Known programs

Post by ∞∞∞ »

Sorry if this is a stupid topic, but who are the really well known names in FCS football? I just saw that thread about Georgia Southern and thought of the question. I know that Appy, Montana, Delaware, and GS are well-known names in the FCS, and I personally consider JMU another one (but maybe that's because I read and encounter a lot about them). Any other schools I should be aware of that are well-known in FCS with proud and historic programs?

Again, so far I've got:

Appy
Montana
Delaware
Georgia Southern
JMU (but that's just me...I don't know what the general consensus on that is).

Thanks!

I'd put UNI, YSU and SIU there.

Out of all the FCS schools its hard to argue that the Ivy's aren't the most well-known schools.

They may not fall into the category to FCS fans, but when for those outside the small FCS community that this is, the Ivy's are far and away the best known FCS schools.

The same can be said for some of the HBCU's. They have tremendous history.

I'd say in order of "football team general prominence", something like this:

Appalachian State
Montana
Georgia Southern
Delaware
Northern Iowa
Youngstown State
McNeese State
Furman
James Madison

I'd say Ivy football has pretty much dropped off the map, and the HBCU teams are really only prominent within their own world.

Youngstown definitely rings a bell. What about Fordham? Didn't Lombardi come from there? They also seem committed lately to their program. Are they committed because they want to build something new or something they once had?

I think it depends on what you mean by "well known."

If you mean by the average football fan, I think the only real names are Grambling, Southern (on NBC every year), App. State (three-time champ, Michigan win and the subsequent ESPN lovefest), Harvard and Yale ("The Game").

The other schools just aren't out there that much. If you include basketball, you could throw in 'Nova and Georgetown, but I would guess the average fan doesn't think Georgetown has a football team because they don't play in the Big East.

On a level below that (mildly recognizable), I would put Delaware (Flacco, Gannon, etc.), Montana (they win a lot and get some playoff expsoure), Georgia Southern (early decade dominance - see App. State) and maybe Northern Iowa.

Now if we are just talking about within the realm of FCS football fans, the above list is good.

Yeah I'm talkin' more about this. Like Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Ohio St., Penn St., etc. are to FBS...what is to FCS?

On boards like this one, the "list" that Silenoz posted above is a good one...

Towson State is known for Stacy Keibler, and that's pretty much it. Prairie View is known for their incredible losing skid. ODU for women's hoops. Youngstown and GA Southern are running on fumes from their '90s glory days. MS Valley is known for Jerry Rice. UNI for Kurt Warner. Delaware for the old Delaware Wing-T Offense (among old farts, anyway). Fordham is best known as the basis for naming the old Cleveland Rams (now in St. Louis). Harvard and Yale are perhaps the best known of the Ivies for football; one could add Princeton for hoops (took down UCLA in the NCAAs). BBQ U is best known for their beat-down of North Carolina.

That's pretty much the general public that wouldn't otherwise give FCS a second look. For those DO give a rip, well, they're probably fairly well-versed in their own conference, a nearby conference or two, and perhaps a couple of teams that have been in the Top 10 recently. There are probably very few who have an understanding of all conferences, much less all teams. I personally fall into that latter category. I'm all over Sac and generally follow the Sky as a whole for football. I pay attention when Great West teams (particularly Cow Poly) come to town. I like Liberty because I'm a current Liberty Distance Learning Program student, but otherwise wouldn't know a thing about East Coast football outside of maybe Appy since they're in the news quite a bit. I'm sure others are fairly similar. We're aided somewhat by this board, but to be a true expert on EVERYBODY takes too much time, and may well be impossible anyway.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Southern is semi-famous for their NBC-reinforced association with the immensely better known Grambling State.

Christ, we're an FCS forum and even WE don't talk about Grambling and Southern. :ohno: :coffee:

I have no idea what Southern is, other than the assumption that it's located somewhere in the South. I don't what the hell Grambling is...

Um...not me. Should I? I mean I just looked it up on wiki and they seem to be like any other university. What makes them special (serious question)? Sound like they have a good band though.

I don't know anything about Southern really. I've been learning more about them over the last year or two but not really much of anything. Grambling State I've heard of but don't know much about.

Question for you: Do you know who the winningest coach in Division I football is and where he coached?
