App vs. Chatty
Re: App vs. Chatty
I'm willing to give the secondary a bit of a pass in this one. New defensive coordinator, new secondary coach, new scheme being implemented against against one of the best passing attacks in the SoCon and a coach who knows how to get it done. The good news is the defensive staff made the corrections and righted the ship. The predictable first game play calling in the first 2 3/4 quarters was little more than a snooze fest. Almost a carbon copy of last year at ECU. After the coaches were forced to pulled the reins off Pressley and the offense our athletes made plays all over the field. Although I did think the brain freeze of running 3 straight running plays in between the guards after the fumble recovery with 4 minutes remaining - vintage Jerry Moore playing safe and attempting to run time off the clock - was going to cost us the game. At the end of the day the game proved to me this team is LOADED. Sorry to have tobreak the news to all you naysayers out there, but it appears a sleeping giant has been awakened from its slumber. If this team plays to its potential the Apps will be 10-0 heading to the Swamp.

Good deal DD. I still stand by my post as well. Judging a team by their first game is not the most prudent way to draw a conclusion, but do what you must. However, I will say there's not much to stand on with so many "ifs" in your scenario. As I said, you may ultimately be proven right, but for now it's all talk until a SoCon team beats ASU.death dealer wrote:I will stand by my first two posts. If the Mountainqueers pull it together then they will be fine, and sill win the conference, which I'm sure the coaches will be able to do. But if they bring that same level of play to the rest of the season, they will lose to Elon, Wofford, possibly Furman and Samford, maybe even GSU is they can get their offense firing on all cylinders. You might be able to pull that victory out of your asses against a team that imploded the way Chatty did yesterday, but you can't count on any of the other teams in the conference to fold in the fourth and give you the win. I hope your defensive secondary is as bad as they looked yesterday. But, I won't hold my breath. We'll see soon enough. I still see FU at 8-3 at the end of the season. I'd say 9-2 if we got lucky against either Elon or you guys, but the way Chatty played yesterday, I think we have a lot more to worry about than ya'll and Elon. That's a shitload of luck we'll need, and with Lamb at the helm we're already using up a big chunk of it every game. Like I said, it should be an exciting year. Let's play some games and see how it all shakes out, shall we?
BTW, if ASU is the "Mountainqueers" what does it say about your Furple Vurman boys that hasn't been able to beat ASU since 2005?

It's like you said, it's all just talk until the game is played. And many a game has been won by the lesser team. Such are the vagaries of the game. As has been said many times before, that's why they play the game, and not just talk about it. Hell, we still have to get past Colgate next week. One game at a time.ASUMountaineer wrote:Good deal DD. Pretty much all of thisOL FU wrote:If Chat can put together 4 qtrs of play like their first two quarters yesterday, they will be around until the end of the season.
If ASU can put together 4 qtrs like their last qtr, they won't lose.
On the other hand, the first half may have been the worse I have seen an ASU team. I think first game rustiness.
Chattanooga imploded. Part of that is what another poster said the difference between a team that expects to win and one that is still learning.
Nothing in that game changed my opinion of the Socon. ASU still on top, Chattanooga probably still in the middle but it is a much stronger middle than we have seen in the past.
PS, Pwns, you beat arguably the worst team in FCS by a lot. Something that about 80% of all FCS teams could do. You may be right in your statement but remember just how bad Savannah st is and has been.
What it comes down to (my own ranking of Road Difficulty):
1) Furman is @Wofford, @Samford, @Appalachian, @Elon
2) Wofford is @The Real GSU, @Elon, @Samford, @Appalachian
3) The Citadel is @Furman, @Appalachian, @Wofford, @Samford
4) Elon is @The Real GSU, @Appalachian, @Chattanooga
5) Samford is @Elon, @The Real GSU, @Chattanooga
6) Western Carolina is @Wofford, @Furman, @Elon
7) Chattanooga is @Furman, @Wofford
8) The Real GSU is @Chattanooga, @Furman
9) Appalachian is @Chattanooga, @Samford, @The Real GSU
Furman has the toughest 'road' to hoe. Appalachian was an easy pick because they survived in Chattanooga (as they hopefully will against Samford in 2 weeks). The final two months of the season in the SoCon they only go on the road once to Statesboro (Oh! The Horror ... )
Though I think Appalachian has the easiest Road I think they have a tough 'Close' ... @Western Carolina, Furman, @The Real GSU, Wofford.
Furman closes @Appalachian, Western Carolina, @Elon, The Real GSU.
Chattanooga goes @Furman, Elon, Samford, @Wofford (with a trip to Auburn sandwiched in the middle).
Elon closes @Chattanooga, @The Citadel, Furman, Western Carolina

Our defense has started the season (for whatever reason) poorly the past 3 years. They've pulled it together and we haven't lost a conference game. It's certainly a question mark, but I have confidence we'll be able to again.death dealer wrote:I will stand by my first two posts. Also, all off season people talked about how we would be screwed without Armanti (even some comments to that effect in this thread).
22-29 340 yards, 2 TD's passing
SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, Sports Network National Offensive Player of the Week, College Sporting News National Offensive Player of the Week
I think we're in good hands. You can't play much better than that.

Appalachian is loaded at the skill positions with an experienced (but thin) OL. We can replace AE's big-play production (gotta love Radford ripping one off for 50yds at a critical point in the game ) but not his leadership - some one(s) have to step up. DP could be Da Man. It would be great to see the OL have a big season - they look primed to do so - and if we can keep them major-injury free we can fatten up on redshirt some of those big hulky Freshmeats we gots.
Not sure what to think about the D. They're working in some new guys - losing Tanyi could be a big problem - but we got a great mix of guys that need to get used to playing together and game experience is only going to help.
Appalachian may stumble a time or two along the way but they've got a really great roster. I wouldn't want to play us, that's fer sure
And I think Chattanooga is the real (but thin) deal. If they would have made that 2-pt conversion we would be commiserating like Whee Fans this week. It's going to get tougher to handle the Mocs as they season goes on ...

We beat y'all last year too, YT. No need to live off victories from 2 years ago when we had as good of a season as Wofford has EVER had only last year.

Interesting tidbit from App's game notes this week.
It went above the post (was a heck of a kick and would have been good from 65) and looked good on TV. UTC's FG early in the game went the exact same route and was called good.On the field, Vitaris may have caught an unlucky break in last Saturday’s opener at Chattanooga, as video evidence appears to show that his second-quarter field-goal attempt from 49 yards out — which would have matched a career long — sailed inside the upright despite being called no good by the officials.
