A win is a win - better than scheduling Wayne State, et al. It also keeps the money in the state.
Playing at Drake is no problem. Its another way to get the DSM alums hooked.
Unfortunately, not many OVC teams want to play UNI, regardless of the location. The options start to get pretty thin based solely on geography.

Re: Congratulations to Dayton and Jacksonville
Word on the street is that Dayton will be playing a traditional FCS team or two in the near future. I think we have one next year and one the year after that, (2011 and 2012). Not sure on the terms but I have always been proud of my Flyers for not playing money games. Home and home is reasonable with ANY team in FCS.
Re: Congratulations to Dayton and Jacksonville
With attendance averaging less than 4k/game you ARE NOT going to get a lot of MVC or CAA willing to home-home.DetroitFlyer wrote:Word on the street is that Dayton will be playing a traditional FCS team or two in the near future. How the fuck is it reasonable with the lack of notoriety of Dayton? THE ONLY reason a team like MT, UNI, App, Delaware, or any team that makes any kind of money on a home OOC game would play a team like that in a H&H is if they were either given a good payback or could charge extra for the home game they got out of it.DetroitFlyer wrote:Word on the street is that Dayton will be playing a traditional FCS team or two in the near future. There is no way having Dayton or ANY other PFL team come in could garner anything other than lowest ticket price offered in that season.
Now with that being said you are looking at other low drawing attendance teams in tougher conferences and you will be taking a spot that most of those teams reserve for a $300-400K payday. That ain't happening either.
You guys vastly overvalue yourselves in the grand scheme of things and the PFL teams have the onus on them to have a better resume so that leaves the ball squarely in your court. They just aren't willing to take a swing at it.

Ursus: How do Dayton and others like them get a better schedule if nobody will play them? This is the same issue Boise is dealing with. The "Big Boys" duck the "Little Boys" and then hold the "Little Boys" responsible for the lack of SOS. Self-fulfilling prophecy and the height of bogus elitism.

You have to hit the road and play those teams, nobody's gonna travel to you if they can do better playing at home. I know you like to talk about old school stuff, so here's an example: look at Florida State's schedules in the early 80's mostly road games at tough schools. And before you say anything about that being I-A, they system they used for awarding titles was much worse than the BC$.Ursus: How do Dayton and others like them get a better schedule if nobody will play them? You ask the same question again that I others have been giving the answer too? You ain't gonna get a H&H but you can get the games if you want them. That's how this IS NOT like BSU at all. BSU was willing to go anywhere and play on the road but even then the big boys wouldn't schedule them.
The "big boys" on this level would have no problem scheduling teams like Dayton if they were willing to give up their pride and hit the road cuz the "big boys" aren't willing to give up the money they would have to in order to make the H&H that Dayton seems to want.
Do you get it now? JC SH I don't get what is so hard to understand here?

There are a number of OVC & MVFC (and probably others) within 4-6 hour bus ride of Dayton. That would cut down on the costs, but Dayton would probably need to start off with a 2-1 or 3-2 type of arrangement.
Otherwise, enjoy Black Friday.

I disagree, 89. a team that was eliminated from the playoffs two games ago beat Virginia Tech, the Big South took two games away from the MAC, a three-loss MVC team beat a Big XII (albeit a bad one), a lower-level great west team beats San Jose State, a bad FCS indy beats a Big 10 doormat, and UMass goes down to the wire with Michigan.89Hen wrote:Bottom line is neither team deserves a bid on their perfomance, but if it were to ever happen, this would be the year. I-AA as a whole is down this year and the committee is going to have an awfully hard time finding the final at-large teams.
Also, the reason there will be more 7-4 teams than ever this year is not because of the two extra AL bids, but because the SoCon, MVC, CAA, and Big Sky are all more balanced than they have been lately.
And jelly, what does it matter how close it was in the third quarter? If the game was close at the end I might say they're legitimate but the game is four quarters. Chatty ran App. State off the field for the first three quarters but that doesn't mean they are that much better than App. does it?
Don't be surprised to see a 4 loss team go deep in the playoffs this year. It's just been that kind of year.

