I appreciate that you have a sense of humor but what is the aim of this Conference? To have a couple teams do well enough to get an Sun Belt or MAC or Conf USA invite 20 years down the road?

Isn't that exactly where the schools are at present time anyway?

At least under the current arrangement, the athletics departments at these schools don't have to carry another 3 women's sports for Title 9 balance. Also, you can currently win a National Championship rather than a Southside Virginia Peanut Growers Association Bowl Trophy.

Also, what makes this deal appealing for Marshall?
Actually, I don't really care about FBS. I'd be happy if ODU stayed in the FCS my whole lifetime. As long as our fans are satisfied with what we have, then I don't care if the FBS is "big time" or whatever. In the end, FCS National Championship, BCS Championship, or Little Caesar Bowl...it's all the same. They're all just games and insignificant in the grand scheme of life, and the conference I presented is only to entertain a thought that some were suggesting about a bunch of FCS schools moving up together.

As for Marshall, I think the conference would cut down significantly on their costs and would be an upgrade in basketball because let's face it, other than Memphis, CUSA is not that much better than high mid-majors. Western Kentucky, Marshall, Charlotte, ODU, GMU, and VCU would make a pretty good bball conference...better than what CUSA or the CAA offers.
I think a move regardless is inevitable for ODU ever since that consulting firm came in and said financially we can't stay in the CAA for very longer.

As for a bball conference with WKU, Marshall, Charlotte, ODU, Mason, VCU...that would be a GREAT basketball conference. :thumb:

The firm said we should expand Foreman Field and prepare for the changes happening in conferences around the country, but it didn't say that it's not financially viable to stay in CAA for much longer:
While the report indicated that the Colonial Athletic Association is now the best fit for ODU, it also warns school officials to prepare for a "changing landscape." Just recently, two CAA schools dropped football, shaking up the division alignment for 2010 and beyond.

But yeah, I also believe we'll end up in the FBS eventually. Still, I think it's a decade or more away (not that I have anything to base that off).

I agree, with the addition of football and only going into our 3rd season I dont see a move to the FBS in the near future unless something drastic happens. Heck, didn't Wilder said he's going to wait 5 years from the point we join the CAA (this season) to schedule FBS opponents?

I hope we never have to play an FBS team as an FCS program (personally I don't see the point unless you need cash), but yeah, I do have a faint recollection of him saying something like that somewhere. Mission #1 though is to win that wood and gold trophy. I have no doubts we will. :thumb:

I dont want to see us get to that point where we need to schedule an FBS opponent every year but I certainly wouldn't mind it if we play FBS opponents every once in a while. I'd like to see us eventually play Tech and UVA, maybe ECU. We actually have connections with UVA as you already know. I'd also love to see us play Tech, nothing would be greater then to see us beat them in football...we already own them in basketball to the point where they're scared to schedule us.

ESPN: Not The Only Game In Town

FBS Schools in NFL Markets have difficulty selling tickets.

App State may have better success at FBS than UNCC afterall

Thanks for posting this article ODUalum11. Sounds like they are doing a nice job although I'm surprised at the small number of seat licenses they have sold. I've always been a fan of the University of Charlotte.

I just don't understand why they are resistant to leave the A-10 for basketball where they haven't won or been competitive since Moby Dick was a minnow. They would be a great addition to the CAA in all sports.

No problem MH. It sounds like they've been doing a great job building their program except for the fact that they made it publicly known that they have FBS aspirations.

It was a very good article but a few things were wrong.

FSL prices are from $1000 to $2500 per seat, not $250 to $1500.

If Judy's been pro-football since the early 90's she's hid it well till 2 years ago.

Is it because they are in big markets (Charlotte and Atlanta) that UNCC and GSU got so much national publicity for starting their football programs? ODU never got this much media attention...

I think with GSU, it was because of the connections Coach Curry had. With Charlotte, probably more the market.

It's ok though, ODU handled the whole process correctly from the start. The other two...not so much. In the end, for all the little national exposure ODU had, I'm pretty sure our fanbase is the strongest and healthiest in terms of numbers and donations. And lets face it, national exposure is nice but doesn't really matter other than for bragging rights. The local exposure is where the true key to success lies, and from what I've seen, ODU has hit it out of the ball park in terms of local exposure...much more so than GSU and UNCC did at the same point.

I mean come on, we're ODU. We invented the modern blue print into how to build a football program. :coffee:

I think part of is has to do with ESPN running a series of articles about college teams in pro markets.

That's true, out of the 3 schools (ODU, GSU, and UNCC) ODU definitely seems like they have the most local support. Can't count the amount of times I go over to read the message boards at panthertalk.com and read about the complaints they have about attendance. But then again they are in another market with pro teams such as the Atlanta Falcons and other big time college programs such as Georgia Tech and Georgia.

Where is the University of Charlotte?

I kid, I kid...I think they really need to push to get the UNC system to approve a name change to the University of Charlotte...the UNCC name (a "slave name" as referred to by 49R) is something that many UNCC students and alums hate. I personally don't care as I have little personal connection to the school, but I definitely think it would be to their benefit. :thumb:

You guys aren't playing football for another 2 years, won't be competing for a championship for at least another 4, and you don't have any news to report about conferences, at present. Best of luck with the new build, but how long can we expect to have to deal with the blanket propaganda campaign to keep Charlotte at the fore of FCS's attention?

If I was being buried in a dirt patch in Charlotte, it'd at least be some activity on that stupid webcam. This thread was dead on Friday morning. I'm not the messageboard police, but for chrissakes, give it a rest already.

If you had started a whole new thread I would have avoided it (like many of the threads on here), like I did your rehash of this webcam site on the CAAZone and AGS sites as well (and probably a half dozen others too). But thanks for spreading the word. The title of this thread mentions the CAA, which Charlotte isn't actually a part of, so a new thread would have been more accurate.

I get it. You're excited about Charlotte football. Just try to keep it in your pants for the next couple years. And be sure to get back to us when you know your AD is back on the rag for the month.
