA is dying rather quickly.
Until I see the CAA as a permanent one-bid conference, I won't believe this.

ODU and fellow CAA members Delaware and James Madison were approached at the Final Four last month about a possible move to C-USA, a source within the conference said.

Good luck.
Any thoughts on the stadium? I assume this will advance the destruction of the clamshells and addition of two-tiered structures in their place?
So who does the CAA add?
Coastal
Stony Brook
Albany
New Hampshire (olympics)
Maine (olympics)
What about Davidson for olympic sports only?

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
No idea. I had discussions with our VP of Finance a while ago and he said the dollars don't work to add just seats and not include suites. But that was at the FCS ticket pricing. Since they would rather not add suites in the endzone again, I think they will look to the sidelines. What happens from there is anyone's guess.danefan wrote:Good luck.

The ODU AD said yesterday on the air that there are still a lot of things being discussed. The WAC (NM St and Idaho) is talking to the FCS powers on both sides of the country to form an FBS league with east and west divisions.

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
Congrats to ODU assuming its what you want.
As far as NMSU/Idaho making a new conference out of the WAC, that's a longshot but doable.
They would need to add six to have the minimum of 8.
App St
GSU
Jax St
Liberty
Lamar
SHSU
Those have all conducted feasibility studies.
Delaware, NDSU, Montana, and Montana St could get in on the action.
I just don't see it happening.

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
I don't get the ODU eligible for the FCS playoffs still this year thing.
I guess it will come out later today or in the near future. I can't ever remember a FCS team in transition allowed to make the postseason. I would imagine the only way that was possible was if they weren't technically "in transition". However, that would probably only have any positive effect for this season - they'd be operating technically shorthanded next year at the FBS level.
Either way it'll only be for an at-large, they'll be 0-0 in the CAA this year, more TV games for UD now!!!!

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
An NCAA official said that we can participate in the FCS playoffs as long as we do not provide written notice until after June 1. We just made a verbal statement this morning, but the written communication to the NCAA won't happen until after June 1. Obviously, we have to hold at 63 scholarships until after the season. Not sure what the CAA will do with us though. I wonder if it affects the TV contract if we are not an official conference member. Probably not since the schedule will likely be the same, and the game will still count for our opponents.bluehenbillk wrote:I don't get the ODU eligible for the FCS playoffs still this year thing.

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
E-mail I just received:
Dear Colleague,
Over the last few weeks, many of you have read or heard about the changing landscape of college athletic conference membership, including opportunities presented to Old Dominion University.
University administrators have performed considerable due diligence in examining the impact an NCAA football reclassification and conference change could have on the university, overall student body and athletic programs, in particular, ensuring that such a move could be made without an increase in student fees.
Following a detailed briefing to the board, which expressed support, and other constituents, Old Dominion University is pleased to enter into a membership agreement with Conference USA, effective July 1, 2013.
While the university was not actively seeking a change, recent events necessitated an earlier consideration of our future, and in particular, for our football program. C-USA’s invitation provided the right opportunity at the right time to reclassify our football program and broaden the national footprint of our athletic program.
C-USA members include East Carolina, Rice, Tulane Tulsa, Marshall, Florida International, North Texas and Louisiana Tech universities and the universities of North Carolina Charlotte, Southern Mississippi, Alabama at Birmingham, Texas at El Paso, and Texas at San Antonio.
I want to express my appreciation to our Colonial Athletic Association member schools, which over the years provided great competition and lively rivalries. I especially want to thank Commissioner Tom Yeager for his leadership and friendship to both Old Dominion and me personally.
While we will no longer be a member of the CAA after next year, we hope to schedule athletic competitions with many of the league’s member schools and our non-conference schedule will be more regional than in the past.
As we moved through this process, I was encouraged by the wide-spread and broad-based support we received from all constituencies, both within and outside the ODU community, for a possible move to the C-USA. Similar to the enthusiasm we experienced when we started football, we have already received commitments of more than $3 million in private support for the move, and our fundraising will continue through the summer. This philanthropic support enables us to join Conference USA without increasing student fees, which was a critical factor for the board and me.
While many details still need finalization, Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig and his staff will work diligently to ensure that programs whose sports championships fall outside the C-USA footprint will be accommodated and enhanced. We will provide more information in the coming days and weeks on the specifics of that and other elements the move will necessitate.
In closing, I want to thank our coaches and student athletes, whose excellence on the playing field and in the classroom over the years put Old Dominion University in the position to make a move of this magnitude. We have a first-rate athletic program and joining Conference USA makes it possible for our Monarchs to reach even greater heights.
Sincerely,
John R. Broderick
President

Re: ODU to the C-USA???
He was talking about the many different options that were discussed through this process. He only specifically mentioned ECB schools that were targeted by the WAC (ODU, Appy, JMU, UD, Liberty, Towson and Jax St). But he did say that they were looking for up to 6 WCB schools to create a western division. It was a quick comment as he went on to talk about the discussions about a new ECB FBS conference being formed as another option (this was likely the secret meeting I mentioned a couple of weeks ago).AZGrizFan wrote:CAA Flagship wrote:The ODU AD said yesterday on the air that there are still a lot of things being discussed. No surprise. It was pretty clear that ODU didn't really give two shits about CAA football from the beginning. Hope you guys enjoyed your cup of coffee. Seeya! Here's hoping UD goes undefeated against you. We'll miss Razor.
