Following an extensive review process, Northeastern University has elected to discontinue its intercollegiate football program. The decision is consistent with the university’s strategic approach to prioritize programs and invest in signature strengths.
“Our goal for athletics is to achieve sustainable excellence in all areas,” said Athletic Director Peter Roby, who made the initial recommendation, which received the strong support of the university administration, the president, and the Board of Trustees. In an open letter to the Northeastern community, Roby continued, “We do not define success merely through wins and losses. Instead, we recognize that success comes from creating a positive student-athlete experience. The primary motivation for this decision was based on the significant obstacles to providing this experience for our football players.”
Roby added that Northeastern students will continue to participate in 18 different intercollegiate sports, more than 40 club sports, and hundreds of intramural teams. Recent successes include post-season play in basketball and hockey, and championships in women’s volleyball and soccer. The university opened this year’s basketball and hockey seasons in the newly renovated Matthews Arena to record crowds.

Rest in Peace Northeastern Football

. I hope it doesn't take 74 years for it to rise from the ashes again. Havin' a football team should NEVER be taken for granted, and I wish I see it again within' my lifetime...
On another sad note, I was really excited to visit Parson's Field when we finally began to play Northeastern, but now it won't happen. I had read so much about it's "aura." Oh well, maybe one day?

RIP Northeastern Football.
Will they have to drop a women's sport to stay in compliance?

This only strengthens the CAA, right?

interesting thought. I'm not sure Title IX has ever been used against a school for spending too much on women's athletics.
I would imagine they'll just shift funding from football to other men's sports (hockey and basketball probably).

I agree, but I doubt it does in practice.

It is sad to see a school drop football!

I remember when Boston University dropped football around 15 years ago! I wonder with NU dropping football and ODU and Ga State joining CAA football, if a new alignment will be made in the northern and southern divisions of CAA Football? Also, I believe my Spiders were scheduled to play Northeastern in 2010. Perhaps at UR's on campus facility?

Sad news. This reminds me of when BU dropped football; another sad day. I always enjoyed visiting Parsons Field. It was quite an unusual place to watch a game.
Looks like we'll go down in history as Northeastern's last win.
