QB Taylor Heinicke picks up the TSN and CAA Offensive Player of the Week awards.
Old Dominion totaled 723 yards in its 57-23 win over Duquesne, and Heinicke accounted for 530 yards on his own. After trailing 20-10 at halftime, the Monarchs offense exploded for 47 second-half points. Heinicke broke personal and school game-highs with 492 passing yards and 41 completions, helping the Monarchs tie a program mark for points in a game. Last year's runner-up for the Jerry Rice Award ended the game with four touchdown passes and 38 rushing yards.

Definitely an early favorite for the Payton, IMO. It's a shame this is his last season in FCS.

Unless someone goes nuts in tonight's GT/VT game, Heinicke will actually be the national leader in offensive yards after today, FCS or FBS.

On his own, his offensive numbers bested 96 of 106 FCS programs and 89 of 111 FBS programs. The next closest FCS individual (Braden Smith, Campbell) had 378 yds compared to Heinicke's 530, and he played against Shorter, an NAIA school.

ODU is ranked first nationally in yards after week one, FCS or FBS. The next closest FCS program had 653 yards (NDSU against a DII school). The next closest FBS opponent had 682 yards (Oklahoma St. vs FCS Campbell).

Just crazy numbers all around.

2011 DII West Chester 5-6

2011 FCS Duquesne 9-2

Solid reasoning there.

Actually, there are data points for this. The last UD team to play for the FCS Championship played both those teams at home and won by similar scores. West Chester is a good D2 and Duquesne is an absolutely dreadful FCS, so the game would at the very least be a toss up. I'd put my money on WCU because they're a gritty team.

To-do list for trip to Norfolk:
1. Oil change for car.
2. Pack full tailgate kit, including single malt (but no malt liquor).
3. Buy Mace.
4. Check for tickets.
5. Make sure life insurance paid up.
6. Outfit car with fake rimz and fuzzy dice. :check:

ODU will play at Norfolk State next season with NSU returning the game in 2015 (our first season in CUSA).

Just some interesting disciplinary stuff Coach Wilder has implemented:
...ODU players are banned from Twitter, year-around, for as long as they're on the team.

Many other schools make some effort to curb Twitter use. Football coaches at Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina and Boise State, for example, told their players they may no longer tweet during the season. But a sports social media expert said Wilder's year-round ban may be the strictest in Division I football...
http://hamptonroads.com/2012/09/odu-foo ... rictive-us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also a bit late, but:
...Wilder said each player owes him a "gasser," drill for each penalty yard. Each drill is a sprint of 200 yards. For defensive end Alex Arain, flagged with a 15-yard late hit against Hampton, that meant running 15 drills Monday morning.

Wilder said he ran all 15 gassers, about 3,000 yards in all, with Arain and Saylor.

Each sprint took about 45 or 50 seconds..

...Wilder said he told his players Sunday that hitting after the whistle won't be tolerated.

"I made it clear to the players yesterday that's not who we're going to be as a program," he said. "If guys need to be suspended, then that's what I'm going to do.

"I told them, I'm not upset with how hard you play, but when the whistle blows and you don't stop, that bothers me. That's my responsibility, my fault that you don't understand that concept.

"So I said, I need to be punished like you guys."

Saylor has to run 85 gassers this week, Wilder said - 15 each for two personal fouls, five for an offside and 50 for being ejected...

No seriously, I like the guy. No strings attached.

Matthews is really the only doucheknocker in the CAA. Of course, maybe some non-UD fans feel the same way about Keeler.

Gee whiz!! I saw this and thought that I was somehow transferred to VCU SheepNation. Are we now going to have to have "official" threads?

Heinicke's numbers from last night are ridiculous.
21-29 for 486 yards passing and 7 touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown for good measure.
