Rivalries

Was thinking about rivalries...the kind that make your blood boil...the kind that if you lose every other game in a season, but win that one game...you can live with it...
Some examples from various sports...
Red Sox- Yankees
Ohio State - Michigan
Black Hawks - Red Wings
Green Bay - Chicago Bears
That kind of rivalry....
Who is your ONE rival that rises to that level...
In football, for UMass, I'd say it's UNH...if we lose to the granite heads from Durham....it's not good...
URI is close second...but, we have to beat UNH!!!!!!!!!

For Western Carolina, it's ASU in the annual Battle for the Old Mountain Jug , unfortunately, right now, the record is somewhat lopsided in favor of ASU, we last won the jug in 2004.

I wouldn't say there's any team that does that for me. For me, as a Montana fan, it's all about the overall success of the season. No one rival is that important, not even the Bobcats.
However, if there is one key game for the Griz I would point to as being the most important, it's the first round of the playoffs. Historically, Montana has been an all or nothing playoff team. In 18 appearances, the Griz have made the title game 5 times, lost in the first round 9 times, and lost in-between just 4 times. UM has lost in the first round in 50% of their playoff appearances, but, if they win in the first round, they get to the championship game 56% of the time. Thanksgiving weekend is usually the key time of any modern Griz season.

Rivalry, definitely the Kitties! You won't find a more passionate game anywhere, at any level. The is hatred among some fans and others can't bring themselves to root for the other team at any time. I know bobcat fans that were rooting for JMU in the NC game in 2004.

As far as NDSU goes....Most will say UND
I prefer SDSU, the rivalry with them these last 5 years during transition has heated up considerably. The competition on the field is top notch, the smack is great between the two schools without all the childish back-biting you get with NDSU-UND.
My vote SDSU every time. "I hates you...Rabbits"

i would agree with appaholic and say i love to hate ga southern.
western fans would say appalachian but i believe that series is 52-18-1 or something in favor of app. kind of one sided. i really think that rivalry has less to do with football rather than a hatred of fans. i despise western fans because one, they know absolutely nothing about football, and two, they actually think they are on the same level as asu and the rest of the upper tier socon teams.

Another great rivalry would have to be Grambling-Southern.

For SIU in recent years, it has been UNI for football.
In basketball, it is Creighton.
If Creighton had football..............

When Boise State isn't busy getting bikini waxed in preparation for their next SEC/ACC boinking, they still call their old boyfriends on occasion. Portland State's always good for a rough tumble and gives a good spanking.
PSU v Boise...nothing beats a good gloat the morning after.
Course, then again, this year, with the teddy bears coming down...

The Bison/Rabbits match-ups are much better now in FCS than in the D-II days. Having endured about 15 years of no Jacks wins vs these Bovines, it's good to be back on even footing, and a top battle royale in each venue. With that said, it's a "two brothers wrestling match" Detest them when playing, but otherwise, am usually cheering them on more than any other program.
Now for a "Any body but ____" rivalry, nothing better than thumped Coyotes. It'll be awhile before we see them again, but they were a team that if that was the ONLY win of the season, it was still a good season.
