He's talking about the 2004 game TD. They really were a bunch of salty dogs out there and had a great game plan against us and took us pretty decisively in that one in the final two quarters.
My bad. So their QB didn't quit on them against Montana that year?

No sir, he did not. He was good, real good but the team wasn't driven primarily by one guy so even if he had a shrunken heart they were gonna be OK. They were a complete team in 2004.

That's another one that I wish had went our way but I was glad to witness such a great game. The guy that ran that fake punt is a friend of mine and if you saw him in a bar out of his pads and shit I wouldn't be able to convince you that he played for the Griz.
AP is a heck of a person too. I love his family and his dad still remembers me. Thanks for the words.

In my mind that game was lost.. I don't remember the first half going as favorably for us as it did. What I do remember is the onslaught delivered by Montana on offense and that brick wall on defense. My gut hurt watching the season get ripped away in chunks. Great adjustments for you guys. I always thought Coach Johnson was the king of adjustments, but Montana had them that day.

Well, yeah this is a D-III game but Ursus said I could to it.

Concordia-Moorhead vs #4 Saint John's Univ. (Sep 20, 2008 at Collegeville, Minn.)
Stadium: Clemens Stadium • Attendance: 12,324

Wasn't much of a drive either. It was the 4th quarter, we were leading 9-6 (all defense that day). We started the drive from our own 3 yard line after recovering a fumble with 2:03 to go. Got a few first downs, then stalled. Went in to punt on 4th and 16 from our own 40 with 0:45 to go. Instead of being smart and sending 2 return men back, Saint John's went with just 1 even after knowing that the previous season I led the conference in punts inside the 20. I was on the left hash facing the student section in the endzone and the return guy was head on with me. So, being that I had some time to think (we were burning the clock), I decided to kick to the right sideline, not caring about hang-time but rather pinning them deep. Cadence went through, got the snap and hit the best ball I've ever had. Turned over like a pass, hit on the 1 yard line and bounced straight right out of bounds.
D. Williamson punt 58 yards to the SJU1, out-of-bounds.
They got the ball with 0:40 left. Threw 2 long passes, both incomplete. Then on 3rd down they had a bust out run for 30 yards. Rushed up, spiked it, and called a timeout. Next play was a short button hook to the left wideout, but was picked off with 0:29 seconds left and they had no timeouts. Game over. The best part was having a fan of ours save the radio broadcast from the SJU announcers and letting me listen to it. This is quoted from the broadcast when I hit that punt. The announcer thought I shanked it right when I hit it.
"Williamson in to punt for Concordia. Good snap...THE BALL WENT OFF THE SIDE OF HIS FOOT...nevermind...perfect punt. Ball at the St. John's 1 yard line. Gotta give the kid credit on that one. Nice job.
Never felt better after that game since we've only beaten them twice in the past 17 seasons.
Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway. - John Wayne

Nice drive. But in the whole history of your program is that really the one? You didn't win the championship that year. Do you really rate that ahead of any other drive your school has had?

Good grief, I just didn't feel like typing it all out, but since your going to praise a kickers tale...

Late in the 1993 season, just coming off a miserable loss in a monsoon at Hofstra and Uncle Buck. We go into Delaware at 5-2, Delaware is also 5-2 and ranked fairly high(I want to say 10 or 11). Both offenses are having their way with the defenses. Delaware scores with 3 minutes left to go up making the score 26-30. We march down the field and end up 4th and goal on the 2yard line with 0:30 seconds left on the clock. We run a power to the right, I as a center just have to block back. The nose guard lays on me, 24K screaming fans go silent as our RB Tony Vinson walks in. I went from the bottom of the pile to jumping in the air celebrating.

Oh yeah, our klcker missed the XP  and Delaware got the ball back with 20 seconds to make us all nervous. They stalled out around midfield, we win 32-30.

We finish 8-2, Delaware 8-3. They make the post season, we don't.

I was the only 5th year Senior on our 1977 squad, the rest of my recruiting class was out of football, and I was enduring a losing season for the first time in my life. Towards the end of the season we had Northern Michigan at our house, their QB was Steve Mariucci and he was a great quarterback for a relatively small guy and they were defending national champions in the College Division.

We had the opportunity to win the game on the final drive, and we were moving the ball well. A dropped pass that would have scored, and a few other events had us on about the 15 or 16 yard line, fourth down and about 5 to go. I was the left OG, and uncovered, there was a tackle over my left tackle and a lb stacked behind him. Call was a quick slant in to the wide out on my side. At the snap of the ball, the lb stunted into my hole and became my responsibility so I engaged him and to my surprise felt him go blasting to my right as my left tackle plowed into the guy as I made contact. Cool, 'cept big Bob did not take the tackle that shot off his outside shoulder and got his hand on the ball as it left our QB's hand. Game over.

I did get to throw the block that sprung our FB for a 20 yard TD at the end of one of the games we won that year, but the N. Michigan game has always haunted me.

