As for Orange County, not real sure why the L.A. Rams left Anaheim as they sold out nearly every game. The L.A. Raiders may not have sold out everytime, and Al Davis is a bit of a @sshole. However, football in the L.A. basin is hard to keep.

Back in the early 80's both Cal State Fullerton & Long Beach State had 1-A football programs. They were in a league (PCAA, then Big West, and so on) that was considered the little sister of the Pac-10 (much like the MAC is to the Big 10). Long Beach dropped their football program around 84/85ish. Fullerton soon followed. Both due to low attendance. Both schools are commuter schools. Both schools excel in baseball. Their basketball programs used to be bigger, but have declined some.

Neither school is in OC, but they're both very close. Fullerton boarders Santa Ana (Northern most OC town), while LB is just north-west of Westminster. Both schools are maybe 20 - 30 fwy minutes apart. Great natural rivalries. There's been talk of football maybe coming back to Fullerton, and there's faint hope that if Fullerton is successful in bringing back football, the Long Beach may follow.

Not real sure what conference, if any, they would play in though.

You have;
Cal Poly, UC Davis, & So Utah in the Big West, and
Sacramento St, Northern Az, Portland St. & Weber State in the Big Sky, and
USD in the PFL.
They could play an Indy schedule and with these teams have a 9 game schedule. Add a FBS game, and maybe a warm up game with Azusa Pacific the first couple of years, and they'd be good.

Minnesota is well represented by the FCS as the western part has both North Dakota schools and also South Dakota State. To the east, the Iowa schools do a fine job.

Wyoming, that is funny. Maybe someday when Cheyenne finds the money to fund more than one four year university, then we can find the Wyoming State Oilers and Northern Wyoming University Tumbling Tumbleweeds in the FCS.

My five would be...

1. Vermont---only state in the lower 48 with no DI program
2. Alaska---only other state besides Vermont with no DI program
3. Seattle
4. Las Vegas
5. Phoenix

I thought we heard rumors of Grand Canyon Univ joining DI and wanting in the 'Sky? They be in PHX.

Vermont would be good. Alaska - expensive to travel too.

Other three are metro areas with FBS football. Didn't work in LA, won't work in those three.

All are inaccurate. NO plans to join D-I at this time, no plans to add football for at least 5-10 years.

No problem, facilities are in place in Casper, Sheridan, Powell, Riverton, Torrington, Rock Springs, Gillette, and Cheyenne.
I assume those are Community College locations?

Yes, there would have to be of course, additional construction, but all these facilities are excellent, and this state does have money. The politics however, will not allow any direct competition in the state for UW. And UW is certainly not a big school by any standards.

Another program in the state is a pipe dream, and it is unfortunate for the home grown kids, great for the neighboring states schools.

But Princeton is Central Jersey (land o'commuters). Plus very few people from NJ relate to Princteon U. They have one of the nicest stadium in FCS and they can't even get close to filling it.

Something in South Jersey (Philly burbs) would be good, but it would hurt other northeastern FCS teams recruiting. Albany pulls great talent out of that area.

But I'm not nceessarily sure South Jersey is deprived of FCS football. Rowan is good DIII ball, but to play FCS they'd be in direct competition with Delaware for fans. Rowan to UD=1hr 15 min drive.

Ouch!

My take on this subject. Successful FCS teams, with a handful of exceptions, do not reside in locals that have bigtime FBS programs or the NFL. I dont see how you could put a programs in LA when even the Rams or the Raiders couldn't compete with USC and UCLA.

Agreed, which is why Albany has great potential to become a succesful FCS program (if it can get some more money). 3 hours to the nearest pro football game. 2.5 hours to the nearest FBS game (Syracuse - which is hardly considered a successful program anymore). Located in an area with over 1 million immediate residents. Nothing else really going on during the fall season. A campus of 18,000 students.

Ya I'd like to see Wyoming get a few more programs, I'm surprised they don't because they play some good football that way. I liked to see New Mexico get a FCS program going.

New Mexico already has a FCS program in Las Cruces, they just haven't admitted it. Eastern is a Lone Star Conference whipping boy, and N.M. Highlands, and Western New Mexico are RMAC whipping boys. Not really sure that the University of New Mexico even elevates the status of the game in the state above mumbly peg.

It's not a matter of distance. Its a matter of Princeton being somewhat soverign territory within NJ, completely out of the thoghts and minds of most NJ'ins.

I'd rather drive 2 hrs to Delaware to watch a game than 40 minutes to watch Princeton.
Conceptualisation of distance is different according to where you live. Growing up in NJ It was not something you just did any day of the week. You didn't just decide to go to NYC (90 miles) or Delaware (55 miles) every day, or every week for that matter. It was a planned trip you had to think about doing, in advance.

Being in a large state (Texas, Montana, the Dakotas, etc) it's a totally different mindset. I never think twice about going to a TXST game (50 miles). I just get up and go. I have lived in both places and I may not be describing this in a way that makes sense but it truly is different. So, having an FCS school in southern NJ could fly.

No, I know what you're talking about. When I met up with wideright in NYC, I remember telling him that it takes about 9 hours to drive across MT, and he said something to the effect of "Jesus, if I drive for 9 hours, I end up in South Carolina!".
