The Montana Grizzlies and Appalachian State Mountaineers have met only once before, and it was on this very same stage.
Dec. 9, 2000. Anybody remember it? Sure you do. It was a classic game, maybe the best playoff game in the history of Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Montana won 19-16 when receiver and fan favorite Jimmy Farris (below) hauled in a touchdown strike from quarterback Drew Miller in overtime. The semfinal victory sent Montana on to the national title game in Chattanooga, Tenn.
After the game, Griz coach Joe Glenn summed it up perfectly:
"They were ready for us. But this team really stayed together. They just believed, and hung together, and did a great job of overcoming adverse situations."
I was on the sideline that day, and there are a few things I distinctly remember. One was the great play of App State quarterback Joe Burchette and receiver Troy Albea. But most memorable was the Grizzlies gutting it out in the end. It was a playoff game for the ages.
If Montana and App State provide an encore in their semifinal matchup this weekend, we're all in for a thirller.

Kind of like the Big Sky teams, outside of Montana of course. What Big Sky team, outside of Montana ofcourse, is worth a fucking damn?

Why so angry, your team makes the playoffs and goes deep every year? Relax already.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

Oh sure, the voice of reason over there in CAA land... where 4 teams make it every year and the only question is "shouldn't five CAA teams be in this year"
It's easy to be mr. cool under those circumstances... especially after Eastern Wa. & Weber exposed themselves and the Big Sky as suspiciously soft
Q: Name something that offends Republicans?
A: The actual teachings of Jesus

None. It's not smart to associate Montana with the rest of the BSC. Since Boise St., Nevada and Idaho graduated, it's a one-trick pony. Winning 11 straight conf. titles and losing one conf. game in four years are the first clues. Drawing 3X the conf. average is another. Being consistently nationally competiitive in spite of it, however, is the most significant.
