It is interesting to see the comments. It is clear that people start with a pre-conceived notion that causes them to comment differently than others that are reviewing the exact same data.
This list is simple yet complex to analyze. There are so many factors that contribute to the number of viewers. The network, the time, and the day/date have to be factored in.
Question for shits and giggles:
If I gave you this list without the number of viewers (and rating) how would your predicted ranking be different? (I should have done this from the start. )

You're the "world wide leader in sports" and it's the Div. I championship game. But before we go further down that track I want to see all of the ratings for everything aired on the flagship.
Well it's "labeled" the Division 1 championship game, but every football fan in America knows its not. With the imminent separation coming between the haves & have-nots in FBS the more appropriate label will soon be Division 3.
And there's a decent chance when that happens that the UD's and EWUs of the world will be reunited with the UMASS's and Idaho's in division II

It's probably what I though it would be. But I'm not an EWU fan based on the popularity of our division.

Actually, if you look at the highest rated FCS game on the list, it's the one with ODU, which was probably (and I'm guessing by far) the largest TV market among FCS playoff teams.
Did Villanova move out of the Philadelphia TV market? Yeah, I know they have no following for football (and their first round game wasn't televised), but the Philadelphia market is #4, Norfolk & environs is #43 according to http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Well Villanova got smoked in the 1st round by Stony Brook so they never got a national TV playoff game last fall. But, yes Philly makes Norfolk look like Camden, NJ.

I think given that information my rankings would be fairly close to what's presented. As I said, I can't really relate to or understand why more people would be interested in watching something like Ohio vs. Louisiana Monroe in a low level bowl game more than in watching Sam Houston State play North Dakota State in the FCS championship game...or for that matter Winston Salem State play Valdosta State in the Division II championship game...but I recognize that as the case. Heck, I can't understand why more people (if given the option) would rather watch Ohio vs. Louisiana Monroe than Tallahassee Lincoln play St. Thomas Aquinas in the Florida AAAAAA high school state championship. WHY, if you're not a fan of Louisiana Monroe or Ohio, would you want to watch Louisiana Monroe play Ohio?
On the other hand, to me, there's an obvious reason for wanting to watch a championship game from just about any level. You're watching two teams that have been through the crucible of a playoff fight it out to see who is the last man standing. It's just much more meaningful. Same with a playoff game where the two teams are trying to get to the championship game. There's just something there that isn't there when Ohio and Louisiana Monroe are playing in the Independence Bowl as two of 70 teams that are playing in bowl games.
But one thing I never thought much about before I saw that ranking is the question of whether or not a game being on ESPN2 vs. being on ESPN is a factor. Don't know if its the case because I think they both reach the same number of households. But it could be that all other things being equal a randomly selected viewer is just more likely to be watching ESPN. I don't think it could make that much difference but could make some difference.

It's real simple folks. When Vegas starts setting lines for FCS games, you'll see playoff ratings go up. Gambling drives the ratings for the smaller bowls and enhance them for larger ones.
you people have to realize that its all about where your at... the east coast is big because of the number of people there, we dont have many people in MT but we have nothing else when the cats and griz meet that is the superbowl for a million people because we have nothing else.

You know that's an interesting theory. Makes me think of a guy I work with sometimes. He likes to bet on football games. He's in some kind of pool and every year they include lower division playoff games near the end. And every year he calls me to ask my opinion on who he should take. Then he watches the games if he can. Like he watched the Georgia Southern at ODU playoff game because that was in his pool.
In any case you answered my question as to why anybody outside of the immediate Louisiana Monroe and Ohio fan communities would want to watch Louisiana Monroe play Ohio.

Next bowl season, walk into any sports bar or restaurant with a large number of TVs ... there's bound to be a game on. If it involves teams from out of the particular area your in, go up and ask the folks watching "who you got in this one?" More than likely you'll get a response like, "I've got XYZ Tech -4" or "ABC State +10."
If you have no affiliation with an FCS school, then you wont watch the playoffs. Most who are affiliated with an FCS school probably wont watch. FCS is completely irrelevant to everybody but us.

That's my point...Only 950k watched Ok St vs. Purdue because it was on ESPNU. Had it been on ESPN or ESPN2, I think that number would be quite a bit higher.
The only way to get the number higher would be to put Montana in the game.

That's also true for most of mid-major FBS, though.
SDHornet wrote:What’s missing is the column showing how much money each school lost in said bowl game. My guess is from the Alamo Bowl on down every participating bowl school took a loss.
Also a column for attendance would be nice to see as well. Not only did SJSU take a nice bath on their Military Bowl appearance, but only 17k showed up…but hey 1.9M people tuned in.
what seems to elude fcs fans is that pretty much every fcs team loses money on the playoffs..and opposed to a handful of teams making money with football only a handful of fbs teams lose money.
Look at playoffs attendance anywhere except ndsu, montana, and maybe asu and msu...

A lot more FBS teams lose money than you think. Only a handful actually bring in a profit, and those handful are those are the very echelon of FBS. Those mid and bottom tier bowls are total money losers.

True, but I think mid major alums at least realize that their team is in a bowl game on national tv. Before I went to NAU when I had no clue what FCS was, and I was a pretty big college football fan. And whenever FCS is jokingly brought up on gameday or something, its referred to as D2. Even the sportscasters dont know what it is.

Well, JMU would certainly be up there over 20k attendance if
-made the playoffs
-bothered to bid enough to host a game.....
