By joining the FBS they are in breach of the SLC by-laws and will probably become Independant until the Sun Belt takes them. The SLC doesn't want a repeat of ULM being a partial member.

Thoughts

Well - they have to wait to join FBS until 2011, and hope the NCAA doesn't extend the ban on moves.

But from the SLC side, I agree - the BSC has similar by-laws. If Montana ever went FBS, they would have to find a whole new conference for all sports.

I would think that if they went I-A then they'd WANT to leave the SLC wouldn't they?

I think the thinking is that the SLC should give them the boot early since they are making their plans to move at this point. I would think the SLC should make this move at the point that there is a team to move in to their place whether they are ready to move out or not.

I think Texas St. was hoping they would get the ULM treatment where all other sports could stay in the SLC until they found a full time home in the Sun Belt.
