How many sports does your school sponsor

Curious - how many sponsor the minimum to be DI, and how many sponsor at least the minimum to be FBS.

14=Minimum for DI
16=Minimum for FBS

I wouldn't be suprised if the 16 sport minimum was raised once the moratorium is lifted.

As of now, ODU sponsors 16. However, we'll have 18 when women's softball and volley are added to meet Title IX requirements.

Albany has 19 or 17 depending on whether you count indoor and outdoor track and field as separate teams.

I think you do, and I'm sure you count cross-country as separate than Track, but I'm not sure about indoor/outdoor.

Baseball
Softball
Golf (W only)
Basketball (M&W)
Lacrosse (M&W)
Football
Cross Country (M&W)
Indoor Track (M&W)
Outoor Track (M&W)
Soccer (M&W)
Tennis (W only)
Volleyball (W only)
Field Hockey (W only)

Or cutting a men's sport. There a couple easy cuts that can be made at SBU like men's swimming, tennis or track. Little pain.

We haven't had swimming for a long time. It got cut in the mid-90's along with our wrestling team. But yes we do have a really nice pool (recently refurbished). The community gets good use out of it.

We used to have 27 before Title IX forced us to cut a third of our program.

Montana has the minimum 14 sports, all in the Big Sky…

  • Men's & Women's Basketball
    Men's & Women's Cross Country
    Men's & Women's Tennis
    Men's & Women's Indoor Track
    Men's & Women's Outdoor Track
    (Men's) Football
    Women's Golf
    Women's Soccer
    Women's Volleyball
All teams are referred to as the "Grizzlies" or "Griz" except for women's basketball, which is referred to as "Lady Griz" (that moniker does not apply to other women's teams).

UM has one prominent club team—Men's Lacrosse—which competes in MCLA Division I. They play in the Division I version of the PNCLL, which also includes Washington, Washington St., Oregon, Oregon St., Idaho, Boise St., Gonzaga, Portland St., and Simon Fraser. They won the MCLA Division II (then called "Division B") national championship in 2007 and moved up to Division I the following year.

Central Connecticut sponsors 18 sports, all in the Northeast Conference. Begining in 2010-11 season and for the first time since joining the D-I ranks, all CCSU sports are under one conference and have automatic accesss to NCAA National Championships.

MEN (8): Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Indoor Track, Baseball, Golf, and Outdoor Track

WOMEN (10): Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, Swimming, Basketball, Indoor Track, Softball, Golf, Outdoor Track, and Lacrosse

Central also has a popular Men's Ice Hockey club team, but we don't have the $$$ (or Title IX room) to elevate it to varsity status. Since reclassifing as a D-I program in 1986, CCSU has dropped 3 men's teams - Wrestling, Swimming, and Tennis.

On the women's side, Soccer and Lacrosse are "recent" additions, and Tennis was the only women's team dropped. If there is a need or desire to add another women's team (for Title IX reasons) it will likely be Tennis, Bowling, or Field Hockey.

Field Hockey would be a good addition. When I was at Towson, most of the FH team played on the lax team. The two sports are very similar and its a good way to spread out the scholarships between two teams.

Actually having my girls in lacrosse now, you can feel the pressure to have them play field hocky in the fall. If my wife hadn't played soccer through college, I think we would have them in FH because of that pressure.
