Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
For me it was the 07 game against Montana. We took the lead late in the game, then somehow the Griz convert a 4th and long with an amazing catch (I think it was Bagley), and kick a game winning field goal. The SHSU home game was tough too considering the absolute meltdown and remarkably awful officiating.
I don't feel too bad for Hen fans, though. We had to listen to their snarky commentary all week in Dallas. The day after the game, we pile into the rental car shuttle with a bunch of Hen fans. They were still shellshocked but couldn't concede they were beaten. Incompetent officiating, poor offensive play calling, a letup on defense, whatever. They lost, but clearly Eastern hadn't beaten them. What made most of the Hen fans we ran into even sadder, was that all of them looked older than Joe Biden but acted like spoiled brats. Good Lord, you'd think living that long would give you some perspective.

Great catch by Bagley. I just remembered the other biggest letdown. 2001. Again against the Griz. We came back to tie the game then lost on a great catch by Molden in overtime. Has there been a better series in the Sky over the last decade? How big will September 17 be in Missoula! I can't wait.
Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
Don't forget the 2004 game where the Griz blocked a fg in the final seconds that would have tied the game. Besides the butt whoopin' EWU put on 'em in 2005 and the one they put on us in 2008, every game has been down to the wire. Great series.blazerbird wrote:Great catch by Bagley. Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
Don't forget when we lost to the Griz in 1986 when Tracy Poffenroth caught the game-winning TD pass and ran through the back of the endzone placing not one, not two, but three feet clearly in bounds only to be ruled out of bounds in what to this day might be the single worst call ever made in a college football game. I remember two decades later old school Griz fans were still admitting "OK, yeah, we cheated to win that one."

Actually, I thought you were thinking of 2006 when you said 2008. '08 wasn't really a lopsided game as it was just 10-3 entering the fourth quarter.EWURanger wrote:Sorry, I meant to say since 2004 or so, although I did forget about the 2006 game.

True. Neither were as painful as the '07 or '09 games.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Actually, I thought you were thinking of 2006 when you said 2008. Thanks for including this one. This play gets completely overshadowed by The Fumble. The playcall and catch were unbelievably good.T-Dog wrote:

You had to feel for Matt Nichols on both of those close losses in Missoula. He absolutely tore up WGS each year and against two very solid defenses. He was perhaps the greatest QB in eagle history but when it was all said and done went 0-4 against the Griz.blazerbird wrote:For me it was the 07 game against Montana. Fumble vs Appy on the 3 down 1 or whatever it was that handed them a trip to Chatty on a golden platter...geez, we gift wrapped NC two or was it three in a row?

That one hurt us in a way as well, as I was told from a fairly reliable source that we had outbid JMU and would have hosted you guys in Cheney.JMUpurplehazed wrote:Fumble vs Appy on the 3 down 1 or whatever it was that handed them a trip to Chatty on a golden platter...geez, we gift wrapped NC two or was it three in a row?

Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
Two games come to mind...
2008 vs Presbyterian: Liberty had only one loss all year and that was to Lafayette (in Lynchburg, first team to win in Williams Stadium since 06 at the time...only JMU has won there since), Presbyterian had been blown out by Gardner-Webb on the road the week before, and been absolutely crushed in Lynchburg the previous season. The flames had won 7 of 8 games and probably had a very good chance at an at-large if they won out. Presbyterian pulls off the upset in Clinton 31-28. Flames fans are still bitter about that one (even though Liberty destroyed the Blue Hose the very next season)
2009 vs Stony Brook. Basically the de facto championship game...Liberty wins, they have a chance at an at large again. After taking the lead late in the fourth, the Flames defense allows a pair of passes to Jordan Gush, one to about the 10 yard line and the other for the game winning TD with about 30 seconds to go...Liberty and Stony Brook share the Big South title...Flames miss the playoffs...again.
I am sure kd could rattle off a few others for VMI but the 2003 game at Liberty has to go down among their top 5 letdowns...up 28-3 at halftime, allow 4 fourth quarter TDs and Liberty wins 31-28...Keydets go .500 the rest of the way after starting the year 3-2...to my knowledge they havent had a winning season since

Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
You could tell just from talking to him last year at the Griz game that he really wanted to be on the field and get the job done. We probably would have won by a couple scores had he been playing.kalm wrote:You had to feel for Matt Nichols on both of those close losses in Missoula. As a fellow member of the "We Beat Delaware in the National Championship Game" club, even if you beat them by 4 touchdowns, they would still whine. Those damn MEAC refs screwed them!blazerbird wrote: I don't feel too bad for Hen fans, though. We had to listen to their snarky commentary all week in Dallas. Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
Show me one Delaware fan who has ever said that they would've beaten Appy St if it hadn't been for the refs. You're going to have trouble doing that since I'm not sure I've heard a UD fan claim the refs where the only thing keeping them from winning that game. You're basically whining about non-existent whining. Talking smack about MEAC refs is fun - you're confusing it with something else.T-Dog wrote:As a fellow member of the "We Beat Delaware in the National Championship Game" club, even if you beat them by 4 touchdowns, they would still whine. Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
I'm going to disagree with my buddy YC, because UNI II for me stung much worse than #3. UNH was ahead when that off the helmet juggling catch was made with seven seconds left. In #3 we weren't leading and the drive to go ahead failed before we got into range to attempt a game winning FG. Or maybe I had just developed thicker skin by then. Don't get me wrong, UNH III stung too!! And I had a drive from Waterloo back to CT to rehash all the details!!clenz wrote:yorkcountyUNHfan wrote:UNI, UNI, and UNI

Agreed with UNI I for sure! I will go to my grave seeing that perfect pitch out on an option play late in the 4th Quarter on 4th and 2 being fumbled when either myself or Yorkie could have made the first down (and we're really old, especially me) and the UNH player probably would have gone for ten or more yards, maybe even a TD, because there was so much wide open field ahead of him. Clinically depressed for days after that game. Even more so a week later when the 16-18" snow storm hit Durham just before the game with Texas State would have been played. I like our chances to get to Chatty if that game had been played. IIRC Texas State hadn't played in under 50 degrees all year and the game would have been played in under 30 weather for sure.
Honorable mention for UNH: Fumbling in OT against App State to lose in the 1994 playoffs. Also, missing a PAT and losing at eventual champion Montana State 17-16 in the 1976 D-II Quarterfinals.