Games we lost that year-

Abilene Christian at home (They won the NAIA NC that year)
Colorado State at Ft. Collins- first match up for the two schools in many years, and a record sell out at the time.
Cameron University at Lawton Oklahoma- used to be a great football school, they don't even play anymore.
Cal Poly SLO at SLO- they had a great receiver at the time and a good QB, it was a close game
Northern Michigan at home. Nuff said.
Montana at Missoula- Best game I ever played as a college player, only game my big brother ever saw me play in. We got off to a lead, but ended up losing by about 24 pts. We had beaten them at Greeley the year before.
North Dakota State at home, If I remember right they played Montana State for the College Division NC that year, and the game stayed pretty close to the end, we never led though and it was my last game.

We did beat South Dakota, Central Oklahoma, and Eastern New Mexico that year, but I had been on a team that had only lost five games in the previous three years. I actually wished I had graduated with the rest of my recruiting class.

I do not know how they worked the deal at the time, but they applied for a redshirt because I was ineligible my freshman year. Strange goings on, and I only had heard of one guy at the time that played for five seasons.

I never PLAYED as a true freshman of course, and once school started I did not practice either. They did have "Freshman Football" at the time, with a game schedule and the works. Going into spring quarter and spring ball of course, I had two quarters under my belt and a 3.5 gpa when the track coach came to talk to me about the shot put, when I told him what had happened, he said I was eligible and I could come out for track. Football coach called me in the next day and told me I could go back in and check out my gear and play ball.

Wierd, I know but I got 5 full sets of two-a-days and 4 spring seasons out of it. Spring ball sucks, BTW 8-)

Most memorable single play:

My junior year, 1992, at William and Mary.

First play, counter to my side I'm the RG with a 3tackle. Its a basic play, me and the tackle blow up the 3 and depending on which what he goes one of us slides off and gets the backside LB. Except we blow him up so much he goes into the front side LB behind him and we take him 10 more yards and he lands on his back. As we are getting up I put my hand on his chest and say "Son, you've gotta do better than this" A 15 yards on the first play of the game is a great start.
My RT looked at me and said "Did you just say what I think you did." I just smiled.

"Son you've got to do better than this" is a line Lawrence Taylor said to some QB in the NFL Crunch Course tape. Classic. John always brings it up when we are drinking.

Hey tribe4SF that 3 tackle was a tall thin senior 6'5" and 250-260, white guy, remember him?

W&M's d-line coach called our coach after they played UVa and told him that our o-line was much more physical that UVas. W&M beat us, so it's a bittersweet compliment.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

Great stories Andy. I'll praise anyone that tells a good story (especially from their own personal experience) because you are all guys that we've gotten to know at least through the sites if not personally. It's like sitting around and listening to a friend a tell a good story at the bar about the old days.

It's also a good way to generate some good football talk with a dramatic element from your personal experiences. I loved both your posts and the second one is pretty damn funny.

Didn't think that one would give you guys any trouble. Yep, recruited by ol' Jack, but never played for him. He left UNC for CMR the spring before I reported to camp. Did do a winter conditioning with the team and Jack running the circuit training, thought I'd die. Guys said he was a tough coach.

Hey, bitch. We were 9-2 and 11-2 my junior and senior years. We won all the fvcking time. WTF else can I say? Those two falls were just a blur of touchdowns, pussy, beer, Night Ranger and Scorpions songs and massive bong hits.

:thumb:

Now, D!B has some good stories and, if wasn't so ADHD and hooked on smack, he could sit down and write about them. Among my faves is him violently sacking and injuring a little Youngstown QB in a 1987 UNIDome playoff game, then kneeling beside him and giving him the sign of the cross!

Well as a Spider fan I think there can only be one Drive: last year, FCS Semifinals, at UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, IA. After trialing 20-7 to start the 4th, UR was still down 20-14, and received the ball at their own 38 with 1:44 left and no time outs. 9 plays, 62 yards and 1:30 later, UR had taken the lead 21-20. A few Key Plays:

First and 10 from Richmond 38, 1:44 left -- Eric Ward throws a slant for 7 yards to redshirt freshman Donte Boston, playing because leading receiver Kevin Grayson is out with a groin pull. The completion gets UR moving and confident.
Second and 5 from UNI 45, 54 seconds left -- Ward hits Boston for 11 yards. Ward then spikes the ball, setting up UR at UNI's 34 with 44 seconds left.
Fourth and 2 from UNI 26, 33 seconds left -- Ward passes to fullback Shawn White, who makes his second catch of the season. The play gains 4 yards. White is shaken up. The clock stops for a few minutes at :27. UR's staff has time to plan a final assault.
Second and 1 from UNI 13, 18 seconds left -- Ward passes in the right flat to tight end Joe Stewart, who makes the catch and crosses the goal line at :14.

The UNI-Dome goes quiet and UR moves on to Chattanooga and a championship date with the Griz.
