The way I look at it (my reasoning can always be questioned as convoluted), even going 2-2 for Sept puts the Griz in a position of having to win out since Western Oregon would not be a qualifier. Even with a 20-team playoff going 7-3 would not guarantee a slot.

But if you win 'em all you won't have to worry about that :D

Actually, there's a very plausible way for the Griz to go 2-2 in September and still make the playoffs (even losing a conference game later in the year)--make sure the two losses are to Tennessee and Cal Poly, then win the conference with a 7-1 conference record.
