School began as the Norfolk Division of William & Mary in 1930 and played football immediately with the "Braves" nickname, accumulating a record of 62-19-4 in 11 years until football was discontinued. ODU even played Miami in 1932, losing 6-2 in what is regarded as the predecessor to the Orange Bowl. After a 69 year hiatus, ODU restarted football at the exact same venue where the the Braves played for 5 years, 74 year old Foreman Field.

UM was founded in 1893, same as MSU.

Originally, UM was known as "the State University of Montana" and MSU was the Agricultural College and then Montana State College.

South Dakota Grizzly was close................

MSU was originally founded in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana Land (a land grant college), later renamed Montana College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, became commonly known as Montana State College in the 1920's and became Montana State University in 1965.

The University of Northern Iowa was founded as a result of two influential forces of the nineteenth century. First, Iowa wanted to care for orphans of its Civil War veterans, and secondly, Iowa needed a public teacher training institution. In 1876, when Iowa no longer needed an orphan home, legislators Edward G. Miller and H.C. Hemenway started the Iowa State Normal School. [1]

The school’s first building opened in 1869 and was known as Central Hall. The building contained classrooms, common areas, and a living facility for most of the students. It was also a home to the college’s first principal, James Cleland Gilchrist. The building was the heart and soul of the school, allowing students to study courses of two-year, three-year, and four-year degrees. In 1965, a fire destroyed Central Hall, and school faculty and Cedar Falls citizens donated over $5000 to start building Gilchrist Hall. [1]

The school has been known under the following names:

Iowa State Normal School, 1896-1909
Iowa State Teachers College, 1934-1961
State College of Iowa, 1961-1967
University of Northern Iowa, 1967-present

EWU was established in 1882 by a $10,000 grant from expressman Benjamin Pierce Cheney, and was originally known as Benjamin P. Cheney Academy to honor its founder. In 1889 the school was renamed State Normal School and in 1937 to Eastern Washington College of Education. The campus grew quickly in size following World War II. The school became Eastern Washington State College. During this era, Eastern added various graduate and undergraduate degree programs. In 1977, the school's name was changed for the final time to Eastern Washington University by the Washington state legislature.
