I don't think people understand how sparsely populated ND is. There are 650,000 in the whole state. It's roughly the same number of people that live in Austin proper but in a state that's 2x as big as Indiana. Getting 18,000 to a Bison game and 10,000 to a Sioux football game, and 12,000 to a Sioux hockey game all on the easternmost edge of the state isn't too shabby.
Majority of the actual ND residents live in the East, and MN is heavily populated. You forget that Fargo is closer to Minneapolis than most of the Cities in ND so lots of fans come from MN. I would bet that 40% are from MN.

Yep, the majority of the population on ND is in the RRV. I'm not sure I'd say that the part of MN that NDSU and UND would draw from would be considered heavily populated. The towns in western MN and more specifically northwest MN are pretty tiny. Crookston and DL aren't exactly metro areas. MN's population is concentrated in the south, south east and a smaller pocket up in northeast by Duluth. Those areas might have some Bison fans, but they are mostly ND ex-pats and alumni (which isn't a small number) living in the Twin Cities. MN is a hockey state. MN hockey fans HATE with a passion UND and by association, they hate any college with ND in the name. :D

My point is, the area that NDSU and UND have to draw from to find their 18k, 10k, and 12k is much larger than MANY of the other FCS schools (the Fargo Dome is the 5th or 6th largest city in ND on Saturdays). Montana drawing 25k and MSU 14k is pretty awesome too considering how massive Montana is with a relatively small population.

(I thought ND should have made a bid to build the new Vikings stadium in Fargo with that $1-2 Billion surplus you all had a year or 2 ago. $1 billion for the stadium and another for a rail to shuttle them from Minneapolis.)

10-15 years from now it may shift to the west. Williston has doubled in population and with the oil boom Minot and Bismarck may surpass Fargo as the largest city in ND with over 100,000 people.

I doubt we will see those towns grow that much. As the area gets drilled out and there is a shift from the exploration phase to the production phase, the requirement for such huge amounts of labor decrease. There was a study from the University of Minnesota that discussed this and estimated that production only takes about 1/8 of the manpower as does exploration. That being said, I would suspect exploration could be on going for the next 8-10 years if crude prices stay high.

Minot will NEVER be over 100K in our lifetime, they are NOT in the Bakken oil just some corporations have offices there for logistic reasons, Bismarck the same. Williston and Dickinson are the only "Big" towns in the middle of the oil. In order for Minot to Surpass Fargo in Size they would need to grow by 60,041 people based on 2011 numbers, and to surpass the combo of Fargo and WF it would be over 86,000 thats just dumb to think any growth like that would take place in 10 years, Bismarck and Mandan would need to grow by over 52,000 to surpass Fargo. These are only based on city population and not the MSA and xclude Moorhead from F and West Fargo.

But Minot is close to the Bakken. People can live in Minot and work in the Bakken. I know people who live in Fargo and work in Grand Forks. We have roads. Minot is over 40,000 and Bismarck 60,000. Not too far off from 100,000 with the population boom in the west were little towns of around 1,000 or less is now doubling or tripling in people. Also my 100,000 example is just Fargo not a metro area....FARGO!!

Well I feel stupid for expecting a NDSU vs X Opponent thread to actually have any football information in it. Still just lakes sh*tting over everything and everyone else.

catbob. not me, its your dbag buddy darrel.

Football wise, NDSU should defintely win this game, they have momentum, a solid QB, solid defensive backfield and I do believe a better coach. Fans should also help NDSU in this game.

UNI great QB, great DLine. after that, its questionable.

I have only posted about the weather for the tailgaters, the channel the game will be on and the fact the population may shift towards the western part of the state due to the oil boom (a convo by me, Wyobisonman, bison07, and winindy), then you come on and tell me to stfu and blast your hatred. Unless that study that Wyobisonman posted doesn't come true. I just hope this oil boom stays for a long time. We need the population growth and its nice to get national news not relating to weather or floods.

That's just the city of Fargo. If you take into consideration the adjoining cities of West Fargo, Moorhead, Dilworth, & other rural cities, it easily reaches 200,000. In my mind that's pretty close to being a "metropolitan" city. It is called the F-M metro btw.
