Don't UD and UM have a common date they need to fill next year?

I don't see that happening. Montana would have to come here because there is no way the Hens will go that far for a regular season game. Besides, the Hens are already 1-0 in Missoula.

I'm not a marketing guy, but I just was thinking about what reducing the price of tix would do if anything. Seems like a tough proposition and the only way it works is if you absorb a big loss in the hopes that you could get more people hooked and then raise the prices back up.

I think I have this right that for every $1 you drop the price of a ticket, you need 1,000 more fans to buy that wouldn't have bought. Obviously $1 isn't going to do anything. $5 = 5,000 people... but does $5 do anything for you?

15,000 @ $20 = $300,000
20,000 @ $15 = $300,000

I don't see dropping prices as being a solution. The only place you want to do that IMO is keeping the family four packs cheap. I had no problem with the NEZ seating. I got many great photos of the action at my end and had a ton of fun with the other families, even ran into an old classmate who I went to K-UD together, but they allowed too many non-family folks in the NEZ. Need to keep that PG or PG-13 at worst.

Makes no sense for either team really. $$ to fly all the way across the country while the Hens can bring in US Merchant Marines and Montana can bring in Fort Lewis and make money.

Worked fine with App State. I guess we had two classic playoff games against them instead of one, but I think both fanbases could get excited about it. Hell, you guys might even have a sellout again. :kisswink:

UD is in I-AA. There are NO I-AA teams that would come to Newark that would pique anyone's interest. Let's move on from that one please.
I don't know how you get past the idea that you want to sell something that no one wants to see. That's my problem. You want to sell a product no one wants, that's a tough sales task. Just ask the Sixers.

That's a strange analogy. The Sixers are still in the NBA, correct? I assume you mean that the team itself sucks, not their opponents.

Attendance increased at UD from the 90's to the 2000's with the same opponents they've always had (didn't it, my memory is actually a bit troubling these days :? ).

I'm going on the notion that people actually want to see Delaware Blue Hen football. How is that a product that no one wants? Since you used the Sixers analogy, let me use the Capitals. I share season tix with some friends and my job every year is to split the tickets. I do it based on giving everyone a variety of days of the week (and look at occassional day games for buddies with smaller kids) and spread out over the course of the year. The last thing I look at is who they are playing. Maybe it's just me, but I don't give a rats ass who they are playing. A Flyers/Penguins/Rangers game can be fun because they are rivals, but I go to see the Caps (I actually stay away from Flyers games here because I'd rather root for the home team).

I think it would be exciting, but I don't see how it makes sense. I'd rather play Montana, EWU, NDSU... in December instead of September. It's hard enough getting through the conference without 3 losses (now 4 thanks to expanded playoffs).

The rise in attendance from the 90's to the '00's was partly based just on the fact that families tend to grow as they get older - kids get older, have their own kids, and now a group of 2 many years ago results in a group of 16. It's easy to increase attendance gradually when you hold onto core fans and their families get bigger naturally. People didn't care who UD was playing back then, it was just tradition to go to UD games and experience all the things you had experienced growing up through the decades. Hence why pissing those people off, the people who spent 20, 30, 40 years getting UD football into their blood, was and is a pretty big deal. Now you're starting over and while it was easier getting those fans in the '60's and '70's to turn into the fans who had larger families in the 90's and '00's, because there was just less competition for the entertainment dollar, now you need to sell UD football as an entertainment choice versus everything else they can spend their money on.

I'd need to see the attendance figures for the 70's forward. Seems like attendance was fine in the 70's and 80's and then started to decline in the 90's. If the main impetus for driving attendance was fan reproduction, we shouldn't have had a decline in the 90's at all.

I'm not naive enough to think that 2015 is the same as 1975 and I know there is a lot more competing for your entertainment dollar today than ever before. Cripes, the $250 I spend each month on cable/internet and $250 on smart phones tells me that. It's EASY to sit at home and watch a dozen games in the time I could go to one Blue Hen game. Easier, cheaper and can do it with a bunch of friends, or by myself. Most sports are seeing a decline in attendance, UD is not immune to that.

I know one thing UD could do to improve the fan experience. Open tailgate lots earlier. As I recall last Sept for JMU @ UD 6 PM game I think the lots opened 4? Hrs before the game at 2? PM. That is ridiculous. You definitely can't do that if you move up. At JMU the lots open at 8 AM regardless of when the game starts. Even a a 6 or 7 PM start time. UD could do similar.

That reminds me of Dover Downs line of thinking leading up to the race weeks when I worked there.

"We only sold 65k tickets and its a week before the race? Attendance dropping across the board? Nope! No discounts! Keep charging full price!!"

But I'll ask again, $5 = 5,000 people... but does $5 do anything for you? Do you think making tickets $5 cheaper will entice 5,000 more people to come? I can't believe there is anyone who is making a choice to come or not come over $5 per.

You could always play on Week 1 (EWU Calendar).

A football game between University of Delaware and Delaware State University sparked racist remarks on social media Saturday, prompting condemnation from the university community.

The anonymous remarks about DSU’s predominantly black student body were posted on the Yik Yak social media platform before the game in Newark was to start Saturday, although poor weather postponed it until Sunday.

UD’s Black Student Union this week brought the remarks to the attention of UD’s administration, BSU President Elliott Webster said.

UD President Patrick T. Harker condemned the racism in a Thursday letter to UD students, faculty and staff.

“It is troubling that this athletic contest between Delaware’s two public universities – a time of fun and celebration – was marred by rude and disrespectful language. It is even more distressing that we continue to be exposed to such hatred,” he said. “This kind of behavior has no place on our campus,” he said, urging all to join him in condemning “such hurtful actions that hide behind the mask of anonymity.”

The BSU appreciated the letter, Webster said, but Harker needs to speak more strongly and do more to fight racism at UD.

“There is still work to be done,” he said. “It’s time for an open conversation about race.”

The BSU posted screen grabs of some messages on Twitter under #DontStand4RacismUD. Two compared DSU students’ skin to the storm-filled skies and another likened DSU fans to gangs: “seriously don’t know if I’m looking at del state... or the bloods and crips.”...
