Sounds to me like what you meant to say was that you have doubts UND will be accepted for NCAA Division I membership. Of course, they already are in the NCAA.

We'll see what happens next year. The main question is whether they comply with Division I membership standards. The NCAA was clear--it does not have the authority to ban "hostile or abusive" mascots from schools, except during NCAA-sponsored championship events. Emblems considered "hostile or abusive" cannot be on uniforms or visible in arenas during NCAA-sponsored championship events. It is not a membership criteria. And of course conferences and individual schools can decide the same thing for them, meaning the Summit can decide that "hostile and abusive" emblems cannot be warn or displayed during Summit-sponsored events and individual schools can decide that they will not play another school that uses "hostile and abusive" emblems.

Fresno State Alum, I would not go so far as to bet whether UND completes the transition next year. There could be other reasons why they might not. But, unless the rules change before then, it won't be because of "hostile and abusive" emblems.

As for renewed lawsuits, if the NCAA does decide to block UND's acceptance into Division I based solely on this issue, I do believe another lawsuit would be filed--and one much stronger than the previous. It is a far different thing to rule that the NCAA was right to ban things from NCAA-sponsored championships than for the NCAA to disregard its own membership rules that it has favorably evaluated UND on several times all after the imposition of the "hostile and abusive" rule.
I stand by what I said. UND is D-I provisional and will be full D-I. If NJIT, Savannah St., UVU, USC-Upstate, Longwood etc... were accepted UND who's got a conf. invite already will be a full member in 2012.

Which begs the question, if UND were to change their nickname to "Fighting Dakotas" and get rid of Native American symbols, would that change anything? If it does, it would be ironic, because "Sioux" is a French term for a group of tribes whose name was anglicized into "Dakota." Given that Illini is ok for Illinois, then would Dakotan be ok for North Dakota?

I happen to like either Buffalo Hunter (emphasizing the NDSU rivalry) or the Metis. The Metis were a group descended from French trappers and Native American women. They were generally considered "white" in the US census, but in Canada, they are one of the "First Nations." For decades, a large Metis colony was in the Grand Forks area and they used to conduct buffalo raids to the south and west. It is part of the history of the Grand Forks area, the US federal government considered them white (and apparently that is ok with the NCAA with Irish, Scots, Orangemen, Vikings, Spartans, Trojans, Kings, Knights, Dukes, Cowboys, etc. all being acceptable), and they were dangerous enemies of the bison on the plains.

That's a laugh. SMU remained a member of the NCAA even while their football team was under the death penalty.

Alcorn St. Braves and Bradley Braves are D-I members, but when I bring it up, you pass over it. Take me up on the the bet or stop rambling about UND not being allowed in D-I. July 1 2012 will be your last day here if you do. :coffee:

Hey BisonMav, havent seen you around for a while, maybe the old D2.com days! What do you think about UNO, D1, the Summit league and the MVFC?

I dont know how Alcorn or anybody else has reconciled their situation with the NCAA. I do know the Aztecs of San Diego State are OK because it was determined there are no Aztecs to offend. Braves might be ambiguous? I do know this: UND is not in compliance with the ruling by the NCAA. I do believe there will be repercussions if it isnt resolved according to the lawsuit that UND brought against the NCAA a year or so ago.

I will not bet. Gambling is illegal. You should be aware of that.

I'll also bet you that gambling IS legal. I gamble in CA and in NV a lot. Plus this bet doesn't include money thus making it legal all over the USA. Much like the Mayor of Green Bay had with the Mayor of Pitt.

I've seen you on many boards I know you think they'll be D-I, you're not dumb. You just hate them.

I'm just fine, I don't have a dog in the fight. That's why I'm saying UND not coming to D-I is just your hate. If I had to choose who I like better I'd go with NDSU since they look more like the Green Bay Packers.

I was talking about UNO until you went off on UND for some reason.

I said how UNO is sitting pretty in that they can talk to the Summit/MVFC to see if they'll take them or them and UND to get to 12 for fb. They could also talk to the Big Sky if MVFC isn't an option. I'm sure the BSC would want them and would help out being 14/12 instead of 13/11. UNO is one of the best D-II programs in terms of being ready and willing to move to D-I.

I dont disagree with you, but I do think if they dont resolve this naming issue to the satisfaction of the NCAA they are going to have some trouble with them and probably the BSC.

Another question that all of us have overlooked. You guys are saying the state of N.Dakota isn't allowing the change right? Then it's kinda out of the UND's hands. So if the NCAA wants to bitch, they need to hit up the politicians in ND to settle things and not UND which had agreed to retire the name.

Thats a huge issue in North Dakota. In my opinion the state is being used as a straw man for UND as they sit back and act innocent. We are trying to comply they say but the state is interfering. It could come down to a constitutional issue in North Dakota. Their selfishness is unbelievable. It might be more impressive than their hate list.

a rare moment where i agree with JBB.

this would be a classic UND tactic. hell, the legislators who pushed the bill were almost certainly egged on by UND boosters and alums as a late gambit/end run to try and get out of this...

I'd be stoked if a school's nickname was the Italians, it would be my favorite school. Or #3 behind Fresno St. & Nebraska. I heard Peta is offended by NDSU being called the Bison. They are working with the NCAA to rid all schools with animal names. Tell me your school wouldn't be pissed if that happened. Plus the Ralph has the Indian logo all over it. Changing everything at the school w/ indian or the name sioux would cost a lot. The JUCO here changed from Kings River CC to Reedley College 12 years ago or so. It cost 60K to change that and all they had to do was change letterhead, a gym floor and block letters in front of the school along with all sports unis and school gear. I think the cost of all the fixes for UND has the school and state pissed in these down times.

1. the ND economy isn't nearly as bad as the rest of the country

2. the fixes to the ralph wouldn't amount to that much. they wouldn't have to change the architecture of the building (where there are logos everywhere) but they would have to take out elements that refer to it that were non-architectual

I'm surprised UND hasn't come out with anything saying what the total cost will be for all the changes.
