Nothing official has been released yet to print but those who went to the meeting have verified that the debt service fee for our stadium and football center have been APPROVED! :thumb:

I'll post an official link once we have one

It's been a long struggle for us, but our day has finally come and it feels very good.

We can now pursue stadium/football center construction firms and the money is there. The entire UNC System budget still must pass the state house this Summer but they don't deal with fees directly so this is now a done deal. Click on the picture in my signature if you'd like to see the stadium renderings at 15,000 and 40,000 seats.

I'd also like to let all of you guys know how football at Charlotte came to be. It wasn't in back rooms or administrators' offices. Our AD didn't wake up one day and the notion popped into her head. No, none of these caused UNC Charlotte to explore adding football.

It was a message board.

A message board let us vent and moan about getting booted from CUSA and how not having football was the reason. A message board allowed the fans to meet and organize the Charlotte Football Initative. Without the grass roots campaign launched from a message board none of this would be happening today. Message boards often take a beating from sports personalities and media, but they can be used for good. A message board just like this one.

Yeah, the next step is to use some grassroots magic and get the name changed to the University of Charlotte. :thumb:

Preliminary organization efforts are already underway on that issue, however, it's going to be a much tougher issue to tackle because Chancellor Dubois LOVES the UNC on the front of our name. :ohno:

He knew he'd have to deal with football when he came back here so his only major issue with it was timing. Most of us think he wanted football to be at the end, not beginning of his tenure. But the name change issue has come at him from left field. As someone who, except for his time as President of U of Wyoming, has spent the majority of his time in the UNC system he can't understand why we don't all think being presumed to be a branch campus of Holy Mothership is not a good thing.

Bowles has said he'd support the U position on a name change (said the exact same about football, and he has) but now he's retiring and who knows what we'll get as System President.

We can skip the BoG on this if we simply rebrand ourselves University of Charlotte, similar to what VaTech does.

So is the plan for Charlotte to join the CAA or are they going to do something like UTSA is doing?

I think we'll work really hard to get an affiliate membership in the CAA with the rest of our A10 brethren. We have FBS aspirations but UTSA is following a model of move up I doubt we'll try. If we follow their example it will be because we're forced to by circumstances.

No hate here....but if you guys can perform in the first year anywhere NEAR what ODU did, you'll immediately become my #3 favorite team (after Griz & ODU).

I was joking myself and I would hope to have the same achievement level as ODU.

Congrats!

I'm just wondering is there any chance that the state of NC could be reaching Div I football saturation? How many more teams can the state of NC support? You already have:
1. UNC
2. NC State
3. ECU
4. Wake
5. Duke
6. App State
7. Elon
8. Western Carolina
9. NC A&T
10. Gardner-Webb (outside of Charlotte)
11. NC Central
12. Davidson (granted, non scholly Pioneer, so Div I in name ony)
13. Cambell (granted, non scholly Pioneer, so Div I in name ony)

The only state I can come up with that has more is TX with 15 (10 I-A and 5 I-AA), and they're nearlry 5x as big, with close to 3x the population, and are a lot more football crazy.

Well, if you can make it work, good luck with it.

*Edit: removed Winston Salem, added Cambell

Yup, there are ungodly amount of football teams in this state. Texas is the only state with more Division I football teams than NC. When taking all divisions into account I think there are four states with more: Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania and New York.

A total of 31 teams play in North Carolina. Soon to be 32.

I don't think the sheer number of teams in NC won't be a problem for Charlotte.

However, being in a market dominated by pro sports, NASCAR, the ACC, the SEC, etc will be a problem.

I wouldn't mind UNCC and App becoming rivals in football as we both know how to bring the hate. However, to see if they get to a level to be competitive won't be easy so UNCC supporters will have to be patient.