And, I would much rather see them in the playoffs over yet another 4 loss team. The playoffs are supposed to find the best team in FCS football. Jacksonville hasn't proved one way or another whether they belong in that group or not. The playoffs are a perfect setting for them to prove it.
Teams that have lost FOUR games have already proven they're NOT. Why waste at large spots on them?

For sure.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote: Depends on the team I suppose. There would be a whole lot less 4 loss teams if they had played Jacksonville's schedule.
I haven't seen anything to convince me Jacksonville would be any better than a mediocre team in any of the power conferences. They're unproven. Because of their schedule... we don't know.
The bubble teams with 4 losses have already proven they're a mediocre team in a power conference. Why should they go to the playoffs?
The playoffs aren't bowl games... you don't get invited as an award for a good season. The playoffs are supposed to determine who the best team in the country is. Period. We know 4 loss teams aren't. We don't know whether Jacksonville is. Jacksonville has more reason to be in the playoffs.

It's a good argument stance but I'm not so sure. If let's say 5 other teams could be where they are right now playing that schedule then we still don't have any idea.Skjellyfetti wrote:For sure.Ursus A. You've seen em' so I defer to you for that fact, but if they were in the SoCon this year, based on what you know of them would they have beat Chattanooga or Georgia Southern or Wofford or Furman? I'm just asking your opinion and what you speculate they would have done? Do you think they would have 4 losses based on what you've seen from those teams this year?

Got no opinion on it even though I asked what you think just for the discussion huh?Skjellyfetti wrote:Why speculate about it? Put them in the playoffs and we'll find out.

The reason is because they want the best teams in the playoffs. I saw some of the Jacksonville/Drake game I think it was. I was pretty underwhelmed but was just trying to find out your perspective on it. I watched Drake against MSU also and wasn't overwhelmed by Drake in that game. I know Drake shouldn't be in. I'm pretty sure I'd have to go with Chattanooga as a better team if it came down to it.
You just want to state an end case then I'm fine with that. I just wondered your opinion on who you thought was the better team but you don't want to make that move I guess.
So be it.

No...I am not letting Dayton off the hook; Dayton pulled the same bullshit with Albany years ago. It's either only home for them...or a home and home.
Life isn't fair...and teams in the NEC, Coastal when they were Indy, Jacksonville this year, etc. have had to suck it up and play on the road to get games.
You just go out and do it and STFU and allow the results to speak for themselves. Why? Because we went out on the road and became battle tested. You ask me-- it has been nothing short of a 100% success playing teams anywhere anytime. It worked for Gonzaga in hoops...Fresno and Boise in football...etc.
Dayton needs to stop scheduling Central State and Urbana...and get on it and schedule anyone at any field. You build national respect by doing so, irrespective of whether it's fair.

I know that UNI is looking for a way to get a 6th home game most years rather than playing 5 home games and 6 road games like this season.
If Datyon really wants to play someone tell them to get a hold of the following person at UNI. I'm sure he would be glad to set something up:
Troy A Dannen
Director, Athletics Administration

DOME 262 NORTH 0310

Dayton doesn't really want to play the big boys so they throw out a ridicilious home and home offer. They know damm well App State or Northern Iowa will not do a home and home and they won't have to play them. Dayton can then go around crying that they can't get the games etc.Dane96 wrote:Again...who the "F" refuses to play them.SuperHornet wrote:Ursus: How do Dayton and others like them get a better schedule if nobody will play them? Lafayette is playing NDSU next year in a one year deal at the Fargodome. Lafayette almost always gets home and homes, but we decided it was worth no return trip to play the Bison. Dayton needs to do the same thing if they want to be taken seriously.

I would be UNI woul dbe willing to set up a 2 or 3 for 1 with Dayton. More than likely a 3 for 1 but it can be done.
